Security:
- We received a vulnerability report against MyFaces Trinidad on July 20th and
 responded to the reporter the same day. We released patched versions of
 Trinidad 1.2.x, 2.0.x, and 2.1.x on Sept 29th along with CVE-2016-5019.

Issues:
  mt asked: Is it time to retire CODI and Orchestra? Also, a quick look at
     myfaces.a.o doesn't make it clear that CDI/Deltaspike is the
     recommended approach for new users.

 Initially, no one from the MyFaces PMC responded to these questions at the
 end of July, but discussion has started this week. On Oct 12th, I posted
 a request for help on the dev@deltaspike and dev@myfaces lists to see if
 anyone there would be willing to update the pages for CODI and Orchestra.
 Two individuals who are members of both PMCs suggested some changes to the
 CODI and Orchestra pages to indicate that these two projects are not
 actively maintained and to redirect users to DeltaSpike or Spring. There
 was a trivial contribution for Orchestra on Aug 10th which was applied on
 Aug 11th, so support is still being provided when requested.

15 Jul 2015 [Mike Kienenberger / Jim]

## Description:
   The Apache MyFaces project is an umbrella project of the Apache Software
   Foundation for projects relating to the JavaServer Faces (JSF) technology.

## Activity:
 - Apache Tobago is healthy and active.
 - All other MyFaces subprojects are in maintenance mode with no active
   development.
 - There was no commit activity in most subprojects, and only a couple of
   commits in the others.
 - Patches continue to be submitted, but are not always applied.
 - User and dev mailing list questions are not always answered.
 - Added 1 new PMC member and 4 new committers.

## Issues:
 - Only Tobago MyFaces PMC members are actively involved with code development,
   although many PMC members monitor the private@ mailing list and vote on
   community changes. A total of 14 PMC members voted on six community member
   changes, with between six-to-ten PMC members voting each time. Many PMC
   members monitor the dev@mailing list and release candidates receive the
   necessary votes to be released, with three to five binding votes on average.

 - There were no new committers or PMC members until this reporting period.
   While someone suggested a new committer in November 2014, no one followed
   through with a vote (The individual in question is now one of our new
   committers). The last time someone other than myself initiated a vote for a
   new committer was Sept 2011.

   We've discussed the committer issue on private back in April, and I proposed
   that we offer commit access sooner in order to retain contributors who are
   interested in the project. I also offered some ideas on identifying
   potential committer candidates sooner. We agreed that whenever a
   contributor's patch is applied that we should drop a note to the private@
   mailing list. Two of our new committers have yet to commit their own
   pending JIRA patches despite accepting the invitation to be a committer, so
   it remains to be seen if our policy to offer commit access sooner will be
   effective.

   Unfortunately, I am still the only one nominating new committers and all
   five candidates were nominated by me. It's unclear to me what more can be
   done to motivate our current PMC members to become active in this process,
   but those who are applying the patches submitted by contributors should be
   the ones who are also nominating new committers. As we nominate new PMC
   members, I will try to make the need for the new PMC members to be
   nominating committers more clear.

 - Patches continue to be submitted, but are not always applied in a timely
   manner for most of the subprojects. Sometimes it's difficult to find
   someone with enough expertise to determine if they should be applied. In
   the case of Trinidad and PortletBridge, there is no one stepping foward who
   is familiar with the codebase. The same issue exists for user and
   developer questions on the mailing list for these subprojects. I've been
   attempting to recruit new developers from those submitting patches and bug
   reports, but we may need to retire these projects. It's now well-known why
   umbrella projects are not best-practice, but it's unclear how we move away
   from this for inactive sub-projects. We have discussed the problem on our
   private list while talking about the health of Myfaces in general, but we
   would be interested in any guidance on this from other ASF members reading
   this report.

 - I suggested that Tobago consider becoming an independent TLP, but that there
   was no response from the three members of the Tobago team who are on the
   MyFaces PMC.

 - Concern was once again expressed by one of our developers that the lack of a
   TCK has resulted in the replacement of MyFaces with Mojarra in every
   application server except Tomee.

