Knox

21 Feb 2024 [Larry McCay / Shane]

## Description:
The mission of Knox is the creation and maintenance of software related to
Simplify and normalize the deployment and implementation of secure Hadoop
clusters

## Project Status:
Current project status: The Apache Knox project is ongoing and healthy even
if mature. We continue to have new features described in Knox Improvement
Proposals (KIPs) which provide a one-pager view of a proposal and facilitates
discussion.
Issues for the board: Nothing needing to be addressed by the board at this time.

## Membership Data:
Apache Knox was founded 2014-02-18 (10 years ago)
There are currently 24 committers and 20 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is 6:5.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Marton Balázs on 2022-11-27.
- No new committers. Last addition was Marton Balázs on 2022-11-28.

## Project Activity:
The last release for Apache Knox was release on 02/27/2023 as 2.0.0.
We continue to mature the project with more improvements to the Admin UI and
and user experience. We have started to cleanup the codebase to remove unused
and/or tech debt that requires changes to be made across multiple plugins
even though no one is using them. We have begun working on usecases that are
more targeted towards kubernetes and istio based deployments as well. Dpendency
management for CVEs are an ongoing effort.

## Community Health:
dev@knox.apache.org had a 4% increase in traffic in the past quarter
(430 emails compared to 410)
4 issues opened in JIRA, past quarter (-89% change)
4 issues closed in JIRA, past quarter (-87% change)
14 commits in the past quarter (-57% change)
4 code contributors in the past quarter (no change)
20 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (-39% change)
15 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (-54% change)

The health related metrics above show a downturn but given the relative
maturity of the project and the holidays during the quarter the actual numbers
involved are quite reasonable.

## Project Status:
Current project status:Work over the last quarter has primarily been focused
on bug fixes and minor improvements. Planning for a 2.1.0 release will begin
shortly in order to determine what fixes and features will be required.
Issues for the board: none.

- No new committers. Last addition was Marton Balázs on 2022-11-28.

## Project Activity:
A milestone release of 2.0.0 was released in 2/2023. We will begin planning
for a 2.1.0 release shortly. This release will be comprised of bug and
security fixes and potentially new features which will be discussed in email
and possibly via KIP wiki pages for one-pager design documents.

## Community Health:
The following metrics reflect the status of a mature project within a period
of bug fixes and minor improvements. It will pickup with the planning and
execution of a 2.1.0 release as we determine the larger features to include.

38 issues opened in JIRA, past quarter (-2% change)
31 issues closed in JIRA,past quarter (-6% change)
32 commits in the past quarter (18% increase)
4 code contributors in the past quarter (-42% change)

## Description:
The mission of Knox is the creation and maintenance of software related to
Simplify and normalize the deployment and implementation of secure Hadoop
clusters

## Project Status:
Current project status: Project status is currently good. We will likely begin
discussion for a 2.1.0 release soon. This project is in an ongoing state with
moderate activity with the majority of the activity on mailing lists being
from PR and github integration for reviews, commentary and commits.

Issues for the board: none

## Membership Data:
Apache Knox was founded 2014-02-18 (9 years ago)
There are currently 24 committers and 20 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is 6:5.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Marton Balázs on 2022-11-27.
- No new committers. Last addition was Marton Balázs on 2022-11-28.

## Project Activity:
2.0.0 was released on 2023-02-27 - this was a milestone release with multiple
new features and a transition to log4j 2.x. We continue to work towards our
goals for SSO and API authentication and federation interactions for the big
data ecosystem.

## Community Health:
dev@knox.apache.org had a 5% increase in traffic in the past quarter (333
emails compared to 316) user@knox.apache.org had a 92% decrease in traffic in
the past quarter (1 emails compared to 12) 39 issues opened in JIRA, past
quarter (44% increase) 33 issues closed in JIRA, past quarter (73% increase)
27 commits in the past quarter (12% increase) 7 code contributors in the past
quarter (40% increase) 27 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (8% increase) 22
PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (22% increase)

The increase in dev is related to github integration with PRs and with
dependabot related dependency upgrades while the decrease on the user list is
not a significant change given that it is normally low.

We continue to see additional contributors and interest in the project through
github and are tracking the opening and closing of JIRAs in a healthy manner.

## Project Activity:
2.0.0 was released on 2023-02-27
This release introduced some changes due to the upgrade of log4j
and related compatibility issues. It also introduced our WebShell
feature that allows for terminal access from the browser via the Knox
homepage. The project continues to be healthy and planning for the next
release and related features will start shortly.

