## Project Activity:
Attic retired 1 project: Clerezza, and helped reinstate Ambari, which was
moved to the Attic previous quarter.

## Community Health:
Reviving Ambari project has driven much more community interest and discussion
than usual moves to the Attic: this lead us to introduce a Git mirror to our
Subversion source for website to ease patches submission, hoping that it will
help contributions in the future.

One new idea was raised that needs more visibility: Attic red-banner on
retired projects' website gives great community visibility after a move to the
Attic but it's too late. It would be useful to provide such banner *before*
the move, when project is looking for more community involvement to avoid
going to the Attic. We still need to detail how this service would be proposed
to TLP projects: if any project is interested, please ping us.

## Description:
The mission of Attic is the creation and maintenance of a home for dormant
projects.

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention at this time: we're back on track.

## Membership Data:

- No new committers. Last addition was Herve Boutemy on 2016-01-27.

## Project Activity:
There was no new retirement for 2021 Q1.

We worked on finishing the retirement process for projects moved to the Attic
in 2019 and 2020, a big backlog from 2 years. When checking done vs todo in
detail for every project, most of the user-visible steps had been done on time
immediately when retirement started (ie adding the "retired" banner to the
site, updating committee-info.txt, foundation site, ...): the only missing
step was to officially announce retirement on announce mailing-list. Then we
did a batch of announces to close the whole backlog.

There is a technical discussion happening with infra on how to manage Git
repositories of projects moved to the Attic on GitHub and GitBox:
- rename to attic-*.git (to mark Attic-PMC management)
- or keep as-is (to let community find resources at the usual place)?
More than a pure technical discussion, it's about user experience from
communities of a retired project.

Some work just started on writing or linking to an article on "How to keep
your project and community healthy"/"How to avoid moving to the Attic".

## Community Health:
Retirement work is mostly done by 1 PMC member (who wrote a maximum
automation), and announces are done by PMC Chair. Other PMC members are active
in the discussions.

On next retirements, we'll need to check that retirement process (as
documented and automated) can be understood and run by multiple PMC members,
to ensure our current good situation is sustainable over time and people.

 successor to the post;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Mads Toftum is relieved and
discharged from the duties and responsibilities of the office of Vice
 President, Apache Attic, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Herve Boutemy be and hereby is appointed
to the office of Vice President, Apache Attic, to serve in accordance

or disqualification, or until a successor is appointed.

Special Order 7B, Change the Apache Attic Project Chair, was
approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.

17 Feb 2021 [Mads Toftum / Sam]

## Description:
PMC Attic is responsible for the oversight of projects which otherwise would
not have oversight.

## Issues:
Current PMC Chair did not find time to work on Attic and does not expect to be
able to clear up sufficient time to make progress in the next quarter.
We'll change PMC Chair during the next month.

## Membership Data:
Apache Attic was founded 2008-11-19 (12 years ago)
There are currently 21 committers and 18 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is 7:6.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Herve Boutemy on 2015-07-19.
- No new committers. Last addition was Herve Boutemy on 2016-01-27.

## Project Activity:
There are currently 20 projects being moved to the Attic: 5 added during 2020
Q4, 0 finished during this period http://attic.apache.org/tracking.html

## Community Health:
We have a backlog that represents 1 year of projects added, some work done to
do the move (with many automated tasks thanks to Sebb), but never until the
last step is done and move marked fully done.

There is no precise blocker, it's just about finishing the job.

We'll work on finishing some Attic moves, so we see progress over next months.

## Description:
The mission of Attic is to be Apache's home for dormant projects.

## Issues:
Activity has been very low recently which has led to a backlog. With 5 projects
retired so far in 2020 (more than all year in both 2018 and 2019), it will take
some time to work catch up.

## Description:
PMC Attic is responsible for the oversight of projects which otherwise would
not have oversight.

## Issues:
FYI ; After the transfer of XMLbeans from Attic to Poi, board asked Attic to
document the "un-Attic" policy. On a attic.a.o, under "Process of leaving the
Attic again", we have added this :

+ * [option 4] Transfering to an existing PMC
+ A receiving PMC must be willing to assume all responsibilities that come
+ with running a project : maintain code, answer questions, fix bugs,
+ publish releases etc.
+ If the Board does not object, PMC Attic will transfer the project's assets
+ (code-base, TLP website, maven group-id etc) to the receiving PMC.
+ After the transfer the receiving PMC will report to the Board about the
+ project's activities, and publish project releases in the PMC's dist area.

