Apache Baremaps is a toolkit and a set of infrastructure components for
creating, publishing, and operating online maps.
Baremaps has been incubating since 2022-10-10.
### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:
1. Expanding the community
2. Making releases
3. Discussing the future of the project
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
We recognize the need to further expand the community and strengthen
contributor retention. We aim to make progress on this in the coming
year.
If these challenges cannot be addressed, we will initiate a discussion on
the project’s future, including the possibility of retiring it from the
Apache Incubator. In that case, development may continue under a lighter
process within its original organization.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
The project activity slowed during the summer but is expected to resume
in the coming months.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
We have addressed security issues and introduced security guidelines.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
No
### How has the community developed since the last report?
There has been an uptick in activity early this year, which has since
slowed down.
One difficulty we face is related to the onboarding and retention of new
contributors.
We have a number of easy bug fixes that are suitable for newcomers, but we
also have advanced features that require a deeper understanding of the
codebase.
This can be intimidating for new contributors, leading to a lack of
engagement after initial contributions.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
We released version 0.8.2 in February 2025.
Since then, we have added support for Apache Calcite, which will open the
door to spatial SQL queries on various data sources (flatgeobuf, PostGIS,
geopackage, geoparquet, etc.).
We also fixed a number of bugs and upgraded dependencies.

### IPMC/Shepherd notes:
PJF: The BareMaps active community remains small. Possibly, too small to
be be able to become a self-managing PMC on graduation.
JM: They have added 3 committers. I would suggest they look to see if any
of those or any other committers can be made PPMC members.

contributions. We still struggle with the pace of releases, but the overall

Several animated discussions allowed us to address licensing issues.
The fact that practices vary widely across top-level projects does not
make
the process easier.

The last release effectively summarizes the project's development since
the

More recently, we welcomed three new contributors.
Yongjun Hong contributed issue templates and github actions to facilitate

## Cloudberry
Cloudberry is one advanced and mature open-source Massively Parallel
Processing (MPP) database, which evolves from the open-source version of
the Pivotal Greenplum Database®️ but features a newer PostgreSQL kernel and
more advanced enterprise capabilities. It can serve as a data warehouse and
can also be used for large-scale analytics and AI/ML workloads.
Cloudberry has been incubating since 2024-10-11.
### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:
1. Finish the source code cleanup.
* Rename the old brand:
https://github.com/apache/cloudberry/pull/731.
* Update the NOTICE and LICENSE files
https://github.com/apache/cloudberry/pull/812.
* Check the Apache License headers.
2. Publish the first Apache release.
3. Grow the community and attract more contributors and users.
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
No.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
1. We shared project updates across social channels and encouraged
community members to submit sessions for upcoming conferences.
2. Our Slack community has grown to 128 members.
3. Key topics are actively discussed on the mailing list (92
messages in Nov 2024, 110 messages in Dec 2024, and 49 messages in Jan
2025).
4. 6 new contributors to the main repo since joining the Apache
Incubator.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
- We established a basic CI/CD workflow using GitHub Actions to support
daily development activities.
- We initiated and finalized the Cloudberry roadmap discussion.
Currently, we’re focusing on high-priority tasks, including cherry-picking
commits from the open-source Greenplum project into Cloudberry.
- Additionally, we’ve been enriching documentation and enhancing the site
user experience.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
We believe that most of the issues related to licensing have now been
addressed. The next step is to remove the DISCLAIMER-WIP in future releases.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
No new committer joined the project, but a few issues, documentation
improvements, and pull requests were submitted by external contributors.
### How has the project developed since the last report?

smoothly. A nice collaborative effort also started to implement a
GeoParquet reader and to support OvertureMaps files.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
We underestimated the effort required to make the project compliant with
Apache guidelines.
In particular, some datasets used in the code (EPSG) and in the tests
(OpenStreetMap, NaturalEarth, Ripe, etc.) were causing licensing issues.
We hope that closing these issues will help us increase the release
frequency and focus on growing the community.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
No new committer joined the project.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
We have now been able to remove all the licensed datasets with synthetic
ones, and we should be able to remove the disclaimer-wip soon.
We improved the style and the tileset of the basemap.
We introduced a new workflow for the daylight map distribution (Microsoft
and Google Building Footprints, Facebook Experimental ML Roads, etc.)[1,2].
We added support for the PMTiles format.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
We acknowledge that we need to make progress on community building and will
try to focus on this aspect in 2024.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
We had a few external contributions to the project, but no new committer
joined the community. Most notably, Joe Polastre, from FlightAware, the
world's largest flight tracking and data platform, created a fast tile
exporter for Baremaps written in Go [1]. Some of his ideas have already
been contributed back to the project. We also started interesting
discussions with the Apache SIS community regarding spatial data codecs [2].

Someone submitted our website to HackerNews and we remained on the
frontpage for about 16 hours [1]. Our demonstration server hosted on
Hetzner (16 cores; 128GB of RAM; 8TB of NVMe SSD) successfully sustained
this load and served more than 40GB of tiles from Postgis during this
period of time [2]. Additionally, the OpenStreetMap Wiki now offers the
possibility to display vector maps based on Baremaps on its pages [3].
This
raises the following question: Could the demonstration server be hosted by
the ASF at some point?

### How has the community developed since the last report?
The activity has increased. Five people made their first contribution to
the code base since the last report, one of whom has been elected as a
committer in May. The activity on the mailing list is very low, but the
number of exchanges on GitHub increased.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
We significantly improved the basemap at low zoom levels
We improved the layout and the content of the web site
We continued to address licensing issues
