## Description: Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012, and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention. ## Membership Data: Apache Marmotta was founded 2013-11-20 (7 years ago) There are currently 13 committers and 11 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 7:6. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members. Last addition was Mark A. Matienzo on 2016-08-18. - No new committers. Last addition was Xavier Sumba on 2017-03-27. ## Project Activity: Almost none. Two mails were sent to the dev-list on rebooting development efforts, but without any significant response. ## Community Health: Given the little response on the Attic-Question raised on the dev-list, especially from the PMC members, the community seems mostly dormant or moved away, and new committers are not in sight.

The current release cycle (3.4.0) focuses on refining and fixing bug, plus incorporation some new non-core features. Besides the work done towards 3.4.0 and the release itself, no significant development activities have taken place. ## Description: Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012, and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. ## Issues: There are no major issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: We had a bit more traffic on the mailing lists in the last three months. Some user questions asked on users@ and dev@ have been asked and answered, also some minimal development progress and small bugfixes happend in the codebase. However, the release of 3.4.0 is still blocked by a broken plugin in the build process. ## Health report: The project was considered feature-complete in 3.3.0. The current release cycle (3.4.0) focuses on refining and fixing bug, plus incorporation some non-core new features. The development activities (issues, commits, emails) continue to be on a very low level. # Marmotta Board Report for November, 2017; ## Description: Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012, and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. ## Issues: There are no major issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: Two very quiet months since the last report. After GSoC finished, the mailing-lists went silent. A single bugfix was committed, but no other acitvities happened. We're still struggling to ensure the midterm viability of the project. ## Health report: The project was considered feature-complete in 3.3.0. The current release cycle (3.4.0) focuses on refining and fixing bug, plus incorporation some non-core new features. The development activities (issues, commits, emails) have significantly come down in the last year. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - Last PMC addition was Mark A. ## Description: Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012, and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. ## Issues: There are no major issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: Another period of low activity, also caused by an extra summer-low. We're still struggling to ensure the midterm viability of the project. Google Summer of Code brought us an engaged student working on the task of upgrading from Sesame to Eclipse RDF4J. The codebase shows good progress, but was not finished due to open issues within the codebase and third-party libraries. More details in our wiki (https://s.apache.org/tVx6) and the related PR (https://s.apache.org/o38k) ## Health report: The project was considered feature-complete in 3.3.0. # Marmotta Board Report for May 2017 ## Description: Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012, and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. ## Issues: There are no major issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: Still very low, but a quarter with more activity in the community, specially regarding questions and patches. The community still struggles to find its fit to warranty midterm viability of the project. Therefore it is critical to find new people with the time and the ideas to keep the project alive and being a reference in the Linked Data spectrum. Given his contributions to the project, Xavier Sumba was invited as new committer. Regarding that, we have proposed to Google Summer of Code the task of upgrading to Eclipse RDF4J. Marmotta still uses the old Sesame, and this is critical for the future technical viability. The project received two different proposals, accepting the one by Gustavo Mora (Ecuador). Further details at the announcement mail: https://s.apache.org/atjc ## Health report: The project was considered feature-complete in 3.3.0. The current release cycle (3.4.0) focuses on refining and fixing bug, plus incorporation some non-core new features. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012, and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: A very quiet quarter in the project, both in terms of development and mailing lists activity. The project struggles to find new challenges and people to activelly work on the project. This issue has been discussed several times, still looking for a sustainable solution. A release is long overdue (now more than two years since the last!). After the last report in November there was some small and short-lived development activity to resolve the remaining issues, but without much progress. ## Health report: The project was considered feature-complete in 3.3.0. # Marmotta Board Report for August 2016 ## Description: Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012, and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: As the previous, this has not been a very active period either. Most of the issues we targeted for 3.4.0 still remain open. So we are discussing how to move forward with the release in the next few weeks (https://s.apache.org/pzef). The reduction of frequent contributions from many of the core members is affecting the project development and support. Therefore we have started to look for solutions to grow the community and help in the future development. Mark A. Matienzo has been recently added as Committer and PMC member (https://s.apache.org/ztE6). W3C has kicked-off a relevant Community Group for evolving LDP (https://www.w3.org/community/ldpnext/). The new recent member (Mark) could represent the project, although goals has not yet been discussed. ## Health report: The project was considered feature-complete in 3.3.0. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. A quarter with increasing activity, resuming quite some open developments towards what should be 3.4.0 sooner than later. The activity in the users mailing list continues increasing, with more new people joining there for questions and/or issues reports. The interested on pushing 3.4.0 out has been resumed https://s.apache.org/d5Ob Presumably, awaiting for some open issue, we should be able to get the new release out within the next few weeks. That milestone would open the question about having an inflection point, where the project can more forward in many technical aspects (Java 8, RDF4J, etc). Recently we have adapted our public images to the new ASF branding, slightly renovating the project logo, see: https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/marmotta/logo/v2/ Supported by the TAC, Sergio represented the project in the ApacheCon North America in Vancouver, giving a speech about the GeoSPARQL support. The talk took place in the context of the Geospatial track proposed by OGC for the Apache Big Data conference. Marmotta Board Report for February 2016 ======================================= Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. Another low activity quarter, with just small developments towards what the project should release as 3.4.0 in the upcoming weeks. The stability of the source code is heading the project to get more focused activity out there, getting quite some interesting contributions to improve the performance. One the 3.4 milestone, the project already discussed to take bigger steps for a new release (4.0?), where new fresh things, like Java 8 and Sesame 4, should come in. The last developments regarding geospatial querying (GeoSPARQL) have reached the news with, not only posts at the ASF/OGC blogs, but also at some third-party media. We are already trying to find the resources necessary to adapt the project identity (mainly logo) to the new look recently adopted by The Foundation. Subscribers to the projects mailing list: dev@marmotta.a.o: 88 subscribers (+2 since last report, 2015-11) users@marmotta.a.o: 107 subscribers (+5 since last report, 2015-11) Releases: 2014-12-05 (3.3.0) 2014-05-20 (3.2.1) Committers & PMC (last additions): Peter Ansell (committer&PMC, 2013-06-24) Raffaele Palmieri (committer&PMC, 2013-05-21) Issues for the Board: There are no Board-level issues at this time.
Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. Another low activity quarter, with only few messages on both, user@m.a.o and dev@m.a.o. Still, a small but high quality discussion with new community members on perfomance and proposals for improvement has started. Our GSoC-2015 student ("Proposal to Implement GeoSPARQL in Marmotta" MARMOTTA-584) passed the final exam and his code is currently integrated in a separate branch. We hope to merge it into the main codebase for the next release. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. The last quarter was again relatively quiet. The frequency on the mailing lists increased with questions and queries answered by the core development team, but and only small changes to the codebase have been made. We are still struggling to grow the community. More than two years passed since we welcomed a new committer. The PMC is actively looking for candidates to grow the community. For the 2015 GSoC we started with two student projects: * For "RDF HDT implementation for Sesame RIO" (MARMOTTA-593), the student did not pass the midterm review. This was mainly because of the code quality and lack of communication. * For "Proposal to Implement GeoSPARQL in Marmotta" (MARMOTTA-584), the student successfully achieved the milestones for the midterm review, and now he is moving towards refining and adding the pending features. If the project development continues as expected, by end of summer Marmotta could add GeoSPARQL support to the next release. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. We have again two students for GSoC 2015: * "RDF HDT implementation for Sesame RIO" (MARMOTTA-593), by Junyue Wang, and * "Proposal to Implement GeoSPARQL in Marmotta" (MARMOTTA-584), by Francisco Xavier Sumba Toral. The last quarter has been relatively quiet on the lists, and also the codebase did not change a lot. Community building is becoming an issue for Marmotta: Soon two years will have passed since we last elected a new committer. The PMC is aware of this and is actively looking for candidates. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. On December 5th Apache Marmotta 3.3.0 with several important new features was released: * Full LDP 1.0 support (Marmotta is listed as reference implementation) * Major improvements in the SPARQL -> SQL translation After the release and towards the end of the year, the mailinglists got quite silent. However, questions on the users-list are answered in a timely manner. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. We successfully accomplish our first Google Summer of Code project (Implementation of the LDP service for Apache Marmotta based on SPARQL 1.1, MARMOTTA-444). Unfortunately after the end of the program we have not managed to keep the student working and maintaining the alternative implementation his project provided. Linked Data Platform 1.0 is moving to W3C Last Call, and Apache Marmotta continues activelly contributing to the technology providing one of the reference implementations: http://s.apache.org/4RN Apache Marmotta was presented in a half-day tutorial at the ISWC 2014. The 25 participants were introduced into "Marmotta as a linked data server", the LDP 1.0 implementation and SPARQL-MM extensions. http://s.apache.org/glR Sept and Oct have been two very busy months on the users mailing list, with questions about documentation but also bug-reports. We are trying to migrate candidates to the dev-list for contributions and as candidates to grow the community. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. In May 2014, Apache Marmotta v3.2.1 was released. After a very busy April, the development activity has dropped in the last quarter. On the other hand, July was a very busy month on the users list with several inquiries from new members of the user community. Questions are answered timely, mostly by the core dev-team. W3C has published LDP 1.0 as Candidate Recommendation, the Marmotta community is actively developing the official test suite at GitHub, early testing Marmotta with the goal of having listed our platform as reference implementation of LDP 1.0. GSoC 2014 is progressing according to the plan. It looks our student will meet all goals of the project. We hope to keep him engaged within the community, as he showed some good evidences in this regard. Apache Marmotta, an Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta was founded in December 2012 and has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013. In April 2014, Apache Marmotta v3.2.0 was released. The next maintenance release (v3.1.1) is expected in the upcoming weeks. Traffic on the lists is stable. We have been approached by "OverLOD Surfer", a research project, to discuss synergies, common goals and ways to collaborate. For the 2014 GSoC Program, Marmotta received 3 project proposals of which one was finally accepted: Qihong Lin: "Implementation of the LDP service for Apache Marmotta based on SPARQL 1.1", http://s.apache.org/rE inspired by MARMOTTA-444 Of the other two, one was withdrawn by the student, the second was not evaluated because only two mentors signed up from the Marmotta community. An Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013, this is the second report as a TLP to the Board. The traffic on the mailing lists was intense beginning of December, however during XMas and New Year it got rather silent. In total, the number of messages is at about the average of the recent months. The upcoming release could not be finished before XMas and was rescheduled for this month, the work on it will be taken up in the next days when people return from their vacations. An Open Platform for Linked Data. Apache Marmotta has graduated from the Incubator in November 2013, this is the first report as a TLP to the Board. The transition was completed within less than a week and development is converging to the first release as a TLP. Engagement on the mailing lists is good, the dev-list is on a stable high volume (around 200/month) and the user-list shows growing engagement and interest in the last quarter. Subscribers to the projects mailing list: dev@marmotta.a.o: 56 subscribers user@marmotta.a.o: 55 subscribers Branding For the transition from Incubator to a TLP, we have (temporarily) modified project logo [1]. An Open Platform for Linked Data. Marmotta has been incubating since 2012-12-03. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. Check whether Marmotta is a suitable name (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PODLINGNAMESEARCH-39) 2. PPMC & IPMC discussion and vote about gratuation 3. Graduate tasks Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? No such issues. How has the community developed since the last report? * The NOTICE&LICENSE issues from last time are now properly solved. * The 3.1.0-incubating release was rescheduled to "after summer vacation time" and prepared in late September (released October 3rd). * Traffic on dev@marmotta.i.a.o was decreasing over the summer months, but is rising again in September during the preparation of the last release. * We are starting to get bug reports from non-committers in JIRA while traffic on users@marmotta.i.a.o is slowly evolving. How has the project developed since the last report? * The 3.1.0-incubating release has been accepted on October 3rd. * The project was explicitly recommended for graduation after the last report in July (<http://s.apache.org/LIF8>) but we wanted to have another release before graduation to stabilize the release process and and have another check of the N&L by the incubator community. * Consequently the discussion graduation is being resumed after the release, trying the do it by the end of October if no new issues appear. Date of last release: 2013-10-03 (3.1.0-incubating) When were the last committers or PMC members elected? 2013-05-21 (Raffaele Palmieri, committer&PPMC) 2013-06-24 (Peter Ansell, committer&PPMC) So no new committers and/or PPMC member since the last report. An Open Platform for Linked Data. Marmotta has been incubating since 2012-12-03. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. Ingest code and clear IP. 2. A release 3. Build dev and PMC. Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? No such issues. How has the community developed since the last report? * dev@marmotta.i.a.o continues with high traffic but slightly decreasing: Apr. 265, May 161, Jun. 137. We expect the numbers to raise again with the preparation of the next release. * Two new persons have been elected as new committer and PPMC members: Raffaele Palmieri (Eustema Spa) on May 21st, 2013, and Peter Ansell (University of Queensland) on Jun 24th, 2013. How has the project developed since the last report? * The first release (3.0.0-incubating) has been published on April 24th, 2013. Since that the project is actively working of different improvements, bug fixes and new features, registering 266 issues at jira (60% resolved). * The next release (3.1.0-incubation) is planned for the upcoming weeks (http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-marmotta-dev/201307.mbox/%3C51D40104.3060203%40apache.org%3E). * The first two most important issues the project targets to move towards graduation have been already achieved; and the third one, dev community, is being addressed too. Therefore the project has already started to discuss about such option (http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-marmotta-dev/201305.mbox/%3C51A35FFA.2070707%40apache.org%3E). How has the project developed since the last report? After the publication of LMF 2.6.0, the base code had been imported on February 19th. Since that, the team has been working hard to implement all necessary refactoring and, in parallel, some bug fixing; which in total means almost 200 issues already registered at Jira (70% resolved, the rest mostly planned tasks/features). This approach is enabling the participation of new people in the community of the project. * Branding: Logo almost ready, trademarks@apache already contacted. Awaiting for the site installation. How has the project developed since the last report? The project is about publish the last release of the former project (LMF), to them contribute the parts that will be actually Marmotta.
