Last addition was Robert Varga on 2023-10-31. ## Project Activity: Apache Karaf 4.4.7 release has been delayed in order to give time to investigate refactoring options to fix KARAF-7174. In order to avoid postponing 4.4.7 any longer, the release will be submitted to vote soon and KARAF-7174 will be fixed in 4.4.8. On the Karaf 4.5.0 front, we have a clear roadmap. This release series will: * a new simplified/flat features service (the default feature service in the Karaf distribution will be still the current one) * starting to provide Karaf "internal" services from some features as an alternative to some Pax * components (the default in the Karaf distribution will be still the Pax * components) This is also preparation steps for Karaf 4.6.0 where the above features will be the default. In parallel, we are preparing a new Karaf Decanter release that will include a bunch of fixes and improvements (we are reviewing several PRs right now). ## Community Health: The karaf-integration distribution is still planned for Karaf 4.5.0 (see KARAF-7792 - Provide karaf-integration distribution Open ), possible backported to 4.4.x series as optional feature/distribution. This will need new camel-karaf release fixing issues we identified in the camel-karaf project (like shutdown hook, etc).

We are still preparing Karaf 4.4.7 with several improvements on top of 4.4.6 like Spring 5/6 features, dependency updates. 4.4.7 should be on vote in the coming days. We are also started the discussion about Karaf 4.5.0 and 5.0.0 in terms of features and community expectations. ## Community Health: The karaf-integration distribution is planned for Karaf 4.5.0 (and it will be cherry picked on 4.4.0). Also a new "simple" features resolver will be added to Karaf 4.5.0. We are happy to announce camel-karaf 4.7.0 release, bringing back karaf as camel runtime. It means karaf supports again camel 4.x, including camel:* shell commands, camel-direct-vm/camel-vm components, ...).

The Karaf community started to help on camel-karaf, restarting this project to support Camel 4.x in Karaf (as requested by users), see https://github.com/jbonofre/camel-karaf/tree/REFACTORE The activity was lower in the past quarter as we were working on the 4.5.0 milestone. However the namesearch didn't pass for Sunny, so we plan to submit board resolution to accept Apache Minho as TLP. The resolution will be submitted to the next board meeting. We also discussed about providing a new Karaf distribution named karaf-integration (as we have karaf-minimal), providing basically the same features as Apache ServiceMix distribution. We also plan to move forward on new bundle URL handler, allowing us to avoid ServiceMix bundles release. We also voted to move Karaf Cave and Karaf Winegrower to attic (removing them from website). We discussed with the Camel community about camel-karaf. We proposed (and voted) to move camel-karaf governance to karaf. We didn't reach a consensus. The plan is now to be engaged more within camel-karaf to maintain it and move forward with new features/enhancements.

Decanter, Cellar and Cave releases are also in preparation. ## Community Health: After Karaf 5 became Karaf Minho, we had several discussions with the Karaf community and clearly people wanted to have Minho not coupled to Karaf as it's different communities. Furthermore, we have new features in mind (IoC container, kubernetes packages manager, ...) that are not Karaf specific but more generic. So we decided to create a new Apache TLP named Apache Sunny starting from Karaf Minho and adding these new features and building a dedicated community. The Apache Sunny resolution proposal has been submitted to the board (for December board meeting).

The Karaf subprojects are also active, especially Decanter with a release including new features (Decanter 2.7.0). We reach an important milestone for the project with the release of Karaf 4.3.0. It's a major update for the project. We also did Karaf 4.2.10 which is a maintenance release for our 4.2 users. Couple of Winegrower releases have been done as well. Now that winegrower is used in production, we will add a dedicated section on the website (a blog post is in preparation to explain winegrower). We are increasing our partnership with other Apache projects, especially Apache Camel to help on the camel-karaf project (cleanup, refactoring, improvements). Regarding ServiceMix, we are still in the process to move ServiceMix parts to Karaf, but due to other activities, we have postponed a bit.