## Community Health:
dev@knox.apache.org had a 61% decrease in traffic in the
past quarter (315 emails compared to 797)
user@knox.apache.org had a 500% increase in traffic in the
past quarter (12 emails compared to 2)
27 issues opened in JIRA, past quarter (-37% change)
19 issues closed in JIRA, past quarter (-53% change)
24 commits in the past quarter (-70% change)
5 code contributors in the past quarter (-50% change)
25 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (-59% change)
18 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (-77% change)

The prior quarter's metrics are higher due to the activity
for the 2.0.0 release that landed 2023-02-27. Much of the dev@ list
email traffic is PR related and the decrease there is also related
to the previous quarter's activity for 2.0.0.

- Marton Balázs was added as committer on 2022-11-28

## Project Activity:
The project has an active VOTE for a milestone 2.0.0 release.
We are currently voting on RC1 though it seems we likely need
an RC2 in order to fix some issues found during testing. This
is a first release for PMC Member, Phil Zampino, as the Release Manager.
Engagement from the community seems stable and ongoing.

## Community Health:
dev@knox.apache.org had a 29% decrease in traffic in the past quarter
(544 emails compared to 759)
user@knox.apache.org had a 56% increase in traffic in the past quarter

10 code contributors in the past quarter (66% increase)
57 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (5% increase)
79 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (125% increase)

Increases in number of contributors, PRs opened and closed show
the projects engagement with the community as stable while the large
increase in closed PRs speaks to the large number of CVE issues with
dependencies being resolved. Many of which are coming from dependabot.

We have had numerous contributions from a community member that we
will start discussion around making a committer within the next few days.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Attila Magyar on 2021-12-12.
- No new committers. Last addition was Attila Magyar on 2021-12-13.

## Project Activity:
The Knox community has begun talking about a 2.0.0 release for November.
Since there are a couple incompatible changes due to Log4J migration,
a major release seems appropriate. Knox 2.0.0 will also include a WebShell
feature that allows an interactive terminal shell from a browser for
access to resources within the cluster for cli, logs, etc.

## Community Health:
It seems some dev traffic has lessened but that is likely due to fewer
jenkins build failure emails.

50 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (13% increase)
35 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (-20% change)

Dependabot likely increasing the PRs here with automated creation of
PRs for dependencies with CVEs.

Overall, the project is pretty mature but still adding large features,
maintaining healthy dependency hygiene and moving toward a new release.

## Project Activity:
1.6.1 was release in January to address a couple security related
issues. A new branch was created for a 2.0.0 release where the
migration to log4j 2.x is planned. See KNOX-1462.

We have had a number of new community members contribute patches
recently and look forward to addition contributions from them!

We continue to discuss new features on the email lists and have
determined that a KIP one-pager should be written to propose a
feature to enable Sign in with Ethereum (SIWE) as part of KnoxSSO.
This will likely target the 2.0.0 or maybe a 2.0.1 release.

We will begin to discuss timing and content for a 1.6.2 release in
coming days.

## Community Health:
Community health related metrics are showing a bit of an uptick
in mailing list traffic and closed PRs. We have committed a couple
contributions from new community members. New feature development
should drive these metrics and renewed community interest as we look
toward emerging identity related features and usecases.

## Project Activity:
1.6.1 was released on 2022/01/12
This was a security patch release with fixes related to log4j and
a minor url parsing error. We have plans to move to log4j 2.x line
and an Apache Knox 2.0.0 release due to the incompatibility that
refactoring presents. We will continue to maintain the 1.6.x line
with security and bug fixes as appropriate.

## Community Health:
The community interactions continue to reflect a mature project
and fewer features rather than small improvements and fixes. We
will be pursuing interesting new SSO services and cloud native
usecases in coming releases which should increase traffic and
community involvement. We also have a feature that still requires
additional security review and scrutiny in a feature branch.

## Project Activity:
Apache Knox 1.6.1 was released 01/12/2022.
This release contained a fix for a security vulnerability reported through
the Apache Security list. Prior to that 1.6.0 was released 11/04/2021. We have
branched for a 2.0.0 line in order to switch to log4j-2.x and accommodate the
necessary backward incompatible changes on a new release line. This migration
is still in discussion given recent issues. We have also created a feature
that is targeted to be merged to the 2.0.0 line upon full review of a new large
feature that requires detailed security review. We have continued our use of
KIP one-pagers for new features and design discussions which work well.

