Creadur

21 Feb 2024 [Philipp Ottlinger / Justin]

## Description:
The mission of Creadur is the creation and maintenance of software related to
Comprehension and auditing of software distributions

## Project Status:
Current project status:ongoing - high
Issues for the board: none

## Membership Data:
Apache Creadur was founded 2012-04-18 (12 years ago)
There are currently 13 committers and 12 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 7:6.

Community changes, past quarter:
- Claude Warren was added to the PMC on 2024-01-23
- Jean-Baptiste Onofré was added to the PMC on 2024-01-23

## Project Activity:
Apache Rat 0.16.1 was released on 2024-01-24.
Apache Rat 0.16 was released on 2023-12-28.

RAT 0.16 was a major change as the new SPDX feature was introduced.
RAT 0.16.1 is a small feature release and contains multiple changes
to the webpage to further comply with the ASF rules
(added privacy menu item, do not load fonts from Google anymore).

Development on 0.17 started off
as more and more people seem to use RAT from the cli.

Subprojects Tentacles and Whisker are mainly in dormant state,
receive dependency updates but no real code change at the moment.

## Community Health:
We were able to add 2 people to the PMC.

Development skyrocketed compared to the time before 0.16.

Due to some problems in 0.16 we had to provide
a new release 0.16.1 rather quick to address missing information
on the project webpage and fixed the underlying issues.

dev@creadur.apache.org had a 738% increase
in traffic in the past quarter
(956 emails compared to 114)
13 issues opened in JIRA,
past quarter (225% increase)
7 issues closed in JIRA,
past quarter (133% increase)
284 commits in the past quarter
(222% increase)
8 code contributors in the past quarter
(100% increase)
93 PRs opened on GitHub,

- No new PMC members. Last addition was Karl Heinz Marbaise on 2016-08-30.
- No new committers. Last addition was Karl Heinz Marbaise on 2016-08-30.

## Project Activity:
When we wanted to start a new release a lot of contributions
and bug reports and fixes came in. So the project's activity skyrocketed.
Release 0.16 will be created once that contributions stabilized new features.

## Community Health:
With 2 new contributors the project sort of rebooted and
awoke from its dormant state.
The contributors (mainly one) started a lot of discussions
about new features and bugfixes.
This all happens via Github PRs and mail threads.

- dev@creadur.apache.org had a 125% increase in traffic in the past quarter
(237 emails compared to 105)
- 15 issues opened in JIRA, past quarter (400% increase)
- 5 issues closed in JIRA, past quarter (66% increase)

 * Apache Rat 0.15 was released on 2022-09-17.
 * Apache Rat 0.14 was released on 2022-05-28.

Upcoming changes in Maven 4.x require RAT plugin changes that were
contributed. Apart from that interest in SPDX license scanning was raised.
Questions are being answered, while activity remains steady and low.

## Community Health:
ClaudeW from Apache Pekko started discussions concerning SPDX license
detection and contributed to an existing Jira ticket. Apart from that regular
low activity
(dependency updates, minor questions being answered).

 Apache Rat 0.14 was released on 2022-05-28.
 Apache Rat 0.13 was released on 2018-10-13.

New release activity started for Apache Creadur Tentacles -
a release draft was voted for and
some work needs to be done in Jira and webpage to properly
publish the new release. Work is going on in TENTACLES-16.

Overall activity remains stable but low.

## Community Health:
dev@creadur.apache.org had a 115% increase in traffic

6 code contributors in the past quarter (50% increase)
39 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (30% increase)
42 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (44% increase)

In general committer activity remains low.
We had problems to get enough votes for RAT v0.15.

I asked all committers to subscribe to the private mailing list,
but did not get any response so far.
(This was a request from former board meetings)

As Creadur's subprojects Tentacles and whisker did not get much attention
I'm happy that someone created a Tentacles 0.1 release and work continues.

We are planning to release RAT 0.14,
but due to lack of time no release date is scheduled yet.

## Community Health:
There's interest in a new release of RAT, but no schedule yet. Due to the fact
that a release has not been performed for some time now I asked the community
for a second pair of eyes as there were so many infrastructure changes after
0.13.

Apart from that other Creadur subprojects have been updated in order to fix
CVEs in dependencies.

Minor bugs have been fixed in the current 0.14-SNAPSHOT. The RAT part of
Creadur is used most often. After ApacheCon2019 in Berlin some discussions and
feature requests were reported. Apache Rat 0.13 was released on 2018-10-13.

## Community Health:
The project benefits from the Github integration as it seems easier to
integrate/file issues/start discussions. Apart from that we successfully
changed the chair of the project.