One point remains ; Attic would like the board's advice on the following. The
Board of Directors Meeting Minutes July 17, 2013, section 7.E says :
... RESOLVED, that the Attic PMC be and hereby is tasked with oversight over
the software developed by the Apache XMLBeans Project; and be it further
 ...

As far as Attic knows, Attic is still formally tasked with this oversight.
This is not correct, because the XMLBeans software is now under the care of
PMC Poi. Attic wants to know how this inaccuracy can be formally remedied.

## Activity:
Attic retired project Lucy.

18 Jul 2018 [Henk P. Penning / Roman]

## Description:
PMC Attic is responsible for the oversight of projects
which otherwise would not have oversight.

## Issues:
No public issues

## Activity:
In may 2018, PMC Poi showed an interest in reviving the code
of (atticked) project XMLBeans. This triggered a long, confused,
complicated discussion involving PMC's Attic and Poi, and
(finally) Board. The whole thing started with the (premature,
unauthorised) unfreezing of the (canonical) XMLBeans code
base by infra, on PMC Poi's request.

Sofar, no project has ever moved from the Attic to an existing,
established PMC, so there was no cookbook.
For guidance, Attic is inclined to take a formal approach :
to look at ASF bylaws and offical policies.
Note that atticking a project involves a lot of dumb handwork,
which Attic wants to avoid and automate ; hence the formal approach.

The Attic-internal discussion was confusing because in speech
and (formal) documents, terms like PMC, Project, sub-project
and TLP are almost used interchangably.

In discussions with Poi, Board and infra, Attic's formal approach
was generally met with a "get out of the way", "JFDI" attitude.
Quick and dirty, ad-hoc solutions are ok ;
introducing exceptions isn't a "problem".

In the end, 4 items were identified where "re-use Xmlbeans" or
"create in Poi" [go POI] was possible:
https://mail-search.apache.org/members/private-arch/attic-private/201806.mbox/%3C1901870.K1nLqlVQl1%40giga%3E
-- source code: unfreeze of fork
-- dist area : /dist/xmlbeans/ or /dist/poi/xmlbeans/
-- groupId : org.apache.xmlbeans or org.apache.poi
-- web site : xmlbeans.a.o or poi.a.o/xmlbeans/
Directors' responses varied from JFDI, to "let POI decide", to "go POI".
By then, there was frustration and irritation, so the discussion was
actively stopped ; Attic just unatticked XMLbeans.

At the moment :
-- Poi uses the original xmlbeans code base [re-use]
-- Poi publishes releases in /dist/poi/xmlbeans/ [go POI]
-- Poi uses the xmlbeans groupId [re-use]
-- Poi maintains xmlbeans.a.o [re-use]

For the future :
-- Attic will use this result as a new option for "Process of
 leaving the Attic again".
-- A PMC that wants to take over an atticked project
must ask the board's approval first.

Special Order 7B, Change the Apache Attic Project Chair, was
approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.

19 Apr 2017 [Henri Yandell / Shane]

The Attic is where projects slumber when their communities fade away.

Stratos and Abdera moved to the Attic in the last quarter.

Concurrent with this report, I am resigning as VP for the Attic. Jan
Iversen has volunteered to take over, and the Attic PMC has voted
to encourage the board to accept Jan's offer.

The Attic is where projects slumber when their communities fade away.

DeviceMap moved to the Attic last quarter, and Etch's move to the Attic
was completed.

Nothing much else to report - low activity, but there's little in the
way of priority items that need to be done.

Etch is still in the process of moving to the Attic.

Repeating from last report; activity is low. The Attic could use some energy
towards generating advice on how to keep out of the Attic, some more energy
on the mundane clean up work, and energy on encouraging energy.

That said, bar Etch there's not much short term to do.

 - One project move to the Attic was completed (Shindig). Deltacloud remains
mostly done with Git aspects needing completing. Ryan Baxter's help
moving Shindig to the Attic was very much appreciated.

## Health report:

## Issues:
 - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:
 - Three project moves to the Attic were completed (Whirr, DirectMemory
and Click), and Deltacloud is mostly done (first Git based project
to enter the Attic). Sebb has done sterling work rescuing the lost
Jakarta websites from the Internet Archive.

## Health report:
 - We're reacting well to projects moving to the Attic, and it's good to
see Hervé and Sebb's activity. There's always a project with just a
little to complete (Deltacloud this time), so we could do that little bit
   better.

