## Description: The mission of MINA is the creation and maintenance of software related to Multipurpose Infrastructure for Network Application ## Project Status: Current project status: ongoing Issues for the board: Last report comment indicated two non-pmc members subscribed to the private list, but wrongly assumed they were committers. Those are committers on other projects (james and directory) which have strong historical ties with Mina. They should be unsubscribed. Should we raise an infra issue to do that ? ## Membership Data: Apache MINA was founded 2006-10-25 (17 years ago) There are currently 29 committers and 15 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 2:1. Community changes, past quarter: - Gary D. Gregory was added to the PMC on 2023-09-13 - No new committers. Last addition was Gary D. Those 3 releases are bug-fix releases on maintained branches. Subprojects: * Mina Core is in maintenance mode with regular releases * Mina AsyncWeb is mainly dormant (there has been a few javadoc related commits in 03/2023, the previous commit was from 10/2012) * Mina FTPserver has received a few minor code cleanup related commits in the past months * Mina SSHD is under development preparing a 2.11.0 release with a few new features this month (the previous 2.10.0 was released in 05/2023) * Mina Vysper has received a few minor code / javadoc cleanup related commits in the past months ## Community Health: Not much to report here: despite the low activity, the community is still healthy.

Gregory on 2022-03-24. ## Project Activity: Apache MINA SSHD 2.9.2 was released on 2022-11-09. No new development happening, the project is mainly in active maintenance mode, mostly on SSHD, a bit on Mina Core (3 commits in the last quarter) and not much on the two other subprojects as the last commits were in April 2022 for FtpServer and January 2021 for Vysper. ## Community Health: The activity is lowering. It mainly consists in one committer actively maintaining SSHD with the help of the broader user community that open issues and PRs in Jira or GitHub. Not a problem yet, as releases are still done from time to time.

## Description: Apache MINA is a network application framework which helps users develop high performance and high scalability network applications easily. ## Issues: None ## Activity: Mina SSHD 2.0.0 was released this quarter, the switch to a new major version was mainly driven by the split into several smaller modules, which required some refactoring and incompatibilities. MINA 2.0.18 was released but post-release feedback lead to discover some incompatibilities, so a 2.0.19 was quickly released to fix those. PMC has started discussions about moving FtpServer and Vysper to the Attic. The SSHD 2.0.0 took quite some time to release and there were some discussion about delaying for further refactoring, but those were abandoned because of the lack of consensus. ## Health Both Mina SSHD and Mina Core subprojects have only two active committers (different committers though). The SSHD subproject has external contributions so we may have new committers in the future. General & Release ----------------- The first MINA 2 RC was released lot of bugs was fixed, an RC2 or a GA is imminent. Technical discussions started about a 3.0 rewrite with a few code drop in a branch. A 0.3.0 release of SSHD was done. From Vysper a new module for on stream XML decoding emerged. Will be a basic brick for all the XML based network protocols (like XMPP). We have some new activity on the AHC (Async Http Client) let's hope for a release. Community --------- No new committer since October. Ashish Paliwal just have been elected as PMC member. The chair rotation is under vote. Some stats : Number of subscribers on the dev list : 368 (was 373 in october) Number of subscribers on the users list : 336 (was 314 in october)
October Report ------------ General & Release ----------------- The first MINA 2 RC is under vote and is going to be released in the next days. Most of all the remaining bug was squeezed. September was very quiet, let's hope the new release generate more activity, specially the probable start of a 3.0 experimental branch. FtpServer released 1.0.3 a bug fix release. SSHD made its second release the 0.2.0. Vysper after a lot of activity during the summer is now suffering the September syndrome. Asyncweb is still asleep. Community --------- No new committer since July. Some stats Number of subscribers on the dev list : 373 Number of subscribers on the users list : 314 We broke the number of downloads per month last July : around 40 000, around 1300 a day.
* General & Release Another MINA bug fix release was done (2.0.0-M6). The current goal is to produce an RC release, trying to squeeze all the remaining issues, while starting to produce a wish list for 3.0. Look like the MINA developers are actually quite busy on other subjects, so it's not moving very fast. FtpServer released 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 two bug fix releases. SSHD made its first release the 0.1.0 ! The project is still maturing and the APIs are not to be considered stable. Vysper is growing fast and discussions are conducted for moving it out of the sandbox. A vote is about to be started. * Community Two new committers : Michael Jakl (focused on Vysper) and Shawn Pearce (focused of SSHD) was voted in. Benrd Fondermann and Guillaume Nodet was added to the PMC.