Change the Apache Creadur Project Chair

 WHEREAS, the Board of Directors heretofore appointed Brian E Fox
 (brianf) to the office of Vice President, Apache Creadur, and

 WHEREAS, the Board of Directors is in receipt of the resignation of
 Brian E Fox from the office of Vice President, Apache Creadur, and

 WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache Creadur project
 has chosen by vote to recommend Philipp Ottlinger (pottlinger) as the
 successor to the post;

 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Brian E Fox is relieved and
 discharged from the duties and responsibilities of the office of Vice
 President, Apache Creadur, and

 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Philipp Ottlinger be and hereby is
 appointed to the office of Vice President, Apache Creadur, to serve in
 accordance with and subject to the direction of the Board of Directors
 and the Bylaws of the Foundation until death, resignation, retirement,
 removal or disqualification, or until a successor is appointed.

 Special Order 7C, Change the Apache Creadur Project Chair, was
 approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.

20 Nov 2019 [Brian E Fox / Daniel]

Apache Creadur creates and maintains a suite of open source software related
to the auditing and comprehension of software distributions. Any language and
build system are welcomed.

Status
------

Creadur is primarily used by other Apache projects to help check for
conformity to ASF standards. This is why the project team is primarily
comprised of members and committers from other ASF projects. The risk
of the project foundering is therefore very low despite the ongoing
lack of progress.

If someone has an itch to scratch, it will no doubt get fixed.

@Shane: pursue a report for Creadur

20 Feb 2019 [Brian E Fox / Roman]

Apache Creadur creates and maintains a suite of open source software
related to the auditing and comprehension of software distributions.
Any language and build system are welcomed.

Status

------
Creadur is primarily used by other Apache projects to help check for
conformity to ASF standards. This is why the project team is primarily
comprised of members and committers from other ASF projects. The risk
of the project foundering is therefore very low despite the ongoing
lack of progress.

If someone has an itch to scratch, it will no doubt get fixed.

questions about how it relates to Creadur / RAT. There were no specific

partof DRAT. Otherwise, no changes to the code.

Since this is a low activity project, a vote was called on the content of this

The project has missed reporting to the board for several months. The
last report was back in November 2013.

November saw some activity with several issues being resolved in Rat.
In December the work of a GSOC student was merged into a branch of our
own SVN repository. After that it's been mostly quiet on the mailing
lists, apart from questions and requests from other Apache projects.
There seems to be an increase in the use of Rat within the ASF.

If the current chair continues to remains absent, we will need some
guidance from the board on how to proceed.

level project, handover is now complete.

Issues
------
We have no issues requiring board attention at the moment.

Branding and Trademarks
-----------------------
The site has now been checked and updated against the
branding policy. In particular:
* Project Website Basics
* Website Navigation Links
* Trademark Attributions
* Logos and Graphics
* Project Metadata
* Read PMC Branding Responsibilities

Community
---------
Interest seems to be slowly building, which is encouraging.
We hope to focus on continuing to improve the documentation
and creating a first release for Apache Whisker.

Infrastructure
--------------
We are still trying to discover the best way to maintain
a mix of subsites generated by and hand maintained content
in Apache CMS. Thanks to Infrastructure for their help
and advice.

Releases
--------
None (yet). The last release happened while the project was
incubating: RAT 0.8 released in November 2011.

We hope to cut the first release of Apache Whisker very
soon.

Community Objectives
--------------------
* Improve quantity of documentation on site
* Release Apache Whisker 0.1

(Creadur)

20 Jun 2012 [Robert Burrell Donkin / Sam]

Apache Creadur creates and maintains a suite of open source
software related to the auditing and comprehension of
software distributions. Any language and build system are
welcomed.

Project Status
--------------
Creadur graduated from the Apache Incubator in April, 2012.
The handover has been very slow going, but is very nearly
complete. Thanks to the infrastructure team for their help.

Handover
--------
Complete:
* New Chair tasks (subscriptions, update officers, etc)
* Reporting schedule
* PMC bootstrap tasks
* Transfer source
* Transfer mailing lists
* Update issue tracker
* Infra tasks
* Transfer website
* Update incubator records
Pending Next Release (as per guidelines)
* Distribution mirrors

Community
---------
* Creadur needs to rebuild momentum and to attract new
 contributors. Our first steps will be website
 improvements and the first release of Apache Whisker
 (see below).

Infrastructure
--------------
* Thanks to the infra team for a smooth handover
* Our website uses the CMS, and is ready for svnpubsub. The
 community is still discussing the best approach towards
 maintaining content generated by Maven.

Releases
--------
None (yet). The last release happened while the project was
incubating: RAT 0.8 released in November 2011.

We hope to cut the first release of Apache Whisker very
soon. This tool generates and audits licensing information
from meta-data. Helpful for applications assembled from 100s
of components, such as Apache James Server.

Branding and Trademarks
-----------------------
Currently our website doesn't conform to all requirements.
In particular the product subsites need more work.

Community Objectives
--------------------
* Improve impact and visibility of site, and bring the site fully
 into line with the branding guidelines
* Release Apache Whisker 0.1

Issues
------
* None requiring board attention at this time
