Community changes, past quarter: - Zhihua Deng was added to the PMC on 2024-10-12 - Dmitriy Fingerman was added as committer on 2024-11-12 - Shohei Okumiya was added as committer on 2024-11-12 ## Project Activity: 4.0.1 was released on 2024-10-02. 2.3.10 was released on 2024-05-09. 4.0.0 was released on 2024-03-29. Discussions around having 4.1.0 release have started, the community is discussing on the scope & timeline of the release. ## Community Health: The community remains vibrant and engaged, with meaningful contributions and active discussions on the mailing list. The recent Hive 4.x release has generated interest, evidenced by several inquiries—an encouraging sign of its growing adoption. Notably, projects like Apache Ranger, BigTop, and ShardingSphere have already transitioned to using this latest release in their codebases. The community continues to support projects and individuals in adopting Hive 4.x, providing guidance and assistance when needed. So far, no significant issues have been reported with the release. Looking ahead, the community is focused on key initiatives, including adding JDK-17 support for the next release, along with ongoing improvements and bug fixes. The project is actively discussing on having a 4.0.1 release (expected Sep-24) ## Community Health: Overall, the community remains healthy, with a steady stream of commits and active discussions on various topics. While the number of commits has decreased slightly, this is likely due to the prior quarter's focus on the 4.0 release, which temporarily increased activity. There's no cause for concern. Last addition was Krisztian Kasa on 2023-01-30. - Simhadri Govindappa was added as committer on 2024-04-18 ## Project Activity: Apache Hive 4.0.0 was released on 2024-03-29. It is the the first major stable release since 2018 (release of 3.0.0) with more than 5K commits from ~400 contributors. It is a big milestone for the community who has been working hard the past few years. The 4.0.0 release featured in news.apache.org [1] and feathercast [2]. Apache Hive 2.3.10 was released on 2024-05-09. This is a minor release with few but critical fixes that aims to facilitate some other projects like Apache Spark giving them a bit more time till they attempt an upgrade to the latest stable release. Along with the release of Apache 4.0.0 the community declared EOL for Hive 1.X and Hive 2.X to focus the available resources to the more recent releases. The community has been working to address/close the security vulnerabilities and finalized the work for CVE-2023-35701. Recent releases: 4.0.0-beta-1 was released on 2023-08-14. 4.0.0-alpha-2 was released on 2022-11-16. 4.0.0-alpha-1 was released on 2022-03-30. WHEREAS, the Board of Directors heretofore appointed Ashutosh Chauhan (hashutosh) to the office of Vice President, Apache Hive, and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors is in receipt of the resignation of Ashutosh Chauhan from the office of Vice President, Apache Hive, and WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache Hive project has chosen by vote to recommend Naveen Gangam (ngangam) as the successor to the post; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Ashutosh Chauhan is relieved and discharged from the duties and responsibilities of the office of Vice President, Apache Hive, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Naveen Gangam be and hereby is appointed to the office of Vice President, Apache Hive, to serve in accordance with and subject to the direction of the Board of Directors and the Bylaws of the Foundation until death, resignation, retirement, removal or disqualification, or until a successor is appointed. Community changes, past quarter: - Denys Kuzmenko was added to the PMC on 2022-02-06 - Ayush Saxena was added as committer on 2022-01-31 - Zhihua Deng was added as committer on 2022-01-11 - Sai Hemanth Gantasala was added as committer on 2022-02-23 ## Project Activity: There were multiple minor releases from the project last year. With last being hive-storage-2.7.3 release on 2021-08-03. There has been no major release from the project in over three years. There is an effort underway in the community to do a release from branch-3 with discussion and work ongoing at dev@ list. Some members of the community have started collaborating using slack to speed up that effort. Additionally, there are also discussions ongoing to do a release from the main branch. ## Community Health: Continuing with the trend from previous quarters activity is down on both dimensions of discussions (mailing lists) as well as dev activity (jira, PRs). Decrease in traffic over various lists is in order of 20-40% Although decrease in activity has continued over previous few quarters, we still saw nearly ~300 emails on dev list and nearly 160 commits in repository over last quarter.

