Description:

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that
provides storage, management, and query capabilities for large collections
of semi-structured data.

Activity:

- Development and discussions are active, the community is healthy and
 engaged.
- More interest around SQL++ as a query language for semi-structured data.
AsterixDB has been used to teach SQL++ at the University of Washington and
 at UC Irvine.
- Working on easing and encouraging adoption of AsterixDB by addressing
usability/documentation/stability feedback from students and developers of
AsterixDB based projects (Cloudberry, BAD, Couchbase).
- Efforts to increase the release cadence show first successes. The first
non-incubating release is out and the second one is under review.

Issues:

- There are no issues that require the board's attention at this time.

Description:

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that
provides storage, management, and query capabilities for large collections
of semi-structured data.

Activity:

- Development and discussions are active, the community is healthy and
 engaged.
- The activity to make AsterixDB more extensible is ongoing. The BAD (Big
Active Data) extension of AsterixDB is now maintained in a separate
repository and relies on available extension points.
- Couchbase is working on another extension that supports a tighter
 integration with Couchbase server.
- SQL++ has been added as a second query language for semi-structured data.
There is hope that its more familiar syntax can help to increase interest
 in AsterixDB.
- A lot of activity around the first non-incubating release. Most release
activities are around generating LICENSE and NOTICE files based on
manually curated and version controlled metadata. RC1 is currently under
 review on the dev list.

Issues:

- There are no issues that require the board's attention at this time.

PMC/Committership changes:

Wenhai Li was added as a committer on 2016-10-05.
The last committer added was Wenhai Li on 2016-10-05.

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that
provides storage, management, and query capabilities for large
collections of semi-structured data.

AsterixDB has been incubating since 2015-02-28.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Do an Apache release that can also provide binary artifacts with
    correct LICENSEs and NOTICEs.
 2.
 3.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

 No.

How has the community developed since the last report?

 - Heri Ramampiaro was added as a committer on Jan 16.

How has the project developed since the last report?

 - Continued active development.
 - Current focus on stabilizing the code base.
 - The most important issue to be addressed is still the same as for
the last report, but significant progress has been made (by Ian with
a lot of support from Ate) and RC2 for the binary release is
   currently under review.

Date of last release:

 2015-10-22 AsterixDB 0.8.7
 2015-09-22 Hyracks 0.2.16

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

 2.
 3.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

The discussion on the use of an external Gerrit instance for code
reviews is considered to be resolved.
 The current workflow ensures that
 a) The ASF git repository is the canonical repository for the project.
 b) Only committers can manually commit changes to the ASF git
    repository.
 c) All discussions on the Gerrit instance are sent to
    notifications@asterixdb.incubator.apache.org.
While it would be good to also have the Gerrit instance run on ASF
hardware, this is neither necessary to document the provenance of the
code nor to enable list members to follow and participate in the
activities of the project. Also, there seems to be no infra capacity
 to provide a Gerrit service.

How has the community developed since the last report?

 - A paper on AsterixDB was presented at VLDB'15.
 - A deep-dive introduction to AsterixDB was given at the first
workshop on Big Data Open Source Systems (BOSS'15).
 - Chris Hillery was added as a committer on Oct 20.
 - Increased traffic on the users list.

How has the project developed since the last report?

 - All Google Code issues were migrated to the ASF JIRA and triaged.
 - The discussion on the use of an external Gerrit instance for code
reviews is considered to be resolved.
 - AsterixDB 0.8.7 and the associated Hyracks 0.2.16 were released.

 Chris Mattmann (mattmann):

 Ted Dunning (tdunning):

The handling of the Gerrit question was particularly good.

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that provides
storage, management, and query capabilities for large collections of
semi-structured data.

AsterixDB has been incubating since 2015-02-28.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Migrate issues from Google Code
 2. Do an Apache release.
 3. Grow community

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware
of?

 1. The most urgent issue right now is to migrate the issues from the
Google Code tracker to the ASF JIRA (INFRA-9954) as Google Code turns
read-only on Aug 24. The issue was open with sporadic activity for
some time. Recently, the frequency of the interactions with infra has
increased significantly (thanks!), but the problem is not solved yet.
 2. There was a discussion on the use of a Gerrit instance hosted at UCI
for code reviews in this project. After an initial assumption that this
was contrary to Apache policy and the subsequent
    a) clarification on how Gerrit is being used (every AsterixDB commit is
explicitly made by a committer to the ASF git repo - not by Gerrit),
    b) configuration of Gerrit that all notifications are sent the the
       project's mailing list, and
    c) addition of a step at Gerrit account creation that requires that an
ICLA is on file at the ASF
the current state of the discussion is that this is
    a) not contrary to policy but also
    b) not ideal as the regular workflow depends on non-ASF resources.
Ideally the code review tool would be hosted by infra, but capacity is
    an issue.

How has the community developed since the last report?

Getting more requests on opportunities to contribute and also some
 contributions.
