I think we should just graduate Chukwa. They have met all documented Incubator requirements, the only reason they're not graduated is that there isn't loads of development activity going on. Other low activity podlings have graduated before, Wink is a good example, or Steve which didn't even incubate. Chukwa has been incubating for 3 years so aren't just some fly-by-night thing, the "How has the project developed since the last report?" section of this report shows there is work going on, and that they fixed the javadoc frame injection security vulnerability shows they do jump to it when issues that need to be addressed arise. We're not adding any value to the podling by keeping it here in the Incubator, we should graduate them, perhaps including the mentors on the PMC if that helps alleviate any worries.

A retiring voting thread on Chukwa mailing list, and the voting
passed. A second vote thread in Incubator mailing list was cancelled.
After further discussion, there are activities on Chukwa community
from contributors, and there is only a few contributors voiced to
continue. William A Rowe Jr and Chris Douglas have resigned from
mentor position. Bill resigned to reduce excessive participation in
too many communties. Chris resigned in protest of difference in
opinion of Chukwa graduation/retirement decision. There were
important discussions in Chukwa private, and incubator list, which
mentors did not agree on the community activity can meet graduation.
The worry of growth has taken it's toll in Chukwa community in the
past 2 years. New plans are recommended from Alan Cabrera to plan for
what the community want to do in 2013.
How has the community developed since the last report?
The development activities is near the same level as the last report,
incremental and small improvements.
How has the project developed since the last report?
We added new JMX adaptor to stream monitoring metrics from Java
process. A small number of bug fixes, and planning for the following
changes in 2013:
- Primary focus is to collect Hadoop and related technology log files and
metrics
- Add web UI for showing a list of running adaptors
- Add web UI for showing status of data streams written to destination
- Consolidate Agent and Collector features to use Chukwa Agent as the
primary process for data collection
- Replace SequenceFileWriter with WebHDFS support, discuss if changing
sequence file format to avro make sense

Chukwa is built on top of the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), HBase and Map/Reduce framework and inherits Hadoop’s scalability and robustness. Chukwa also includes a flexible and powerful toolkit for displaying, monitoring and analyzing results to make the best use of the collected data. Incubating since July, 2010. - Mailing lists have some activities. - 2 new committers since July. - 3 new contributors submitted patches since last report in July. Most important issues to address: Growing the community, especially a new release manager Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be aware of: None at this time. How has the community developed since the last report: Plan to release version 0.6 to fix some of the major bugs in version 0.5. How has the project developed since the last report: More patches are received from new committer and contributors. The new patches are better quality to polish Chukwa code base for 0.6 release. Chukwa community need to train new release manager to release Chukwa 0.6 to ensure the community can continue to flourish. How has the project developed since the last report: Prior to Hadoop summit, there was a thread discussion of retiring Chukwa because there does not seem to be much activity in the community. All PPMC members seem to agree to this idea. There were some free advertisement for Chukwa in Hadoop summit from word of mouth and speakers mentioned Chukwa in their talks. There seems to be some contribution activities happening after Hadoop summit. Discussion continued for retiring Chukwa because mentor does not think a community is developing. We plan to open enrollment for Chukwa committers for people who are interested to continue development for the next quarter. Since joining the incubator, we have been unable to roll a release because these requirements were not met. Chukwa is a distributed log collection and processing system built on top of Hadoop and HBase. Chukwa is waiting for a official working release of Hadoop 0.2x and HBase 0.9x. There are certain API incompatibility in metrics collection system to prevent them working together. This is a blocker for Chukwa 0.5 release. Chukwa entered incubation on August 5th, 2010.
Chukwa is a distributed log collection and processing system built on top of Hadoop. Chukwa has migrated from relational database to Apache HBase 0.20.6 for data storage. New aggregation script has been built using Apache Pig 0.8 and Apache HBase 0.20.6 combination. Next steps are to begin preparations for Chukwa 0.5 release.
We're mostly marking time. We have a dependency on HBase, but their latest version broke some things we rely on. Waiting for them to fix, (which they are scheduled to do) pending a Chukwa release. People are still supplying bug fix patches. We're also still adding documentation.

Chukwa is transforming to use HBase for storing data to reduce data latency, the existing data collection on Hadoop and map/reduce is still supported. Chukwa entered incubation on August 5th, 2010. = Empire-db = Empire-db is a relational data persistence component that aims to overcome the difficulties, pitfalls and restrictions inherent in traditional Object Relational Management (ORM) approaches. Empire-db is on the Apache Incubator since July 2008. Issues to address in the move towards graduation: We still have not tackled the fact that we need to do more advertising of Empire-db on major development forums/sites/blogs. Community development since the last report New names pop up on the user list/jira which indicates a (slow) growth of our user community. Project development since the last report We're trying to work towards a new release before the end of the year as several issues have been fixed/new features have been implemented.
Chukwa is a distributed log collection and processing system built on top of Hadoop. It is a former Hadoop subproject. Bill Graham has officially granted committer access. Jiaqi Tan has accepted invitation of becoming Chukwa commiter, and pending infrastructure to setup committer access. Chukwa mailing lists have been moved into incubator.apache.org. Chukwa 0.5 is in the process of migrating data storage layer to HBase for faster read/write random access. Chukwa Agent has been improved with new REST API for controlling Chukwa Agent operations.
Chukwa is a distributed log collection and processing system built on top of Hadoop. It is a former Hadoop subproject. CLAs are on file and ASF holds all copyrights. We have been in incubation since July 13, 2010. Since then, we have switched to incubation SVN naming and updated our website to reflect this change. We still need to move mailing lists to incubation. [Pending on Bernd.] We still need to move our website to incubator.apache.org [Pending on permissions]. Should bring onboard more committers; Bill Graham would be the first Chukwa committer not originally part of the project.