## Community Health:
The following metrics more than likely represent a decrease in activity around
the holiday season more than anything else. A new committer/PMC member was added
this quarter.

dev@knox.apache.org had a 29% decrease in traffic in the past

## Project Activity:
Apache Knox 1.6.0 was released on 11/04/2021 after a discussion on dev list
to likely make this the last 1.x.0 release. We will be targeting a 2.0
release with some non-backward compatible changes including an upgrade of
log4j.

We are also tracking a community contributor as an emerging committer/PMC
member. In fact, his contribution to log4j upgrade is part of the plan for
2.0.

## Community Health:
dev@knox.apache.org had a 64% increase in traffic in the past quarter
(835 emails compared to 507)
user@knox.apache.org had a 1700% increase in traffic in the past quarter
(36 emails compared to 2)

8 code contributors in the past quarter (33% increase)
34 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (no change)
34 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (9% increase)

The above increases in activity reflect the work around getting the 1.6.0
release out and the seemingly mature state of the project in terms of new
features. 2.0 will hopefully concentrate more on cloud specific features
which will introduce some new innovation and types of features.

## Project Activity:
Interesting feature in development will provide a browser based access
to a secure shell. This will allow for the use of KnoxSSO to establish
a terminal session on the host running Apache Knox. This is a desirable
feature for cloud scenarios. This feature is still in development and
is being contributed by a new community member. Other notable features
are centered around the use of KnoxTokens (JWT and Passcode) rather than
username and passwords. Like the work for secure shell access, KnoxSSO
is used to access a facility to generate and manage user specific tokens.
These tokens may then be used as bearer tokens or as a password for clients
that only accommodate HTTP Basic authentication. Again, these features are
desirable in cloud deployments where the potential of having to manage separate
username and password credentials from enterprise credentials is not desirable.
We need to start discussion for a new release to rollout some subset of the
above features in the coming weeks.

## Community Health:
While the project has started to mature and slow on release cycles, we have
managed to attract contributions from new community members. We are entering a
new phase of the project's lifecycle with a focus on cloud deployment scenarios,
enabling token based authentication for the services that we proxy and serve.
This will likely result in more activity in coming quarters, especially once
the next release ships. Some of the decrease in traffic on the email lists is
due to less spam from infra issues with jenkins job failures, etc. Filed JIRAs
and PRs seem to be tracking and getting resolved well.

dev@knox.apache.org had a 28% decrease in traffic in the past quarter

## Description:
The mission of Apache Knox is the creation and maintenance of software related
to simplifying and normalizing the deployment and implementation of secure
Hadoop clusters. Knox accomplishes this through a combination of an HTTP
gateway for proxying Hadoop and its ecosystem resources, SSO capabilities for
UI access and support for token exchange patterns for integration usecases.

## Project Activity:
1.5.0 was released 2020-12-06
It is likely that a 1.5.1 release for a regression in OpenID Connect support
will be spun soon, if not a 1.6.0. Community reporting of both the regression
and the solution was contributed via JIRA. A
large portion of the focus in the project over the last quarter has been
on the creation of a UI for acquiring tokens for integration usecases with
both JWT and new access tokens called Passcode tokens.

## Community Health:
dev@knox.apache.org had a 17% increase in traffic in the past quarter (805

## Community Health
Metrics are lower again this quarter as team work conditions amid COVID
and other priorities are affecting engagement. At the same time,
the project seems to have matured to where new features are fewer.
More innovation seems to be possible in the near future as more cloud specific
features seem likely.

## Project Activity:
* 1.4.0 was released on 2020-04-26
* Focus was on the KnoxShell client functionality with features for the
interactive shell that enable JDBC and HTTP/REST access to tabular data
through Knox - presenting it in a dataframe like object for continued
manipulation and aggregation.

## Community Health:
I believe decrease in email list traffic and other metrics are due to a number
of root causes. While it has been considerably less than last quarter,
the fact that the last release introduced a brand new area of concentration
inflated the amount of bootstrapping issues, commits and related emails.
A large number of dependency upgrades and other hygiene related work was done
for the last release as well. This quarter has not had a release focus though we
likely have a enough bug fixes for a maintenance release. The planning for the
next feature bearing release will begin shortly - with continued focus on cloud
and client interactions with cloud deployments from KnoxShell.

simplify and normalize the deployment and implementation of secure Hadoop
  clusters.