We had 80 people registered and around 50 people during the meetup. We can say the event has been a success. Three talks were given: - Karaf on the cloud (JB Onofré, Apache) - Karaf at Netflix (Dmitry Vasilyev, Netflix) - Karaf roadmap (open discussion) We saw lot of interest and enthusiasm about Apache Karaf. The meetup has been recorded and available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYXT5y8gwAg On the other hand, resulting to the discussion with the community and during the meetup (and after), a new PoC has started about Karaf: Karaf DevX. The purpose is to provide a way better developer experience with Karaf. DevX PoC started and we will communicate on the mailing list as soon as we have something "showable" to the community. About the release front, Apache Karaf Decanter 2.4.0 has been released with new collectors (ConfigAdmin, OSHI, ...), new layer named processors (allowing to perform any processing between collectors and appenders, for instance aggregation), and some fixes. About Apache Karaf runtime, 4.2.9 will be submitted to release soon, especially to fix issue with the shell. Karaf 4.3.0.RC2 is also in preparation as new step to 4.3.0 GA release. ## Community Health: As we thought, Apache Karaf Meetup has been very interesting and a great opportunity to promote the project and the community. We already planned a second meetup around the end of this year. We postponed the move of ServiceMix Bundles and Specs to Apache Karaf as some bundles were required by third party projects (like Camel). The formal communication (with CFP) will be sent soon (this week) and we will plan to ask "support" to ASF com. In term of releases and "pure" project activity, we released Apache Karaf 4.3.0.RC1 with a almost full support for OSGi R7. It's an important milestone for the project as it heads to the next major release (4.3.0). We also released 4.2.8 and 3.0.10 maintenance releases to sustain our release cycle. Karaf 4.2.9 will be submitted to vote soon as well. We also started a redesign of the Karaf tooling (maven plugins, etc) to propose a much better developer experience. We had several feedbacks saying that Apache Karaf is great once running, but the developer ramp up and developer experience could be much better. That's why we started to work on this area. About the subprojects, Apache Karaf Cave 4.2.1 has been released, containing a complete refactoring of Cave, now more multipurpose repository focused. We are also preparing Apache Karaf Decanter 2.3.0 as maintenance release with lot of improvements and bug fixes. Finally, a complete Apache Karaf Cellar refactoring has started, heading to new major Cellar release. - "Large Apache Karaf cluster with Karaf Cellar and Mesos" talk has been given
during ApacheCon NA '17 Miami. We noticed important interest during the talk
and we got lot of questions and feedbacks from users.

- An important work is in progress on the documentation (mostly dev guide with

- Apache Karaf provides a very modern and polymorphic container,
multi-purpose (microservices, OSGi, etc) powered by OSGi.
## Issues:
- As requested by the board, the Karaf PMC members decided to provide this
new report to address board comments and questions. We want to apologize a
new time for the delay to address those comments.
## Activity:
- We are maintaining our pace in the release. The next major release is
4.1.0 on which we are working. This release will contain lot of feedback
and contributions from the users.
- We also continue to improve the Karaf subprojects, especially Karaf
Decanter and Karaf Cellar. They both received important contributions from
users.
- We started a discussion on the dev mailing list about a new feature: Karaf
Boot. The purpose is to simplify writing applications running on Karaf and
provide easy way to package applications and Karaf all together. Due to
the releases activity, the discussion was in stand-by, but we plan to
restart the discussion and move forward about this.
- We are beginning the work for a full JDK9 support, we expect to achieve
the result in release 4.2.0
## Health report:
Apache Karaf has been receiving issue reports, patch submissions from down
stream projects such as OpenHab and OpenDaylight.
These projects use Apache Karaf as their runtime environment, their
contributions upstream to Karaf help strengthen and grow our broader
community.
It's also interesting to see that Karaf received contributions from other
Apache community, like Apache Unomi.
Last month we quickly reacted to a CVE security request that we already
fixed in last 4.0.8 release.
We are still watching for new potential committers and PMCs, extending our
dev community.
Talks related to Karaf (directly or indirectly) were present during
ApacheCon EU, promoting the project.
We also received new requests and feedback from new users (on the mailing
list and/or Jira) showing a healthy user community.
We are trying to be active on related projects (Apache Felix, enRoute, ...)
to increase the Karaf adoption and grow the user community.

Development =========== No releases this month so far, but development continues towards our next point release of Karaf, with attention coming from users testing new features and suggesting improvements. Since the last July report, Apache Karaf 2.0.0 has been released. Several patches have been supplied by contributors, but due to the holiday season, development has slowed down a bit during the past weeks.
The report was inadequate.
It has been only a few weeks since the Karaf TLP has been established, but the activity level is very high. All resources have been set up by infra (thx) and we have moved the opened JIRA issues and svn tree from Felix to Karaf. We've already received some patches from non developers, so I expect the community to grow very soon. We haven't released anything yet, and we're waiting for trunk to stabilize before releasing a 2.0 (new major version due to package renaming).