General MINA is slowly going from Milestone to RC cycle, with a emphasis on documentation and website. We had lot of feedback and bug reports on the last 2.0.0-M4 release, with some serious bug fixed, so releasing an intermediate 2.0.0-M5 was voted. Normally the last one before the 2.0.0-RC1. FtpServer is in the early stages of planning for the 1.1 work which will include some new major features. In general, the project gets a fair amount of user feedback so the community seems to be growing. The new SSHD project is actively developed a first release is still to be expected. Release FtpServer : release of FtpServer 1.0 after the RC cycle A 2.0.0-M5 release for MINA is to be released in the next days, the main effort is on the documentation, a RC1 is to expect soon as critical bugs were fixed. Community Sai Pullabhotla was voted as new committer, mainly focused on FtpServer. After few month of cool down, the activity is coming back in commit and mailing list activity. Vysper a XMPP (Jabber) server based on MINA, which is currently developed at Apache labs is willing to join MINA as a subproject (as FtpServer and Asyncweb). This idea received a warm welcome of the MINA community.
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors heretofore appointed Peter Royal to the office of Vice President, Apache MINA, and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors is in receipt of the resignation of Peter Royal from the office of Vice President, Apache MINA, and WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache MINA project has chosen by vote to recommend Julien Vermillard as the successor to the post; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Peter Royal is relieved and discharged from the duties and responsibilities of the office of Vice President, Apache MINA, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Julien Vermillard be and hereby is appointed to the office of Vice President, Apache MINA, to serve in accordance with and subject to the direction of the Board of Directors and the Bylaws of the Foundation until death, resignation, retirement, removal or disqualification, or until a successor is appointed. Special Order 7A, appoint Julien Vermillard as Apache MINA chairman, was approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.
It has been a good quarter for MINA. The project is continuing to see activity and progress. Acivity on the mailing lists is continuing to come from an increasingly diverse crowd. We have added three new committers, Ashish Paliwal, David Latorre and Guillaume Nodet. The long road towards MINA 2.0 is coming to a close with a 2.0M4 release which signaled a code-freeze towards 2.0-final Our FTPServer sub-project just released their first 1.0 release candidate. We also added a new sub-project that aims to produce a SSHd implementation. Finally, I am stepping down as PMC chair. The PMC has voted to recommend Julien Vermillard as my successor.
MINA-land has been mostly-calm. We have added one new committer, Edouard De Oliveira. We re-organized our website some for usability's sake. Release-wise, we have put out two milestone releases towards MINA 2.0, M2 and M3. We hope to release a M4 by the end of the year. Development has been progressing more slowly (as expected) since Trustin's departure. On our FtpServer subproject, from Niklas Gustavsson: "In FtpServer land we've done two releases since the last report, 1.0-M2 and 1.0-M3. And we're well on the way to 1.0-M4 which is expected to be the last milestone before the end game to 1.0. Development has been ongoing and community involvement is greatly improving, however we still need more active commiters on the code."
This has been a tumultuous quarter for MINA. One of our longtime developers and project co-founders, Trustin Lee, has decided to leave the project. He will be sorely missed. Trustin was a prolific contributor, and it remains to be seen how the project will adapt to his departure. Other contributors have been stepping up, which is a healthy sign. It has been a wakeup-call of sorts to the community to realize how much we were depending upon a single individual, and this may be the painful lesson that ultimately leads to greater diversity. We have continued to provide updated versions of our released software MINA 1.0.10 and 1.1.7. Development continues towards a 2.0 release, with a second milestone release just last week. The focus has been on helping others understand the codebase, and to those ends, we have been working on documntation and clarifying refactorings. Our FtpServer sub-project has also been under active development, but no releases. PMC / Committer changes: * Trustin Lee resigned from the PMC * Peter Royal succeeds Trustin as PMC chair * Edouard De Oliveira and Rich Dougherty added as committers * Mark Webb and Maarten Bosteels joined the PMC
The board is pleased with the way Peter approached the topic of Trustin's departure.
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors heretofore appointed Trustin Lee to the office of Vice President, Apache MINA Project, and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors is in receipt of the resignation of Trustin Lee from the office of Vice President, Apache MINA Project; WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache MINA project has chosen by vote to recommend Peter Royal as the successor to the post; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Trustin Lee is relieved and discharged from the duties and responsibilities of the office of Vice President, Apache MINA Project, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Peter Royal be and hereby is appointed to the office of Vice President, Apache MINA Project, to serve in accordance with and subject to the direction of the Board of Directors and the Bylaws of the Foundation until death, resignation, retirement, removal or disqualification, or until a successor is appointed. Special Order 7B, Change the Apache MINA Project Chair, was approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.
