Kalumet

16 Sep 2015

Kalumet a complete environment manager and deployer including J2EE
environments (application servers, applications, etc), softwares, and
resources.

Kalumet has been incubating since 2011-09-20.

Unfortunately, due to low activity and lack of time, the Kalumet community
didn't success to move forward on the releases and implementation of the
expected feature.

We are thinking about retiring Kalumet from the incubator. A formal vote has
been sent on the mailing list.

 John D. Ament (johndament):

Activity has been extremely low on the podling, pinged them to see how
they were doing, received a quick response. It's always sad to see a
podling choose to retire, but it's a valid resolution in this case.

Shepherd/Mentor notes:

 Justin Mclean:

Did not report this month. Last report (March) project was considering
retiring. There has been no real activity on mailing list and given lack
of progress on releases I think we should ask the PMC to consider
   retiring the project.

Kalumet has been incubating since 2011-09-20.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

Due to the low activity level, Kalumet community is thinking about
 retiring Kalumet from the incubator.

Community Developement:

Apache Kalumet 0.6-incubating version has been released. However, due to
some misunderstanding, the release vote has not been completed by 3 IPMC.
Especially, some legal files issues have been raised.

We are preparing a 0.6.1-incubating release to fix the legal files and
 submit to IPMC vote.

We are in the way of promoting the documentation on the website.

Project Development:

We are preparing the 0.6.1-incubating (plan for December, 27) to fix the
legal files issues raised on 0.6-incubating release and have a complete
 IPMC vote.

We are preparing the 0.7-incubating release with the development changes.

A new contributor has been identified and started to work on some issues
and refactoring of the webconsole (mockup provided using Vaadin).

Local branches have been created containing:

 - new model and REST API
 - new webconsole (remove of Echo framework)

These local branches will be merged on the 0.7-incubating branch (master).

 Before Graduation:

 - The documentation has been updated and aligned with the 0.6-incubating
release. The documentation will be promoted on the website and "linked"
in announcement e-mails as soon as the 0.6.1-incubating release has been
   voted.
 - The 0.7-incubating release will fix the graduation issue, especially in
term of license (removal of Echo2 framework for the UI).

 Post Graduation:

 - Kalumet scripts. It's the extension of the "software" concept globally
to all Kalumet resources. It will allow users to create custom
deployment/update plan, with a set of fine-grained steps.

Last report talked about graduation so perhaps they just need some help

environments (application servers, applications, etc), softwares, and
resources.

Kalumet has been incubating since 2011-09-20.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Prepare Kalumet 0.7.0-incubating release
 2. Publish the documentation of the website
 3. Refactore some modules

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be

 No

How has the community developed since the last report?

Unfortunately, we didn't have a lot of activity during the last two
 months.

We count on the first release to gather more people on the project
 (contributors and users).

How has the project developed since the last report?

We released Apache Kalumet 0.6-incubating release on November, 22, 2013.

We are preparing the publication of the release, publication of the
documentation on the website, and announcement e-mails.

 John Ament (johndament):

Kalumet seems to be OK, but a little bit slow. They have been
incubating for a little over 2 years now, I think if they can get
together on another release shortly they should consider graduating,
there was some confusion for a little while over IPMC vs PPMC votes
which caused a delay in getting their 0.6 release out the door.

How has the community developed since the last report?

We did a couple of informal presentations during events (JUG, JAX, etc). We
got good feedbacks, but the message is that users are waiting for a first
 release to move forward.

How has the project developed since the last report?

 1. Release 0.6.0-incubator (fixes on the legal files)
 2. Complete the documentation
 3. Refactore the console

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of?

How has the community developed since the last report? We submitted Kalumet
0.6.0-incubating release to vote, not approved by an IPMC as it requires some
fixes on legal files (NOTICE especially).

We submitted a talk to ApacheCon NA, but the talk has not been selected.
This talk presents Kalumet, with the current features and the roadmap. It has
been given to different "local" events in Europe.

How has the project developed since the last report? We created the Jira
corresponding to the changes that we want to include in Kalumet releases.

We decided to increase the release cycle in order to give more visibility to
the users, as soon as 0.6.0-incubating will be out.

We completed a first documentation. The documentation will be part of the
0.6.0-incubating release and is also available directly on the website.

Date of last release:
- 0.6.0-incubating submitted 2 times (September, 2012 and November, 2012),
 but not cancelled.
- This release is in preparation with the legal fixes

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be

How has the community developed since the last report?
We submitted a couple of Kalumet 0.6.0-incubating releases to vote.

Unfortunately, due to "discussion" around legal files (especially
 NOTICE), the votes didn't pass.

We are fixing the legal issue and will submit a new 0.6.0-incubating
 release to vote.

Shepherd notes:

I am a concerned about the recent drop in activity for the podling.
There was a flurry of mail around the 0.6.0-incubating release and very
little of substance since then, with absolutely nothing in the month
of February.  I wouldn't be so concerned if the vote was successful;
but, since it was a cancelled vote, I would have assumed the community
would try to fix the issues and get it out as soon as possible.
These observations are, of course, made from a quick review, so I could
be missing an important detail.

Lot of users are still "linked" to the old area on sourceforge.
We are going to deprecate the sourceforge area to highly promote Kalumet.

Our effort will be on the project activity.

Project Development:

From a codebase perspective, we added the support of JBoss 6/7 and made some
important enhancements on the VFS file manipulation.

Now, we are working on the documentation, to be able to publish on the website
asap.

Roadmap Before Graduation:

 - The first target is the documentation. We plan to provide an online