## PMC/Committership changes:

 - Currently 76 committers and 39 PMC members in the project.
 - Hazem Saleh was added to the PMC on Fri May 15 2015

Issues
------
The TCK issue mentioned in our January report for 2014 still exists.
Werner Punz [1] and Leonardo Uribe [2] discussed the impacts of this issue and
the impacts are summarized as follows:
 * It reduces our marketability, since consumers are more likely to pick
   an open-source JSF implementation certified as
   "TCK-compliant" over a non-certified one.
 * It reduces our ability to be distributed as part of a Java EE stack,
   such as Apache TomEE and Apache Geronimo,
   since their TCK certification depends upon our TCK certification.

Issues
------
The release of MyFaces-Core is problematic due to
an inability to acquire a JSF TCK more recent than
February 2013. The February TCK is flawed and
we need a more recent version to pass the TCK.
Discussion continues on how we should resolve this,
but we probably do not have enough expertise to resolve
how to acquire a newer TCK or how to do a release without
the TCK within the MyFaces community.
We are considering talking with other projects who
might be in the same situation.

= Discussions =
 * The Trinidad subproject now has a new skin (look-and feel). Since the
skin was a large code contribution by someone who is not a committer,
we checked on the "general AT incubator.apache.org" mailing list to determine
if we needed a software grant for the skin. Since nothing indicated that we
required a software grant (http://j.mp/cTpWak and http://j.mp/bX1TvY),
we merged the donation to our code-base
(see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/TRINIDAD-1689).

 * A new subproject "CODI" has been created. The goal is to deliver jsf
extensions for the JSR299, and we continue to closely work with the Apache
OpenWebBeans community on this project.

 * We have finally received an updated version of the TCK which takes into
account our challenges and are rerunning the TCK.

 * We are slowly following up on a security report. We feel it's acceptable to
take a slower approach since the issue has been well-known for several years.

 * Google Summer of Code: The Apache MyFaces team has submitted the following
ideas for which students can apply:
-Module for automated webapp tests for MyFaces core + extensions
=> https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MYFACESTEST-6
-[MAB] MyFaces Application Builder:
=> https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MYFACES-2635
-MyFaces 2.0 performance improvements:
=> https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MYFACES-2634
-HTML 5 renderkit for MyFaces:
=> https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MYFACES-2632

 * We will update the documentation and move it to
http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/MYFACES/Index (step-by-step)

 * Important to note again, but Apache MyFaces released the first alpha
of the JSF 2.0 spec implementation. We are now "working" on the TCK...
 * Apache MyFaces PMC member Werner Punz is now part of the JSF EG,
representing Apache together with Martin Marinschek
 * MyFaces 2 (post alpha) can now be integrated with Geronimo
(see SVN REV: 893759)
 * Work on Trinidad 2.0 is still going on:
-Several patches have been applied to that branch.
-A first release of a 2.0.0-alpha will come soon.
-The maven plugins for 2.0.x are on the vote (for a release).
 * Orchestra started to work on JSF 2.0 stuff as well
 * Extension-Scripting ongoing work in the area of dynamic Java recompilation
and reloading for JSF, getting close to an alpha release (probably next month)

Geir confirms that he is aware of this project's involvement with the JCP.

= Discussions =
 * More on the "logger vote" (for details check our July2009 report):
The original vote was to replace commons-logging with the JavaUtilLogger.
Current situation in MyFaces is that some projects use different loggers:
  * Apache MyFaces Trinidad => JUL (+ a little facade for i18n)
  * CORE 2.0 => JUL
  * Core (for 1.x),Tomahawk,Tobago => commons-logging
Now, the vote was to replace the commons-logger by JUL (like Trinidad has),
but some other project want to use slf4j. Finally agreement is that we
(the myfaces community) are now +1 to go away from commons-logger. This
suggestion (http://markmail.org/message/5rrjzerkzuqtymxg) we agreed on
(no more mails means agreed). Seriously, as there are tons and gazillions
of different loggers, votes (and discussions) on loggers are always fun...

 * Work on Trinidad 2.0 (based on JSF 2.0) started.
This branch requires now JDK 1.6. We also got new contributions in that area.

 * A scripting subproject has been created. Currently the work is on getting
the groovy support bridge stable. This may become part of MyFaces core,
but for now this is an extra module.

