Formal board meeting minutes from 2010 through present. Please Note: The board typically approves minutes from one meeting during the next board meeting, so minutes will be published roughly one month later than the scheduled date. Other corporate records are published, as is an alternate categorized view of all board meeting minutes.

AsterixDB

18 Jan 2017 [Till Westmann / Mark]

Description:

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that
provides storage, management, and query capabilities for large collections
of semi-structured data.

Activity:

- Development and discussions are active, the community is healthy and
 engaged.
- The activity to make AsterixDB more extensible is ongoing. The BAD (Big
Active Data) extension of AsterixDB is now maintained in a separate
repository and relies on available extension points.
- Couchbase is working on another extension that supports a tighter
 integration with Couchbase server.
- SQL++ has been added as a second query language for semi-structured data.
There is hope that its more familiar syntax can help to increase interest
 in AsterixDB.
- A lot of activity around the first non-incubating release. Most release
activities are around generating LICENSE and NOTICE files based on
manually curated and version controlled metadata. RC1 is currently under
 review on the dev list.

Issues:

- There are no issues that require the board's attention at this time.

PMC/Committership changes:

Wenhai Li was added as a committer on 2016-10-05.
The last committer added was Wenhai Li on 2016-10-05.
The last PPMC/PMC member added was Michael Blow on 2016-03-28.
Jochen Wiedmann resigned from the PMC on 2016-10-26.

Releases:

AsterixDB graduated from the Incubator on April 20, 2016. The last releases
were on February 26, 2016: AsterixDB 0.8.8-incubating and Hyracks
0.2.17-incubating.

Activity:

- Development and discussions are active, the community is healthy and
 engaged.
- Some activity to make AsterixDB more extensible to enable projects to
extend AsterixDB in different directions while maintaining a stable common
 core.
- The first non-incubating release of AsterixDB is getting more urgent.
- Twitter handle has been changed to @AsterixDB, name to "Apache AsterixDB".

Issues:

- There are no issues that require the board's attention at this time.

Description:

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that
provides storage, management, and query capabilities for large collections
of semi-structured data.

Activity:

- The general state of the project (and the report) are largely unchanged
from last month. Development and discussions are active, the community is
 healthy and engaged.
- The move of infra resources is done - some incubator cleanup is still
 outstanding.
- First mention of Hyracks now is "Apache Hyracks" and information about
Hyracks is now easier to reach by following the link to the ASTERIX
publications at UC Irvine (which contain the ICDE 2011 paper on Hyracks).
- Kaveen Rodrigo's GSoC project has passed the mid-term evaluation and is
 progressing further.

Issues:

- There are no issues that require the board's attention at this time.

of semi-structured data.

Activity:

- The general state of the project - and the report - are largely unchanged
from last month. Development and discussions are active, the community is
healthy and engaged. The move of infra sources has been started (the
mailing lists were moved), but the migration ticket in JIRA is still
 "waiting for infra".
- Kaveen Rodrigo has started working with the AsterixDB community on a GSoC
 project.

Issues:

- TLP migration JIRA tasks not started yet:

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that provides
storage, management, and query capabilities for large collections of
semi-structured data.

Activity:

- Graduation activities started in the project, but no infra resources have
 been moved yet.
- Continued active development (~1 commit/~3 mails to dev list per day).
- Current focus on stabilizing the code base to get the first non-incubating
 release out.

Issues:

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that
provides storage, management, and query capabilities for large
collections of semi-structured data.

AsterixDB has been incubating since 2015-02-28.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Do an Apache release that can also provide binary artifacts with
    correct LICENSEs and NOTICEs.
 2.
 3.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

 No.

How has the community developed since the last report?

 - Heri Ramampiaro was added as a committer on Jan 16.

How has the project developed since the last report?

 - Continued active development.
 - Current focus on stabilizing the code base.
 - The most important issue to be addressed is still the same as for
the last report, but significant progress has been made (by Ian with
a lot of support from Ate) and RC2 for the binary release is
   currently under review.

Date of last release:

 2015-10-22 AsterixDB 0.8.7
 2015-09-22 Hyracks 0.2.16

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

The discussion on the use of an external Gerrit instance for code
reviews is considered to be resolved.
 The current workflow ensures that
 a) The ASF git repository is the canonical repository for the project.
 b) Only committers can manually commit changes to the ASF git
    repository.
 c) All discussions on the Gerrit instance are sent to
    notifications@asterixdb.incubator.apache.org.
While it would be good to also have the Gerrit instance run on ASF
hardware, this is neither necessary to document the provenance of the
code nor to enable list members to follow and participate in the
activities of the project. Also, there seems to be no infra capacity
 to provide a Gerrit service.

How has the community developed since the last report?

 - A paper on AsterixDB was presented at VLDB'15.
 - A deep-dive introduction to AsterixDB was given at the first
workshop on Big Data Open Source Systems (BOSS'15).
 - Chris Hillery was added as a committer on Oct 20.
 - Increased traffic on the users list.

How has the project developed since the last report?

 - All Google Code issues were migrated to the ASF JIRA and triaged.
 - The discussion on the use of an external Gerrit instance for code
reviews is considered to be resolved.
 - AsterixDB 0.8.7 and the associated Hyracks 0.2.16 were released.