Other activity metrics for project has gone down with reduced email volume on dev and user lists. It is likely because of increasing maturity of project and is not considered a cause of concern at this time.

Last addition was Anishek Agarwal on 2020-02-10. - Karen Coppage was added as committer on 2020-06-09 - Krisztian Kasa was added as committer on 2020-06-09 ## Project Activity: Culminating many rounds of discussion on dev list, project decided to move to Github PR based model of accepting contributions. CI infrastructure is also integrated in the workflow which runs unit tests. Switch happened in early June and is working will till now. Because of shutdown of svn based CMS system of Apache infra, project is moving website content to project code repository and will be using Github pages as deployment mechanism. Transition is still in progress. ## Community Health: Community is healthy generally. Slight decrease in traffic on user@ list. Dev activity moving from jira to Github.

This work may also result in changing workflow to be git PR based one. ## Community Health: We saw lot of new activity in community this quarter. We gained nearly 20 new contributors to project. Further, almost 50% increase in jira issues reported and fixed. We also see community adopting Github based PR model with nearly 50% new contributions coming in via Github PR.

We still closed 250 jiras indicating a good pace of development.

- Alan Gates (PMC member) found a violation of our trademark and got in touch
with project owner. Matter was resolved quickly as project owner agreed to

- Last quarter we reported about multiple security issues found in Hive. We
released 2.3.3 this quarter addressing those issues.
- Cloudera hosted User group meetup on May 9th. Event was well attended. In
addition to short presentations, this time we also had a panel discussion
on Metastore.
- After an elongated discussion on dev@ project decided to adopt "Green Build
policy" wherein it was agreed upon that no commits are permitted without
getting +1 from automated patch testing. That has led to more discussion
and subsequently improvements in robustness of unit tests and test
infrastructure in project.
- Work is underway to make storage-api 2.7.0 and Hive-3.1 releases.

## Activity:
- Hive continues to develop on multiple fronts. The community recently
agreed to create a branch-1 to maintain stability and backwards compatibility
while developing new functionality on master. The new work includes work to
speed up query processing (llap, hbase-metastore) and simplify code paths
(beeline-cli). A new module was contributed to Hive from the PL/HQL project,
adding procedural SQL to Hive. Work is also on going on improving Hive on
Apache Spark.
## Health report:
- Hive continues to attract new contributors. Development in terms of bug
fixing and new features is strong. Mailing list activity is strong.
## Issues:
- The board has noted that the report has been late multiple times and asked
the PMC to step in this time, One PMC members (Owen O'Malley) suggested it is
time to rotate the chair and one board member (Rich Bowen) concurred.

* In late May Teradata requested that the project remove a UDF
('npath') which was included in the 0.11.0 release. Teradata
alleges that this UDF violates a US patent they hold as well
as their common law trademark. The Hive PMC has referred this issue
to the ASF Legal Board.

WHEREAS, the Board of Directors deems it to be in the best
interests of the Foundation and consistent with the
Foundation's purpose to establish a Project Management
Committee charged with the creation and maintenance of
open-source software related to parallel analysis of large
data sets for distribution at no charge to the public.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that a Project Management
Committee (PMC), to be known as the "Apache Hive Project",
be and hereby is established pursuant to Bylaws of the
Foundation; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Apache Hive Project be and hereby is
responsible for the creation and maintenance of software
related to parallel analysis of large data sets; and be
it further
RESOLVED, that the office of "Vice President, Apache Hive" be
and hereby is created, the person holding such office to
serve at the direction of the Board of Directors as the chair
of the Apache Hive Project, and to have primary responsibility
for management of the projects within the scope of
responsibility of the Apache Hive Project; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the persons listed immediately below be and
hereby are appointed to serve as the initial members of the
Apache Hive Project:

tasked with the creation of a set of bylaws intended to
encourage open development and increased participation in the
Apache Hive Project; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Apache Hive Project be and hereby
is tasked with the migration and rationalization of the Apache
Hadoop Hive sub-project; and be it further
RESOLVED, that all responsibilities pertaining to the Apache
Hive sub-project encumbered upon the
Apache Hadoop Project are hereafter discharged.