 * The MyFaces PMC is trying to get another guy -Werner Punz- to join the
"JSF expert group" (as a backup for Martin Marinschek), however there is
NO response from the expert group (and its lead).
Not sure how this can be solved in the future.

= Discussions =
 * discussion to add a second MyFaces member to the JavaServer Faces
Expert Group (JSR 314). No response from Ed Burns (spec lead) so far.
 * Longer vote was done to replace the used logging; Not the entire
MyFaces community agrees to force all subproject to use the same
logger tool. Vote was stopped; More to come...
 * SVN structure change for MyFaces CORE has been approved.
The SVN change hasn't been done yet.
The community also expressed interest in having a GIT mirror.
 * MyFaces 2.0 is still getting more attention. The new committers are
active in this area; Contributions (mailing list / JIRA) are coming in
from the wider community as well

Community: Greg: What does "vote was stopped" mean? Some kind of community problem?

Jim: No community problem. See: http://markmail.org/message/s6ep4k3wzqa7l633 http://markmail.org/message/5rrjzerkzuqtymxg Just discussion.

JSR314: Brett: is the second JSR314 EG member representing Apache or themselves?

Justin: Can Geir help out with JSR 314 issue?

Geir: Second EG member is one representing us. It's the spec lead's discretion on this - in the past we've had multiple, and had multiple refused. I've been following the issue, and thought that Ed was just on vacation or such. Will check w/ MyFaces.

New web design
==============
 * Thanks to Adonis Raduca our MyFaces Website [1] shines in new splendor.
   Adonis has also worked hard on new Logos for the various MyFaces
   sub projects.

JSF 2.0 collaboration with Sun
==============================
 * There where some discussions about joining forces with java.net community
   (="Sun") for upcoming JSF 2.0. Some suggested to contribute to the JSF 2.0
   reference implementation at java.net instead of starting our own Apache
   MyFaces JSF 2.0 implementation.
   Conclusion: Due to license issues this seems rather hypothetical. Project
   Mojarra [2] (= the Sun JSF 2.0 RI) is currently CDDL+GPL. Unless
   Sun switches Mojarra to Apache License (which seems very unlikely!) and/or
   donates their code to the ASF it is impossible to contribute to this java.net
   project as a community. Of course, everybody is free to contribute as an
   individual.
   Experience from JSF 1.2 has shown that finishing a JSF 2.0 implementation
   might become an exhausting process. And there seems to be some kind of
   pessimism in the community.
   My personal feelings are: There will definitely be an Apache MyFaces JSF 2.0
   implementation. Only question is: when!

    - MyFaces Trinidad (JSF 1.1 branch)
    - MyFaces Trinidad (JSF 1.2 branch)

MyFaces "Commons" Sub Project
=============================
 * After controversial yet productive discussions the MyFaces community
   introduced the new sub project "Apache MyFaces Commons". This will be
   the haven for convenient JSF stuff that is useful for application
   developers as well as JSF component developers. MyFaces Commons will
   be independent of the actual JSF implementation and JSF component
   libraries.

JSR-301 code donation
=====================
 * IP clearance of donation of JSR-301 (JSF 1.2 portlet bridge) reference
   implementation [1] ended up in the new sub project "Apache MyFaces
   Portlet Bridge" [2].

"Translated messages" donation by Oracle
========================================
 * IP clearance for donation of "Translated messages for the Apache
   MyFaces Trinidad component library" [3] was done.

MyFaces Core (JSF 1.2 branch)
=======================
 * JSF 1.2 (JSR-252) development branch has reached it's most
important milestone: all TCK tests where successfully passed. A first
official release is scheduled.
 * MyFaces 1.2 is also delivered with Geronimo which passed Java EE
5.0 TCK on June 4, 2007.

MyFaces Core (JSF 1.1)
==================
 * No new release.

MyFaces Tomahawk
================
 * An important XSS (cross-site scripting) security fix version
(1.1.6) was released on June 12, 2007.

MyFaces Tobago
=============
 * Latest MyFaces Tobago sub project (JSF component library) release
1.0.11 was published on June 3, 2007.