15 Jul 2015 [Henri Yandell / Sam]

## Description:
 - The Attic is where projects slumber when their communities fade away.

## Activity:

Activity has been low. While little new has been added this quarter
(Lenya retirement), there are still items on the task list from Q1 or
earlier.

 - Lenya is now in the process of being moved into the Attic.
 - Whirr is still in the process of being moved into the Attic.
 - Five retired Jakarta websites need regenerating.
 - Retirement of 3 Web Services projects needs closing out.

## Issues:
 - Lack of activity is the primary issue. A request was made to members@
for assistance with Lenya which resulted positively, but hasn't happened
for Lenya yet. Hervé has asked for access to fix up Attic project DOAP
files (the PMC has voted to invite him to join).
 - A secondary issue is whether the Attic needs to setup anything to avoid
similar situations to the loss of the Jakarta websites (both in terms of
noticing the loss and making replacement simple).

## Description:
 - The Attic is where projects slumber when their communities fade away.

## Activity:
 - Whirr is being added to the Attic, per the previous board meeting.
 - Sebb identified that various old Jakarta websites went offline and
Infra are looking into this: INFRA-9251
 - It was reported that the Excalibur API docs have also gotten lost.

21 Jan 2015 [Henri Yandell / Jim]

No activity in the last quarter, within the Attic or for the Attic.

One issue is open in Jira that needs closing out (retired note needs
adding to some WS projects).

15 Oct 2014 [Henri Yandell / Ross]

A quiet quarter - one ticket on helping the WS/Axis TLP retire three of
their subprojects is all the activity that has been required of the Attic.

Henk Penning joined the Attic PMC in July 2014.

16 Jul 2014 [Henri Yandell / Ross]

Since our last report (two months ago) our process for moving projects
into the Attic has been streamlined and ESME, XMLBeans, stdcxx, and
Click have all finished the process of moving into the Attic.

Currently there are no pending tasks for the Attic community to work on.

Henk Penning has joined the Attic PMC.

and the Bylaws of the Foundation until death, resignation, retirement,
removal or disqualification, or until a successor is appointed.

Special Order 7E, Change the Apache Attic Project Chair, was
approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.

21 May 2014 [Gianugo Rabellino / Jim]

There has been an increase in activity at the Attic with WS-MUSE being
retired, and ESME, XMLBeans and stdcxx all being partially moved to the
Attic. Retiring the XML project has been identified as still having items
to complete.

The process of moving projects to the Attic has been simplified by
splitting into two stages - retiring the project publicly, and freeing up
infrastructure resources. My hope is that this will decouple the essential
parts of moving to the Attic from the clean up.

In moving XMLBeans to the Attic, we've noticed that one commit has
occurred after the board removed the PMC in July. This commit does not
appear to be of concern[1] and SVN has now been made read only for XMLBeans.

The project has put a resolution in front of the board to change the chair.

16 Apr 2014 [Gianugo Rabellino / Roy]

No report was submitted.

AI: Ross: what can be done to improve the Attic situation?

15 Jan 2014 [Gianugo Rabellino / Sam]

Apologies for a late (well, missing) report. We will of course volunteer
a new one next month. FYI, though, there have been no changes and no
activity on the Attic since the last report, other than a ping from
Chris. Silver lining: Henri seems to have some bandwidth again. :)

20 Nov 2013 [Gianugo Rabellino / Shane]

The Attic is currently experiencing a lack of volunteer time. We have two
projects in the pipeline (stdcxx and ESME) who’s archival process looks
stuck – and actually even never started for stdcxx. I guess it’s time
for the Attic PMC to do an open enrollment and see if we can secure more
helping hands.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I think the board should actively be aware
of the following tidbits, which don’t apply directly to the Attic but may
well have impact one way or another:

1. Two projects (XMLBeans and DDLUtils) have theoretically moved to the
Attic. However, both archival processes have been stopped as the community
decided to try and revive them. Work hasn't been started on the Attic side,
waiting to see what happens. XML beans is currently beginning an incubation
process.

2. Axis is expected to start moving inactive projects to the Attic. No
concrete follow-up yet as of today and we hope that when they do, they
come with volunteers ready to help out.

3. A long thread on dev@click.a.o and board@ happened in September,
moving quickly from retirement of Click into a general discussion on creating
a new category of "finished" projects with no real community but still not
attic-worthy. I assume there is no action for the Attic at this point in
time, but the thread may well be revived in the near future.

AI Chris: When was the last PMC member added?