Releases ======== We released two backward-compatible minor bug fix releases - MINA 1.0.9 and 1.1.6. Most importantly, MINA 2.0.0-M1 has been release after long long development. Community ========= We have set up two subprojects; FtpServer and AsyncWeb. The dedicated mailing list for FtpServer users has been created. AsyncWeb currently has two implementations for the client side HTTP. One is from Geronimo contributors and the other is from MINA contributors. Both contributors have agreed to merge the two implementations into one. As a result of the effort to accelerate the merger, Sangjin Lee and Rick McGuire joined the MINA team. MINA project itself also has set up the dedicated mailing list for MINA users due to increasing number of questions and answers in the developer list. On the other hand, we are seeing a few important incoming contribution such as Scala binding (Rich Dougherty) and proxy support (James Furness and Edouard De Oliveira). They are good candidates as MINA team members and we are going to keep our eyes on them and their contribution. Noteworthy Features =================== We have moved immature traffic shaping/throttling feature from the trunk to the sandbox not to deliver broken implementation. It shouldn't hurt MINA itself because traffic shaping/throttling can be always done in most modern operating systems (aka QoS support.) Issues ====== Both AsyncWeb and FtpServer need to integrate their web site into its parent site. It's purely a matter of time and effort, so I believe it will be resolved this quarter. Except that, I don't see any issue that requires the board's attention.
Releases ======== We cut four minor releases: 1.0.7, 1.0.8, 1.1.4 and 1.1.5. The new releases contain backward-compatible minor improvements and bug fixes. Community ========= FtpServer project has been graduated from the Incubator into the MINA project. It is in progress to merge the two web sites into one seamlessly, and other infrastructure-related changes are being discussed. Niklas Gustavsson joined the MINA PMC as the lead of the FtpServer project. Jeff Genender, a member of the foundation and a MINA enthusiast, joined the MINA PMC. His primary focus is to implement high performance asynchronous HTTP client implementation, along with HTTP server implementation. These client-server implementations are not a stand-alone application but a library on top of the MINA framework, so it will be the best fit together. There was a serious discussion about changing logging framework of MINA 2 in the mailing list, and we concluded to stick to the current logging framework (i.e. SLF4J). Instead, Trustin Lee will provide a tool that converts a JAR which depends on a logging framework A into a new JAR which depends on a logging framework B. Maarten Bosteels is also working with SLF4J team to make it more friendly with more logging frameworks such as java.util.logging, which will simplify MINA logging significantly. The bottom line is that we will be able to resolve every community member's concern with MINA 2 hopefully. The community itself seems to be growing up and up steadily. Please refer to the markmail.org traffic graph: http://mina.markmail.org/ We are seeing decreased traffic on December 2007, but it's probably due to holidays. Features ======== Julien Vermillard and Trustin Lee finished implementation of APR transport. This means MINA now can utilize ASF's high performance cross platform library for network operations. It seems to perform 10% better than the Sun epoll NIO provider. Switching from NIO to APR takes just a few minutes. JMX integration has been rewritten, which means all MINA-based applications are manageable via JMX very easily. Synchronous reader API has been implemented. MINA is basically an asynchronous framework so some client developers will benefit from this new feature. The OSGi integration issue reported in the last report has been resolved. Issues ====== We need to finish migration of FtpServer and release MINA 2.0.0-M1 this quarter to catch up the users' demand. We might need more committers who has good will for keeping MINA project run.
Approved by General Consent.