## Issues:
 - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time

## Membership Data:
Apache Knox was founded 2014-02-18 (6 years ago)
There are currently 22 committers and 18 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 6:5.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Sandor Molnar on 2019-11-20.
- No new committers. Last addition was Sandor Molnar on 2019-11-21.

## Project Activity:
- Apache Knox 1.4.0 was released in April with nearly 400 fixes, upgrades and
  improvements.
- Planning for the 1.5.0 release will begin with the backlog of JIRAs and
  discussion around cloud usecases.
- We continue to use the KIP-xxx one-pager for proposing sizeable efforts

## Community Health:
- Activity in JIRA and email lists seems to continue to grow or remain inline
with previous levels. A 7% increase in code contributors seems to be a healthy
sign. Community Health Score of: 7.96 (Healthy)

## Project Activity:
- Planning for the Apache Knox 1.4.0 release has begun and continues with the
approach of using KIPs to communicate larger design and feature changes and
  goals.
- This release has been in the works for longer than anticipated but will land
  within a matter of weeks.
- We plan to concentrate on the client library and shell for interacting with
remote Knox instances/Hadoop clusters and Cloudera Manager based service
  discovery.
- 1.3.0 was released on 2019-07-23.
- 1.2.0 was released on 2018-12-18.

## Community Health:
There does seem to be an uptick in use of Apache Knox in Hadoop and other big
data deployments across the industry. We have received contributions from new
contributors with varying sizes and level of impact. Pull requests are a
relatively new mechanism for the Knox community which explains the large
increase over previous quarters.

The large increase in email traffic on the dev list is likely a result of
additional traffic from github PR activity and commits.

- dev@knox.apache.org had a 21% increase in traffic in the past quarter (2194
  emails compared to 1813):
- user@knox.apache.org had a 32% decrease in traffic in the past quarter (24

## Description:
 - The Apache Knox Gateway is an HTTP/REST API Gateway for interacting with
Apache Hadoop clusters. The Knox Gateway provides a single access point for
all REST/HTTP interactions with Apache Hadoop clusters.

## Issues:
 - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time

## Activity:
 - Knox continues to leverage the KIP approach to communicate designs and
proposals but has also integrated Github Pull Requests. The 1.3.0 release
was proposed as mid April and we will start the close down in the next week
   or so.
 - There are a number of new contributors that are emerging as possible
committer/PMC candidates and we will consider invitations over the next
   quarter or so.

## Health report:
 - Mail and commits continue to be at a good level. There were previously
inflated email counts due to jenkins job failures as indicated in previous
reports. These seem to be fewer - presumably due to the use of PRs instead
   of patches on JIRA.

 - We have recently migrated to gitbox and agreed to start supporting Pull
   Requests from github
 - We have begun discussing the planning for the 1.3.0 release with a focus so
   far on containerization and cloud.

## Activity:
 - In July Apache Knox 1.1.0 was released. This marked the largest release so

due to concentration on other useability and management features.
 - We have identified the need for a quick 1.2.0 release to focus on some

## Description:
 - The Apache Knox Gateway is an Application Gateway for interacting with the
REST APIs and UIs of Apache Hadoop deployments. The Knox Gateway provides a
single access point for all REST and HTTP interactions with Apache Hadoop
clusters. Knox delivers three groups of user facing services: Proxying,
   Authentication and Client Services

## Issues:
 - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time

## Activity:
 - The Apache Knox team completed the release of Apache Knox 0.14.0 and
followed up with our 1.0.0 release which was largely the same as 0.14.0 but
it included a repackaging of all of our class package names to remove
"hadoop" from the name. This allows downstream consumers to take on new
features in 0.14.0 without being forced to move to new package names in case
of incompatibilities. We have a backlog of JIRAs for 1.1.0 but will also
begin our feature planning through the use of KIP-# wiki pages to identify
larger features and themes for the release.

## Health report:
 - We have continued to use the KIP-# pages to drive the primary focus of each
release and feel it is working well. The 0.14.0 release was primarily
focused on the addition of the service discovery and simplified descriptors
(KIP-8) to improve and simplify management of topologies. It also includes
many improvements and bug fixes. It took a bit longer than anticipated due to
issues found during the VOTE with community testing. The Dec 14 2017 release
date allowed for the primary focus for 0.14.0 to be more rounded out and a
better quality release to roll into our 1.0.0 milestone in early Feb 2018.
 - Community contributions continue to show growth and growing interest and is
   encouraging.

