Apache Curator was founded 2013-09-18 (10 years ago)
There are currently 16 committers and 16 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is 1:1.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Kezhu Wang on 2023-03-25.
- No new committers. Last addition was Kezhu Wang on 2023-03-24.

## Project Activity:
As usual the traffic is not very high, but the project is moving forward.

5.5.0 was released on 2023-04-28.
5.4.0 was released on 2022-10-28.

## Community Health:
The community is running, but it is quite little. We are used to see waves of
changes / discussions, and the past quarter was pretty quiet. We haven't seen
new contributors in the past quarter.

Relevant metrics:
- dev@curator.apache.org had a 12% increase in traffic in the past quarter (45
 emails compared to 40)
- user@curator.apache.org had a 44% increase in traffic in the past quarter
 (13 emails compared to 9)

- No new committers. Last addition was Kezhu Wang on 2023-03-24.

## Project Activity:
In the past quarter we didn't see much activity but we saw PRs from new
contributors. We will probably cut a release soon in order to deliver the
changes to the community.

Recent releases:
5.5.0 was released on 2023-04-28.
5.4.0 was released on 2022-10-28.
5.3.0 was released on 2022-07-04.

## Community Health:

As reported above we had some contributions by new users. Not enough to say
they they can be invited as committers. There is one in progress work to add
support for a new feature (OpenTelemetry support) and this is good for the
project, that tends to be tied to ZooKeeper lifecycle.

Some interesting data:
- dev@curator.apache.org had a 42% decrease in traffic in the past quarter (44
 emails compared to 75)
- user@curator.apache.org had a 66% increase in traffic in the past quarter
 (10 emails compared to 6)

## Community Health:

During this quarter activity slowed down a little bit, but we are still
accepting patches, almost all the patches are contributed by committers. The
contributions are about small fixes and enhancements, driver by user requests.
Overall the community is small but healthy.

As the project is pretty stable, contributors happen to come to the project,
file a issue or pull request and then their are done.

coming and a few patches from non committers. We cut a release quite recently
(3 month ago). We still don't have good candidates to be invited as new

## Description:

The project is mostly tied to Apache ZooKeeper, as ZooKeeper cut recently a
new major release, we expect a new release of Curator to be released soon.

5.1.0 was released on 2020-07-03. Apache Curator 5.0.0 was released on
2020-05-28. Apache Curator 4.3.0 was released on 2020-02-29. here]

## Community Health:
Unfortunately most of the committers are no more working actively on the
project in their job, all of the PMC members and committers are volunteers.

We are answering quickly to every request from the users and it looks like the
project is still broadly used, simply it is very stable.

## Description:

## Issues:
No critical issues. But we are lacking of continuative contributions from non

community in order to have candidates to invite, but actually we are not
making process in this direction.

## Community Health:
The project is healthy, there is not much activity, this is probably due to
the current stability of our codebase and to the fact that we are mostly bound
to the pace of releases and new features of Apache ZooKeeper.

We recently added a new high level feature from a new contributor and we are
planning to cut a new major release soon, but probably this will be happen
right after the next major release of ZooKeeper (that is under VOTE during
these days).

We see good discussions on the ML and on JIRA.

## Description:
The mission of Curator is the creation and maintenance of software related to
Java libraries that make using Apache ZooKeeper easier

## Issues:
Currently there is not much activity on the project, basically we are
following the pace of Apache ZooKeeper, as Curator is mostly a wrapper over
ZooKeeper.

We recently started a discussion about the status of the project in 2020, and
community feedback was that Curator is pretty widespread, and it works well,
so this is why there is not so much activity. Currently most of the committers
are no more working on Curator in their main job

By the way we see users asking questions on the ML and recently we received an
offer about a contribution of some important new features. This new work will
add more liveness to the project.

## Project Activity:

## Community Health:
While I still think the Curator community is healthy I was disappointed by the
lack of engagement recently with an important issue with Curator (see thread
here:
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/curator-dev/202005.mbox/%3cE5511DF7-06EB-43B9-851E-E08FCDA8A204@jordanzimmerman.com%3e).
I tried to get engagement as hard as I could - email, Slack, cross-posting to
ZooKeeper, Twitter - still only the 3 active Curator committers responded. I
don't know what to do about this. I know that Curator is used throughout the
Tech industry - why don't they take more interest in it? I don't know.