Releases ======== We cut six new minor releases: 1.0.4, 1.0.5, 1.0.6, 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and 1.1.3. The new releases contain backward-compatible minor improvements and several bug fixes. We didn't announce the news for 1.0.6 and 1.1.3, but it's on the way. Community ========= Mike Heath, long time MINA committer, has shown his continuing contribution to the project, and has been promoted to be a PMC member. Maarten Bosteels, another long time community member and document contributor, has been added to our committer list. Niclas Hedman, the mentor of the FTPServer project in the Incubator, asked about the possibility of hosting the FTPServer project under MINA project. All PMC members expressed positive opinion, so we are going to start a vote for adopting the FTPServer project. As the MINA core itself becomes more and more mature, people started to ask about out-of-the-box protocol codecs for well-known protocols such as HTTP, FTP, SMTP and ISO 8583 which will potentially boost up server development in an order of magnitude. We agreed that AsyncWeb (received software grant), FTPServer (under incubation) and ISO 8583 (need to contact the existing community) are going to be a great addition to the project. Jeff Genender, the Geronimo committer and member, also donated HTTP client module for MINA. Of course, all these additions should occur in the manageable extent, and we believe we can. Due to the massive class renaming and refactoring, we are getting many questions about disappeared classes recently. It means much more people than we expected are using the development branch, and it can possibly lead to complaints of the users. Releasing 2.0.0-M1, the first milestone of the next generation of MINA, as soon as possible will remedy situation. Due to the high flexibility and generic API, users often find themselves difficulty in choosing the right way to implement a protocol codec. We need to improve documentation on this area to reduce the ratio of the questions in the mailing list. Our web site has been revamped to attractive more people. We also added a link to Nabble.com mailing list archive for those who are not used to the mailing list. Features ======== Julien Vermillard, our most active committer and PMC member, added preliminary support for APR transport. This means MINA now can utilize ASF's high-performance and cross-platform library for network operations. All the existing MINA applications will benefit from this thanks to the highly abstract nature of MINA API. Trustin Lee refactored the trunk massively to make implementing a new transport very easily. Julien's APR transport will be the first customer of this change. Thanks to this change, a lot of code duplication has been removed. Maarten Bosteels added MDC injection filter that helps to create more understandable communication logs. A brand new asynchronous HTTP client was contributed by Jeff Genender and integrated into MINA codebase by Mark Webb Issues ====== As OSGi framework becomes a buzzword in the market, people keeps asking about providing OSGi bundles for MINA artifacts. We've been relying on the Maven 2 plugin provided by the Felix project, but we dropped the support because it doesn't work pretty well with multi-project layout. We temporarily concluded to wait for the plugin to fix the bug. Logging framework, again, arose as an issue. Users seem to have difficulties configuring SLF4J, so we added a dedicated page for configuring SLF4J for MINA in our documentation section. Most PMC members agreed on moving Niklas's state machine module to the trunk. Strictly speaking, it doesn't depend on MINA core, but it is very clear that it is designed to work very well with MINA and protocol implementation.

Releases ======== We didn't release a new version yet while we are fixing reported bugs as soon as possible. Hopefully the new releases will be introduced at the end of July. Community ========= Mark Webb, enthusiastic document contributor, has been added to our committer list. He also showed his will to learn the MINA internals by writing documents and start to contribute the code eventually. So far, he's doing very well. We are also discussing about adding Maarten Bosteels. He has been an active answerer for many questions and a patch provider. The vote will start soon. People keep asking about the release schedule of the version 2.0, but we are not able to give any specific date because the project is fully volunteer-based. We are currently focusing on fixing issues in 1.x versions. Community contributors are keep posting patches such as blocking I/O support and FTP implementation example. Once reviewed, they will be selectively included to the mainstream. The patches for bugs are applied as soon as possible. To address very frequent questions about the performance of MINA, a web page dedicated to performance test reports has been created. As its first content, Trustin Lee added performance test report for HTTP server implementation, which shows an impressive result. There was a serious discussion about starting a new DNS library project. The authors of dnsjava and dnsjnio project showed interest. Currently the discussion is somewhat stalled because we are not sure if MINA has to host the project, because the Incubator or Labs is the more suitable place. Features ======== Julien Vermillard added serial port communication to MINA. This means any MINA application can communicate via a serial port with minimal (or no) code modification. He also started to work on APR transport for MINA, which might yield better performance to existing MINA-based applications with minimal (or no) code modification. Trustin Lee added an extension that eases the development of request-response style client application. Mark Webb added an extension that throttles the number of connection attempts within a certain amount time. Issues ====== Niklas Therning wrote a nice state machine library called 'MINA-SM'. Strictly speaking, it doesn't depend on MINA although it is designed to work very well with MINA and protocol implementation. We didn't discuss about where this project should be hosted yet.

Apache MINA is a Java network application framework, which enables rapid development of high-performance and high-quality network applications. Releases ======== There was no release this month, but vote for two new releases (1.0.3 and 1.1.0) are in progress. Apache MINA 1.0.3 is a bug fix release and 1.1.0 is a Java 5 port of 1.0.x. Community News ============== 7 more bugs has been reported and fixed since 1.0.2. We are still getting a a lot of questions especially about implementation of protocol codecs and performance tuning. I wrote the table of contents for the documentation to promote community contribution from users, and documentation contributors such as Mark Webb seem to be interested in helping fill the unwritten part. However, it's progressing very slowly, and we expect we will receive as many question as before meanwhile. MINA's datagram (UDP/IP) implementation didn't get much attention than socket (TCP/IP) implementation so far, but Greg Duffy, our community member, is showing his interest in revamping the datagram implementation for higher performance like the socket implementation fulfilled. It is great to have people who uses various transport types in the community, and it will lead us to more solid product. Issues ====== There's no critical community issue this month.