MyFaces Trinidad
=============
 * MyFaces Trinidad (fka ADF Faces) has successfully left the
Incubator and is now an official sub-project under the MyFaces
umbrella.
 * Latest MyFaces Trinidad sub project (JSF component library) release
1.2.1 was published on July 5, 2007.

Summary
=======
 * Active Community, some additions
 * JSF 1.2 compatible MyFaces making progress but slower than expected
 * Release stability and release cycles are getting better

Community
=========
 * New PMC members: Bernd Bohmann, Volker Weber, Gerald Muellan, Wendy Smoak
 * New committer: Paul McMahan
 * Still very active user and developer community

JSF 1.2
=======
 * JSF 1.2 (JSR-252) development branch is making progress but is
   still in an early (pre TCK test) stage.

MyFaces Core
============
 * A new stable MyFaces Core (API + Impl) release 1.1.5 was published
   on February 16, 2007.

MyFaces Tomahawk
================
 * A new MyFaces Tomahawk release candidate 1.1.5 was voted on. Due to
   missing license files in some artifacts a second release candidate is
   currently prepared and will (hopefully) go out in the next days.

MyFaces Tobago
=============
 * Latest MyFaces Tobago sub project (JSF component library) release
   1.0.10 was published on March 12, 2007.

Conclusion
==========
All in all we are making good progress and it seems we have overcome
our release problems (which where the main concern in our last report).
We now have detailed release diaries that are a good starting point
for a precise release procedure documentation. So the next core and
tomahawk releases should be possible with less pain.

17 Jan 2007 [Manfred Geiler / Justin]

Summary
=======
 * Active Community, no substantial changes
 * JSF 1.2 compatible MyFaces coming soon
 * Release stability and release cycles are our weak point

Community
=========
 * Votes to add three more PMC members took place
 * Still very active user and developer community

JSF 1.2
=======
 * JSF 1.2 (JSR-252) development branch is making good progress and is
planned to be feature complete by end of first quarter 2007.
 * JSR-252 TCK has been received from Sun and is ready for testing.
 * There are contacts to the Geronimo team and MyFaces 1.2.x is
planned to be included in upcoming Geronimo 2.0 Milestone.

MyFaces Core
============
 * Latest stable MyFaces Core (API + Impl) release is still 1.1.4 that
was published on September 18, 2006.
 * Core 1.1.5 is pending and will be out soon - hopefully.

MyFaces Tomahawk
================
 * Next release 1.1.4 of sub project MyFaces Tomahawk (JSF component
library) should have been published shortly after the last report, but
was not. Reason: Lack of testers, lack of interest, ...? Everyone
seems to be using (and testing) the latest 1.1.5 snapshots.

MyFaces Tobago
==============
 * Latest MyFaces Tobago sub project (JSF component library) release
1.0.9 was published on 23/Dec/06.

Conclusion
========
All in all we are making good progress but we MUST improve our release
procedure to get more stable releases and to improve our release
cycles. There are already some ongoing discussions and ideas on our
lists regarding these issues.

Justin asked if the ASF-wide release guidelines would be helpful; the board concurred and suggested that PMCs be reminded of the common aspects of releases. Sander reminded the board that the usage of the 'Tomahawk; name was discouraged and discussed as recently as November on the MyFaces private list. Sander was to forward the thread to the board list.

JSF 1.2
=======
About 50% of work is done to make MyFaces JSF 1.2 (JSR-252)
compatible. We are expecting to get access to the TCK within the
next weeks.

The board noted that we have previously informed MyFaces that 'Tomahawk' was unacceptable. This will be re-done since the report indicates that the name is still being used.

The ADF Faces / Trinidad project solved lot's of todos. We repackaged
the software to get rid of adf inside the namespace. We also renamed
some of the JSF components. We managed to get a website and deployed
it the the incubator site. We created a first RC of our maven2
plugins, which is currently under review phase by some Incubator PMC
members. The size of committers is grwoing. Added two new committers
to the project during the last three month. Users (or developers)
action is much beyond from just sending questions. Jira is a important
fact of this community, where users apply patches to. The community is
still growing. In August we had 438 sent to the developers list. In
July it have been 266.