16 Oct 2013 [Gianugo Rabellino / Greg]

No report was submitted.

AI: Greg follow up with Gianugo

17 Jul 2013 [Gianugo Rabellino / Doug]

No issues requiring board attention at this time. Quiet time in the
mailing lists, however since the last report Apache ESME and Apache
DDLUtils are in the process of moving to the Attic.

17 Apr 2013 [Gianugo Rabellino / Bertrand]

No issues requiring board attention. No activity in the past two months
in the Attic project, although mailing lists have been responsive.
Looking forward to more projects seeking Attic support.

20 Feb 2013 [Gianugo Rabellino / Bertrand]

Apologies for missing the report last month. At this point there are
no issues requiring board attention in the Attic project. Things are
quiet, the pipeline is empty but the low to nonexistent mailing lists
traffic is being monitored. Other than one small ongoing task on
closing the XML project, we are waiting for things to do!

16 Jan 2013 [Gianugo Rabellino / Brett]

No report was submitted.

17 Oct 2012 [Gianugo Rabellino / Greg]

No issues requiring board attention since the last report. Harmony has
now fully migrated to the Attic, XIndice is on its way. We still need
to start working on bringing the XML project as a whole to the Attic.

25 Jul 2012 [Gianugo Rabellino / Sam]

(Attic)

20 Jun 2012 [Gianugo Rabellino / Jim]

Apologies for missing the report for two months in a row.
As the late reports indicate, the Attic is currently operating
at a reduced pace and could really use more people helping out.
It's not like there is lots of work to do, but it seems volunteers
are just not there (nor we are seeing projects heading our way).
The latest two Attic additions (XIndice and Harmony) are still
open in Jira, though the bulk of work has been done and from a
public perspective the projects are archived. I hope I will have
some cycles in the upcoming weeks to tidy things up, but the
community issue still stands and we could use some help.

Harmony JIRA was recently marked read-only as part of some general JIRA cleanup.

16 May 2012 [Gianugo Rabellino / Jim]

No report was submitted.

18 Apr 2012 [Gianugo Rabellino / Sam]

No report was submitted.

24 Jan 2012 [Gianugo Rabellino / Brett]

No issues requiring board attention at this time. Since the
past board report, Harmony moved to the attic and process is
ongoing.

26 Oct 2011 [Gianugo Rabellino / Shane]

Since the last board report retirement of Cactus and Regexp has
completed. XIndice moved to the Attic, work is ongoing to shelve the
project. No issues requiring board attention at this time.

20 Jul 2011 [Gianugo Rabellino / Greg]

We completed the move of OJB to the Attic and Regexp is nearly there
as well. No other projects in the pipeline at this time and no issues
requiring board attention.

20 Apr 2011 [Gianugo Rabellino / Bertrand]

Short 'n sweet: no issues requiring board attention at this time.
Excalibur was moved to the Attic, and we are currently in wait mode for
more projects.

19 Jan 2011 [Gianugo Rabellino / Noirin]

Since the last board report, ORO, ECS and Slide are now retired.
Excalibur is in the works. No changes to the PMC. No issues requiring
board attention.

20 Oct 2010 [Gianugo Rabellino / Roy]

- Good news: a bunch of projects moved to the Attic: Jakarta's
ECS/ORO/Slide, and XML's Crimson.

- after an initial standstill, migration of the above is chugging along.

- no issues requiring board attention at this time

21 Jul 2010 [Henri Yandell / Noirin]

No issues for the board.

* iBATIS has moved to the attic with a few outstanding tasks [ATTIC-66].

* Quetzalcoatl has moved over to the Attic with a few outstanding
tasks [ATTIC-67].

Nothing else is in the pipeline, though Crimson (XML), ECS (Jakarta),
ORO (Jakarta) and Regexp (Jakarta) are possibles.

I (Henri) have asked for volunteers to replace me as the VP. Gianugo
has volunteered and we may have a resolution in in time for the board
meeting.

19 May 2010 [Henri Yandell / Jim]

No issues for the board.

* Jakarta Taglibs moved to the Attic.
* Jakarta Slide needs moving.
* Nothing else in the pipeline.

Jim notes that there may be things in the pipeline shortly.

21 Apr 2010 [Henri Yandell / Greg]

Jim to contact Henri

20 Jan 2010 [Henri Yandell / Brett]

No issues for the board.

* Beehive has been Attic'd
* Xang has moved into the Attic from the xml.apache.org project
* Crimson still expected at some point (pending XML PMC).