Apache MINA is a Java network application framework, which enables rapid development of high-performance and high-quality network applications. TLP Promotion =========== I can't think of any more things to do for TLP promotion. Please let us know if there's something needs to be done. Once considered finished, we will remove this section in the board report from next time. Releases ======= 1.0.2 has been released with 14 bug fixes and 3 improvements. We are currently releasing bi-monthly for now, though we haven't intended to do so. It seems like there's a natural rhythm in this project. :) Community News ============ As of release of version 1.0.2, the rate of bug report has been dropped down significantly. We are focusing on answering questions in the mailing list and writing mini-tutorials, which will be merged into one thorough guide book someday. Issues ===== There are two source code contribution in progress. The one is AsyncWeb (http://asyncweb.safehaus.org/ ), a HTTP implementation based on MINA. The other is a few classes that supports heart-beat mechanism for MINA. The owners of the source code, LogicaCMG and Indagon Ltd respectively, have signed software grants and faxed them. We see no problem importing these two contributions because the main authors of AsyncWeb are already members of MINA PMC, and the heart-beat implementation is small enough (just 4 classes) for us to maintain. They are going to be imported into the SVN repository once the software grants are confirmed. Alex Karasulu and Robert Burrell Donkin helped us to understand the overall process about accepting code contribution. We couldn't make all this happen without their help!

Apache MINA is a Java network application framework, which enables rapid development of high-performance and high-quality network applications. TLP Promotion ============= All infra changes required for TLP promotion has been finished thanks to Henri Yandell's help. One last thing is to add a link to mina.apache.org in www.apache.org, but we didn't add the link by our will because we feel that we need to finish our work on documentation before getting listed there. We have great community, but we don't want the community overloaded by overwhelming traffic due to bad documentation. Releases ======== There was no releases in this period. We are very close to 1.0.2 though. 11 issues have been fixed. Community News ============== Julien Vermillard is adding serial and parallel port communication feature to MINA using RXTX library ( http://www.rxtx.org/). It's progrssing slowly, but once done, we will be able to support more transports which is based on blocking I/O. Mike Heath is working on asynchronous I/O API with JNI. It's working with file for now, but the goal of this subproject is to provide AIO API and its implementation and to plug it into MINA. Issues ====== Mike Heath has announced a release of AIOJ snapshot without firing any vote. PMC has noticed it quickly and corrected his announcement. He said it was not his intention to announce something officially and it was just a mistake. We agreed that it's a mistake and decided to find better road map to release AIOJ, which is immature yet.

Apache MINA is a Java network application framework, which enables rapid development of high-performance and high-quality network applications. TLP Promotion ============= The required infra changes for MINA TLP promotion has been finished, except for JIRA. We requested the infra team to change our project ID from DIRMINA to MINA and to create appropriate groups in JIRA, but it's not finished yet. It's OK for now, but we will at least need our own JIRA groups for better permission management. Please let me know if any further assistance is needed, so I can help the infra team. The whole MINA web site has been migrated to cwiki.apache.org. mina.apache.org contains only a small .htaccess file that proxies the requests to htp://cwiki.apache.org/MINA/ selectively. The build script generates only report pages such as JavaDoc and Xref. Releases ======== MINA 1.0.1 has been released on December 6, 2006, with 15 issues including 13 bugs fixed. Community News ============== Wildfire, Jive Software's commercial XMPP (Jabber protocol) server has replaced their in-house networking layer with MINA, and got an impressive scalability boost, 33,000 concurrent users. We've found that people who didn't fax his or her CLA are having difficulties sharing his or her performance test results easily. They usually share their reports using the mailing list, but centralized efforts are inevitable to transform their text messages into fancy charts and explanation with more flesh. Issues ====== We are facing more requests on documentation. Two community members, Cameron Taggart and Jeroen Brattinga, sent their CLAs to get write access to the cwiki space. There's no big activity so far, but we expect more activity once we start to upload more tutorials and guides. Alex Karasulu has been trying to clear IP issues with AsyncWeb, an asynchronous HTTP implementation built on top of MINA. It took moderate amount of time due to the lawyers' lack of understanding on the ASF, but they finally have agreed on signing the software grant. We expect embracing AsyncWeb project under Apache MINA due to their strong relationship and dependency once the IP clarification process is finished. Henri was confused regarding the need for an iCLA in order for someone to publish performance results. The answer was that these results are published on the Project Wiki and in order to have write access on it, an iCLA is needed.