Summary
=======
 * No new release published since last report, next release (1.1.2) soon
 * Growing and healthy community
 * Tobago moving out of incubator
 * ADF Faces incubated
 * Transfer of "myfaces.org" domain to ASF is done

Release
=======
 * Latest release: still 1.1.1, published on October 27, 2005
 * 1.1.2 was close to releasing in February, but release testing
   was stopped because the community decided to do a massive refactoring
   first. This refactoring affects the use of code, that is shared between
the
   core implementation and the Tomahawk component set. To be able to have
   independent release cycles for MyFaces Core and MyFaces Tomahawk it was
   necessary to cut the runtime dependency to those shared classes for
both.
   The refactoring was successful and we are currently preparing the new
   release (testing, TCK, vote). We are confident to be able to release by
the
   end of April.

Tobago
======
The Tobago JSF component set was successfully incubated
(http://incubator.apache.org/projects/tobago.html). All incubation
tasks are done. The MyFaces PMC has voted to accept the component set
as a MyFaces subproject. Incubator sign-off is pending.

ADF donation
============
Reminder: Oracle wants to donate their ADF Faces JSF component set to
the ASF. Now, Oracle people have brought some movement into ADF
donation issue by releasing a public source code drop of ADF Faces on
Jan 7, 2006.  (http://myfaces.apache.org/adf/apache-drop.zip).  Some
disussions and preliminary talks are still necessary before incubation
process can be initiated.

Domain
======
Transfer of domain "myfaces.org" to Apache Dotster has not yet happend
due to lack of time. We will contact @infra again on this.

Infrastructure

Summary
=======
 * TCK tests passed successfully for the very first time.
 * First official final release 1.1.0 published.
 * Growing and healthy community.
 * New component set ("Tobago") to be incubated.

Latest News
===========
 * August 25: We finally got access to the JSF 1.1 TCK (Thanks to Geir
    Magnusson for his sedulous efforts!)
 * September 12: We passed all TCK tests successfully for the first time.
 * September 19: We were able to publish our first official final
    release 1.1.0.

Community
=========
 * Still growing: 8 new committers since the last status report and
    many contributors sending patches.
 * Healthy: 636 subscribers and 40 mails per day on our user list.
    Peak of 100000 hits per day on our website.
 * Efficient: After just two weeks of good teamwork we where able to
    pass all TCK tests.

Tobago
======
The company Atanion (http://www.atanion.com) wants to contribute their
component set named "Tobago" (http://tobago.atanion.net/site/) to the
ASF. They will go through the Incubator process
(http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/TobagoProposal). As the developers
of Tobago have already been very active in our community, we have
already granted them committer rights to MyFaces. The sourcebase will
be reviewed in the incubator process.

Domain
======
Transfer of domain "myfaces.org" to Apache Dotster has not yet happend
due to lack of time. We will contact @infra again on this.

Infrastructure
==============
The restructuring payed off. We now have a clear separation between
API, implementation, examples, component set ("Tomahawk") and sandbox.

Release
=======
 * Latest release 1.1.0, published on September 19 was... Well, let's
    call it a little "bumpy". Although stable and TCK tested there was
    a showstopper due to a missing configuration file. A workaournd is
    available, but the problem could have been avoided with more
    careful release candidate testing. Perhaps we where a little bit
    too euphoric after having passed the TCK. ;-)

 * Release candiate testing for next release (1.1.1) is currently in progress.

Approved by General Consent.

Summary
=======
* MyFaces has a growing and very healthy community
* JavaServer Faces and MyFaces are getting more and more attention
* One ASF internal problem (see point 'Community' below)

Latest News
===========

At the JavaOne Oracle officially anounced their plans to support
MyFaces by making the Oracle ADF components (i.e. Oracle's JavaServer
Faces Component Set) open source and "donating" them to the ASF. We
had some interesting talks with employees of Oracle. Legal concerns
are solved on their side and they are willing to go through the
Incubator with their stuff. The integration will be done step-by-step,
but will take quite some time. There are many technical issues not yet
solved and making the ADF components fit into the MyFaces source
structure will be a challenge for all of us. Coverage of MyFaces at
the JavaOne was very good (mentioned in many sessions) and attention
has been growing since then. We had our all-time-high regarding page
hits during last week with nearly 44000:
http://people.apache.org/~vgritsenko/stats/projects/myfaces.html

Community
=========
Our community is still growing: 2 new committers since the last status
report. PROBLEM: Our account creation requests are still pending,
although both CLAs have been filed for weeks. Account requests where
done like defined in http://www.apache.org/dev/pmc.html (mail to root
already sent twice) but there was no response or activity yet.