21 Oct 2009 [Henri Yandell / Brett]

In August AxKit moved into the Attic. Greg Reddin took care of
things and it appeared to go very smoothly.

The XML project have very recently voted for Xang to move to the
Attic, and we understand that Crimson (XML parser before Xerces)
may follow.

19 Aug 2009 [Henri Yandell / Geir]

No report provided.

15 Jul 2009 [Henri Yandell / Brian]

Nothing to report this month. We don't know of any projects currently
looking to move to the Attic.

As things have quietened down, and we have a repeatable process for
the next entry into the Attic, we'd like to move to quarterly reports.

General agreement that this report should become quarterly.

17 Jun 2009 [Henri Yandell / J Aaron]

This month Apache Shale entered the Attic, pending INFRA-2072.

The process for entering the Attic has been defined:

 http://attic.apache.org/process.html

We are not aware of any projects entering the Attic next month.

Aaron to add link to mail-archives.apache.org.

20 May 2009 [Henri Yandell / Jim]

This month HiveMind moved to the Attic. The one outstanding action
is removal of its unix group, but otherwise it is closed down with a task
for the future to evaluate deleting the hivemind-user@ mailing list.
Users have indicated the desire to fork HiveMind at the OPS4J open
development umbrella. One question that came up during that
discussion was noting that the HiveMind software used the older
copyright header (in the header rather than the NOTICE), and our
decision not to fix that. A JIRA item was used to manage the end of
life process [ATTIC-1].

All of this will be documented this month to define a repeatable
process, and applied to Shale which voted to enter the Attic last
month [this will be on this month's board meeting agenda].

Henri noted that the Unix group is now deleted.

15 Apr 2009 [Henri Yandell / Geir]

No activity this month.

Current action item is to followup on the HiveMind project now being
in the Attic by making that apparent to the users.

There was a short discussion about the Attic reporting frequency. For the next few months, Attic is on a monthly reporting schedule, as proposed by Henri.

18 Mar 2009 [Henri Yandell / Jim]

The HiveMind PMC have voted to move to the Attic. The Attic PMC will
be working with the board to effect resolutions such that oversight
over HiveMind is passed over to the Attic PMC.

Focus next month will be on making the change such that HiveMind
is now recognizably in the Attic.

18 Feb 2009 [Henri Yandell / J Aaron]

Not much activity this month. A mail was sent to private@hivemind +
private@attic following the HiveMind chair - James Carman's interest
in the attic to point out the two directions of either moving into the
attic, or being restarted in the Incubator. James was interested in the
Incubator direction (to which the need for mentors + champions was
pointed out) and Howard as in favour of the attic.

I've also been asking on members@ as to Apache's trademark position,
partly to understand what the fork of HiveMind would look like.

We discussed the issue of being willing to turn over trademarks for future development while wanting to retain ability to use the trademark for prior releases. Discussion will continue on members@.

21 Jan 2009 [Henri Yandell / Sam]

Apache Attic's site has been launched at http://attic.apache.org/ and
hooked to the ASF website, and an announcement email has been sent out
to all pmcs. We're ready for our first zombie.

We discussed the HiveMind, JServe, some retired projects in Jakarta, Excalibur, and Shale as projects to explore as potential candidates.

17 Dec 2008 [Henri Yandell / Bertrand]

Henri provided a verbal report.

Things have got started with Apache Attic - the email and website space have been setup. People are subscribing to the general mailing list and initial discussions started around what to put on the website have begun.

Establish the Apache Attic Project

WHEREAS, the Board of Directors deems it to be in the best
interests of the Foundation and consistent with the
Foundation's purpose to establish a Project Management
Committee charged with the oversight of projects which
 otherwise would not have oversight.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that a Project Management
Committee (PMC), to be known as the "Apache Attic Project",
be and hereby is established pursuant to Bylaws of the
 Foundation; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Apache Attic Project be and hereby is
responsible for the oversight of projects which
otherwise would not have oversight; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Apache Attic Project be and hereby is
not authorized to actively develop and release the projects
under its oversight; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the office of "Vice President, Apache Attic" be
and hereby is created, the person holding such office to
serve at the direction of the Board of Directors as the chair
of the Apache Attic Project, and to have primary responsibility
for management of the projects within the scope of
responsibility of the Apache Attic Project; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the persons listed immediately below be and
hereby are appointed to serve as the initial members of the
 Apache Attic Project:

     * Rahul Akolkar             (rahul@apache.org)
