Johnzon

17 Apr 2024 [Jean-Louis Monteiro / Christofer]

A report was expected, but not received

17 Jan 2024 [Jean-Louis Monteiro / Rich]

## Description:
The mission of Johnzon is the creation and maintenance of software related to
JSR-353 compliant JSON parsing; modules to help with JSR-353 as well as JSR-374
and JSR-367

## Project Status:
Current project status: Ongoing. Activity is mainly maintenance unless there
is a new Jakarta release. Jakarta 11 for instance is planned for Q2 2024.
Issues for the board: none.

## Membership Data:
Apache Johnzon was founded 2016-04-20 (8 years ago)
There are currently 8 committers and 6 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is 4:3.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Reinhard Sandtner on 2016-08-30.
- No new committers. Last addition was Jonathan Gallimore on 2018-05-09.

## Project Activity:
We were able to fully pass the JSON-B and JSON-P TCK and do a final release by
the end of 2023. We should maybe claim compliance and be listed in Jakarta as
a compatible implementation. The gaps were pretty big in some parts so it took
a bit more time to catch up. For the moment, we will mainely do maintance
because the code base is stable. Next big chunk of work is planned for Jakarta
11 (Q2).

## Community Health:
We had a few contributors joining the effort to implement Jakarta EE 10,
JSON-P and JSON-B. Since we released, they haven't reached out or
contributed anything, so not yet ready to be invited as committers. The
current committers and PMC are still active and available.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Reinhard Sandtner on 2016-08-30.
- No new committers. Last addition was Jonathan Gallimore on 2018-05-09.

## Project Activity:
The major part of the work to migrate the code to the new jakarta namespace
has been done. The current work is mainly maintenance on previous javax
version which is still by far the most used. We have created 3 maintenance
releases for the javax based version (1.x) and we will create the first
jakarta compatible version pretty soon. We had another security issue to look
at where we agreed it was a bad usage of the library. No further action was
required.

## Community Health:
As described in previous section, the activity decreased because the major
part of the work is done and the product is stable. So there is really only
maintenance for the moment.

## Description:
The mission of Johnzon is the creation and maintenance of software related to
JSR-353 compliant JSON parsing; modules to help with JSR-353 as well as JSR-374
and JSR-367

## Project Status:
Current project status: project is healthy and stable. The Jakarta
implemention for EE 10 is almost done. We even got some help from a new
contributor. In parallel community is still providing patches and backporting
to latest javax based implementation. Issues for the board: no issue for the
board.

- No new PMC members. Last addition was Reinhard Sandtner on 2016-08-30.
- No new committers. Last addition was Jonathan Gallimore on 2018-05-09.

## Project Activity:

As mentioned, most of the effort is focused on the EE 10 compatible
implementation which is 90% done. But as you can see, we do issue regular
maintenance release for the latest javax based implementation. We also got one
security request that resulted in an accepted CVE. We fixed, released and CVE
has been disclosed per Apache process.

- 1.2.21 was released on 2023-06-27.
- 1.2.20 was released on 2023-04-20.
- 1.2.19 was released on 2022-08-17.

## Community Health:
We haven't noticed new potential committers. We had a few contributors, but
not enough to have the conversation.

Recent releases:

 1.2.19 was released on 2022-08-22.
 1.2.18 was released on 2022-05-05.
 1.2.17 was released on 2022-04-21.
 1.2.16 was released on 2022-02-08.
 1.2.15 was released on 2021-10-28.

Currently community is voting on 1.2.20.

Aside from this, we are all hands down to implement the latest Jakarta
specification for Jakarta EE 10. I'm expecting a first alpha or a final if we
can get the TCK to fully pass.

## Community Health:
Traffic has a bit decreased because people are fully focused in implementing
remaining part to be Jakarta EE 10 compliant on JSON-B/JSON-P. Good to see new
non-committer people jumping to help. For instance the polymorphism part is
being worked on by a non-committer.

- No new committers. Last addition was Jonathan Gallimore on 2018-05-09.

## Project Activity:
Apache Johnzon was pretty stable so only few maintenance releases happened to
fix minor bugs.

The community is moving 1.x code base to maintenance and is
switching the main development branch to 2.x. Jakarta EE 10 just got released
and both JSON-B 3.0.0 and JSON-P 2.1.1 received new features and API changes.
So it's time to implement the new version. This is also the opportunity to get
the code base migrated to the jakarta namespace and get away from the shade
approach.