Domain
======
We are currently in contact with @infra to prepare the transfer of
domain "myfaces.org" to Apache Dotster.

Infrastructure
==============
Complete reorg of project structure is finished now. MyFaces has been
divided into several sub-trees within the SVN repository and the build
process was redesigned completely. With that, the implementation can
be built completely seperate of the component set.

Release
=======
No official release since last report because of the reorg (see
above).

Latest News
===========
We are currently having an exciting discussion with Oracle. Oracle
has expressed serious intentions to support MyFaces. They want to make
their ADF components open source and are willing to donate them to the
ASF.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/partners/addins/exchange/jsf/doc/index.html
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/partners/addins/exchange/jsf/doc/tagdoc/core/imageIndex.html
In addition to that, Oracle will provide assistance with two JSF
experts (Adam Winer and John Fallows). They will help us with the
integration and the support for the new components. The exact roadmap
for the integration is not yet fully discussed, but we have come to an
agreement, that a step-by-step approach is the best solution in this
case. Please bear in mind that - at the request of Oracle - this
information should be kept confidential until their legal department
has approved things. They also like to make some kind of announcement
at JavaOne (June 27 - 30). So, at the latest we will have an exact
plan then and - of course - we should not steal the show now. ;-)

Community
=========
We have a strong community and the user list
(users@myfaces.apache.org) is frequently used: about 10 new threads a
day, 3 replies at an average, almost no thread with no reply at all.

Management
==========
As resolved by the board the MyFaces PMC consists of the following
initial members:
 Manfred Geiler (manolito@apache.org)
 Thomas Spiegl (tomsp@apache.org)
 Martin Marinschek (mmarinschek@apache.org)
 Matthias Wessendorf (matzew@apache.org)
 Sylvain Vieujot (svieujot@apache.org)
 Grant Smith (grantsmith@apache.org)
 Bill Dudney (bdudney@apache.org)
 Anton Koinov (anton@apache.org)
 Travis Reeder (treeder@apache.org)
 Ted Husted (husted@apache.org)

Oliver Rossm?ller was already a PPMC member of MyFaces in
Incubator. Because of an unfortunate mistake he did not appear in the
board resoltion draft. Oliver was voted into PMC ex post and is now
an official member as well.

Domain
======
I'm still owner of the myfaces.org <http://myfaces.org> domain and
would like to point it to myfaces.apache.org
<http://myfaces.apache.org> if there is nothing to be said against
this. It expires in february 2006 and we could discuss later if it
makes sense to renew.

Infrastructure
==============
The mailing lists have been successfully moved from Incubator to top
level. Moving the depository from Incubator CVS to top level SVN has
not been done yet, but infrastructure is already informed about this
pending Task. We have a current discussion about the future project
structure. FYI, MyFaces consists of some parts that need to be
separated and rearranged: the JSR-127 API, the base JSF
implementation, common classes, additional non-standard components and
extensions, a sandbox (not yet)...

Release
=======

We have successfully released our first top level release "MyFaces
1.0.9 (m9)", but there where legal difficulties we had to solve. The
release ran through the ordinary process with 3 release candidate and
was voted "stable" by the community. Nevertheless, according to JSF
license restrictions we are not allowed to call our releases "final"
until we have passed the JSR-127 TCK. There was a discussion on how we
should label this stable release ("beta", "non-final", ...). IMHO, we
found a good tradeoff: Our current release is called "MyFaces
1.0.9(m9)". "m9" stands for "milestone 9". In addition to this label
there is a detailed explanation on our page. Craig McClanahan and Ed
Burns from Sun where both involved in this dicussion and consider this
solution reasonable.