## Project Activity:
- Interest in Curator has increased recently matching the increased activity
 from new committers in ZooKeeper.
- We have two new releases planned:
 - 4.3.0 is a bug fix release being voted on right now and will hopefully be
   released soon
 - A possible 5.0.0 is being worked on to make Curator compatible with the
   upcoming 3.6.0 release of ZooKeeper
- The Curator team is working on a number of things:
 - Some important bug fixes were merged from the community for 4.3.0
 - Refactoring and removing a bunch of cruft/tech debt for upcoming 5.0.0
 - Added new features to support corresponding ZooKeeper 3.6.0 features

## Recent Releases
- Apache Curator 4.2.0 was released on 2019-03-06.
- Apache Curator 4.3.0 is being voted on right now and will be released as
 soon as the community accepts this version
- We have plans for Curator 5.0.0 sometime in 2020

## Community Health:
Curator is healthier than it has been in a while. We now have 3 active
committers who are engaged. We also get regular input from community members
with bug reports, PRs, etc. We still need more active engagement from the
community, however. Given how widely used Curator is it can be frustrating
that there aren't more people active in the project. We continue to reach out
in various forums: Apache Slack, email, Stackoverflow, etc.

## Description:

- The Apache Curator Java libraries make using Apache ZooKeeper much easier
 and more reliable.

## Issues:

- Curator participated in the "help wanted" project. To date, we've not
 gotten any real help. People don't even bother to subscribe to the mailing
 list. It appears they are just fishing to see if they can pad their CVs.
 So, this isn't a Curator "issue" per se, but I thought I'd take this
 opportunity to report about it.

## Activity:

- Curator activity is normal for this period
- We continue to produce releases, field questions, etc.
- We continue to track releases of Apache ZooKeeper and try to stay current
 with it

## Health report:

- Curator is a healthy, active project. We have consistent, quality input
 from the community and Curator usage continues to grow.
- I've learned that Facebook will be standardizing on Apache Curator as its
 primary ZooKeeper client - good news!
- Curator's health is intimately tied to Apache ZooKeeper and, from our
 perspective, Apache ZooKeeper is a very healthy project
- Curator could use 1 or 2 more active committers. A few individuals have
 been identified and, assuming they continue to contribute, votes can take
 place

Please accept my apology for the tardiness of this report.

The Apache Curator Java libraries make using Apache ZooKeeper much easier and
more reliable.

Community
=========
The Curator community is active and healthy. We have regular and active
participation on the mailing list, Jira and github.

Adoption continues to grow. Notably: Apache Hive and Apache Yarn
are now using Curator.

Development
===========
Since our last report Curator has had two successful releases by different
build managers.

Issues for board consideration
==============================
None currently

The Apache Curator Java libraries make using Apache ZooKeeper much easier and
more reliable.

Community
=========
* Since our last report Curator has added two new committers, Cameron MacKenzie
and Scott Blum. They have both been very active and the project has benefited
greatly from them.

* Numerous online articles that mention Curator have been written:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CURATOR/Third+Party+Articles

Development
===========
* Several successful releases have occurred since the last report

* Curator's adoption continues to grow:

Issues for board consideration

None currently

The Apache Curator Java libraries make using Apache ZooKeeper much
easier and more reliable.

Project Status
===========
Since the last report, there have been several successful releases.
2.5.0 is the latest release.

Community
========
The Curator community continues to grow. This is a good time to report
on how Curator has been integrated in the larger ZooKeeper community.

* Curator is a component in other open source projects including
Apache Storm, Metamarkets Druid, Apache Drill, Apache Oozie, Apache
Spark, Spring SD, and many, many more.

* There have been dozens of articles written either about or
mentioning Apache Curator.

* According to Ohloh, there have been 11 contributors to the project

Issues
=====
In the last report, it was mentioned that Curator only has 1 active
committer. I think this was a bit misleading. Curator has had no
problems getting votes for releases. Many people contribute to the
development of Curator. The main issue is that stewardship of Curator
falls mainly on me (Jordan Zimmerman). The good news is that I've been
mentoring others and am very close to getting at least one and
possibly two more committers who will be active stewards of Curator. I
hope to have this by the next report.

19 Mar 2014 [Jordan Zimmerman / Shane]

Project Status
==============
* 2.4.1 maintenance released currently being voted on

Community
=========
* In the past 5 weeks 10 issues were resolved
* Last release: 2.4.0 on Feb 8, 2014
* Curator switched to a Github mirror and will now take Pull
Requests instead of patches

Issues for board consideration
==============================
* Curator continues to have only 1 active committer however
patches/PRs are coming from a good number of unique active users

AI Shane: is there a plan to attract new committers/PMC members?