The community is also willing to make Apache Johnzon an official Jakarta
compatible implementation. So there will be some investment to pass the TCK
for both JSON-P and JSON-B.

## Community Health:
Based on the jakarta namespace switch and the new Jakarta EE 10 release, the
community seems to be a bit more active, so are the committers.

## Project Activity:
Apache Johnzon is pretty stable and does not currently require heavy
development. It moves along side with the Jakarta specifications but so far
they do not break or evolve too much. Nevertheless, the project team has
invested a significant effort to rework exception management and end user
experience with errors reported during parsing.

As opposed to other implementations such as Jackson, there is no CVE affecting
Johnzon at the moment. But it drives people to our project as a replacement
which is good.

Recent releases:

 1.2.17 was released on 2022-04-21.
 1.2.16 was released on 2022-02-08.
 1.2.15 was released on 2021-10-28.

## Community Health:
A bit more traffic for the dev list due to the work around user experience and
exceptions.

## Project Activity:
The project has done some important work for user experience. We do now have a
better exception handling with important context and pointers to help the user
to fix parsing issues. This has been done with a microbenchmark in order to keep
the good performances.
The project also worked a bit more on the bytecode enhancement approach to
support jakarta namespace. It might be the last time and it may require a new
branch to apply changes in the source code directly instead.

## Community Health:
With the current work being done on Jakarta and on the user experience, we have
had a good increase in term of development exchanges. User questions and
contributions are pretty stable though.

## Description:
The mission of Johnzon is the creation and maintenance of software related to
JSR-353 compliant JSON parsing; modules to help with JSR-353 as well as JSR-374
and JSR-367

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention. We would just note that since
project is very stable and there is no new version of the specification yet we
are quite low in activity as expected for an implementation of a specification
but work around the spec brings some activity and releases.

## Membership Data:

Recent releases:
- 1.2.16 was released on 2022-02-08.
- 1.2.15 was released on 2021-10-28.
- 1.2.14 was released on 2021-07-05.

## Community Health:
We got some more traffic on the list but overall it is quite constant and
"normal" for the project.

## Project Activity:
We got a maintenance release end of october but project is quite stable. We
mainly enhanced our JSON-P/JSON-Schema ecosystem, fixed a few bugs and started
to align on the next jakarta requirements but more is coming.

Recent releases:
- 1.2.15 was released on 2021-10-28.
- 1.2.14 was released on 2021-07-05.
- 1.2.13 was released on 2021-06-06.

Project got some maintenance related to TomEE TCK work but also some new
features (JSON logic related).

Recent releases:
- 1.2.8 was released on 2020-07-06.
- 1.2.7 was released on 2020-06-04.
- 1.2.6 was released on 2020-05-13.

Project is also working to get Johnzon to be listed as a compatible
implementation for JSON-B and JSON-P on the Jakarta EE Website.

## Community Health:
Due to the activity we got some more jira and mail exchanges than usual. The
exchanges about the related topics were positively moving forward but still
between the same prople (likely due to the same issue mentionned in "issues"
part).

## Community Health:
We saw a change in the activity where JIRA is less used in favor of Github
(thanks gitbox integration). It enables us to get PR and interact more easily
with contributors. Lists got a bit less traffic due to the fact we didn't get
a new version of the specification and Johnzon is quite stable at the moment.

JSON-P/JSON-B specification compatibility kit (tests).

Here are the last releases:

- 1.2.1 was released on 2019-10-03.
- 1.2.0 was released on 2019-09-24.
- 1.1.12 was released on 2019-05-29.

## Community Health:
The mailing list traffic increased quite a lot anf it is interesting
to associate that to the increase pull-request number on github.
Digging into that we see more external contribution which is a very
important sign for us since it gives us back some name for future
committers - we already created some "watch people" thread on the private list
about that.

Metrics:
dev@johnzon.apache.org had a 418% increase in traffic in the past quarter
(503 emails compared to 97)
- 64 issues opened in JIRA, past quarter (357% increase)
- 66 issues closed in JIRA, past quarter (560% increase)
- 99 commits in the past quarter (395% increase)
- 7 code contributors in the past quarter (40% increase)
- 12 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (500% increase)
- 10 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (400% increase)