## Activity

The Apache Knox team is in the process of an active VOTE for our 0.13.0 release.
While we were going to also try and make this our 1.0.0 release there were a
couple reasons to delay this milestone. We discovered a couple issues
that required a good bit of investigation and will require rigorous testing from
the community before they can be considered properly complete and ready. We also
took a good bit of time to try and pull in contributions from the community that
many users have been looking for. Most notably in the service definitions for proxying UIs.

We have continued to use the KIP-# pages to drive the primary focus of each

# Status
The Apache Knox team released 0.12.0 was release on Mar 20th with some great
enhancements and new features, some of the highlights are:
 * Proxy support for Solr UI and API
 * Proxy support for Gremlin REST API
 * KnoxToken API for acquiring a Knox Access Token
 * Proxy support for Zeppelin UI through Knox
 * New release module for KnoxShell
 * YARN RM HA implementation for REST API and UI
 * Support for pluggable validator for Header pre authentication provider

We have continued to use the KIP-# pages to drive the primary focus of each
release and feel it is working well. The 0.12.0 release was primarily
focused on the client library and programming model for consuming REST APIs
through Knox. There had been an increasing uptake of this library and it had
become clear that it needed to mature.

We have begun discussing what needs to land in 0.13.0 and what the strategy
is for a 1.0.0 release in this timeframe. KIPs have been created for security
improvements, port-mapping for simplified URLs and refactoring for package
renaming.

The current level of collaboration is healthy and encouraging within the
community on both mailing lists and JIRAs.

in 0.12.0 as the number JIRAs has pushed the date out beyond our target and we
want to be able to maintain our release cadence but not at the expense of
addressing our goals. The current level of collaboration is healthy and
encouraging within the community on both mailing lists and JIRAs.

# Description
The Apache Knox Gateway is a REST API Gateway for interacting with Apache
Hadoop clusters. The Knox Gateway provides a single access point for all
REST/HTTP interactions with Apache Hadoop clusters.

# Issues

# Status
The Apache Knox team has just wrapped up the 0.10.0 release with a number of
contributions from the community. We missed our target for the release by over
a month. This was due to activity in the community, discussion in how to go
about testing certain contributions to determine whether goals were actually
met, etc. We've begun using wiki as a means to describe Knox Improvement
Proposals (KIPs). These are "one-pagers" that capture a particular vision for
improvement in certain areas. They should help illustrate the roadmap for the
related feature areas and map those visions to JIRAs. This helps give focus to
the releases and should also help contributors see how active JIRAs map into
the roadmap and vision.

# Releases
* 0.10.0: 2016-11-07 Added PAM support, LDAP paging, Websocket support and
fixed a number of bugs - through ~25 commits.

# Development Activity
* Community is discussing the planning of the 0.11.0 release which will continue
to use the KIPs to drive the release themes

# Status
Actively working on maintaining a release cadence to deliver bug fixes as well
as new features in as timely a manner as possible. Most recent release missed
our target of middle June due to community testing efforts and filed JIRAs
which was great to see. Three new contributors provided patches, testing and
JIRAs. We have a number of new JIRAs already targeted for the 0.10.0 release
around LDAP improvements which will likely be a central theme to that release.

The community has voted to change PMC chair as has been communicated separately
via email of the resolution.

# Description
The Knox Gateway is a REST API gateway for securing Hadoop REST APIs at the
perimeter. We are starting to move into the UI proxy and UI SSO space as well.

# Issues
* This quarter has seen discusson on dev@knox from a single individual
expressing concern reguarding the project's development practices. See:
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/knox-dev/201512.mbox/%3CCAD-Ua_ibfetwjD2Mx1rOhXzc1y0h6b4PaXZThuByuRKp9oh29g@mail.gmail.com%3E

These issues were discussed and as a result the communities existing
CTR vs RTC practices were refined, clarified and the site contribution process
documentation updated. I believe this was a beneficial discussion.

# Status
* We did two releases this quarter which is a first.
* More importantly the 0.8.0 release is the first hilighting a non-committer
contributed feature as its primary release driver.
* The 0.7.0 release also however did include a significantly increased
amount of non-committer contributed content over prior releases.
* Starting work for a 0.9.0 release. We may consider this for our 1.0 release.

acabrera: Nice active podling. It's already done a release. I'm not sure
why they haven't started discussing graduation but I would support such a
 move.

There seems to be a few security oriented software named Knox. There may be
a naming problem here, unless the product was consistently named Knox
Gateway and not Knox; just my opinion.
