## Description: Apache OpenWebBeans is an ALv2-licensed implementations of the "Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform" specifications which are defined as JSR-299 (CDI-1.0), JSR-346 (CDI-1.1 and CDI-1.2 MR), JSR-365 (CDI-2.0) and Jakarta CDI (CDI-4.0). The OWB community also maintains a small server as Apache Meecrowave subproject. Meecrowave bundles latest releases of the ASF projects Tomcat + OpenWebBeans + CXF + Johnzon + log4j2. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: Recently there was more activity on the project again. Right now we have fixed some functional issues and also prepare a new Meecrowave release. The Target for JakartaEE11 is now CDI-4.1 instead of CDI-5.0. We'll incorporate those upgrades soonish. ## Community Health Activity was ok-ish. ~70 mails from 5 different people on the list over the last 3 months. ## PMC changes: - Currently 13 PMC members, 20 committers - Last PMC addition was Reinhard Sandtner on 2017-10-09. - Last committer addition was John D. Ament on 2017-10-09. ## Recent Releases - 4.0.2 was released on 2024-02-14. - 4.0.1 was released on 2023-11-16. - meecrowave-1.2.14 was released on 2022-05-11.

We worked on getting Meecrowave to jakarta natively but still need to go on and release it. Also there is a new CDI-5.0 spec on the horizon which we are looking into right now. ## Community Health Activity was low the last few months. But nothing of concern right now. No fresh committers in sight sadly. ## PMC changes: - Currently 13 PMC members, 20 committers - Last PMC addition was Reinhard Sandtner on 2017-10-09. - Last committer addition was John D. Meecrowave bundles latest releases of the ASF projects Tomcat9 + OpenWebBeans + CXF + Johnzon + log4j2. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: We switched our mainline development branch to OWB-4.0.0 which targets Jakarta CDI 4.0. This is the first native jakarta namespace work. We settled on not implementing "CDI-lite" in core OWB but to keep it totally pluggable. This is based on the fact that CDI-lite is actually only adding parts which are fully optional and not making CDI more lightweight (rather the opposite). There is a discussion whether we should name our upcoming release OWB-4.0.0 or OWB-4.0.0-alpha1 due to the fact that we intentionally do not implement all the spec. Which we btw never did in the past neither. The core parts of the CDI-4.0 spec are already implemented and we pass all of the TCK tests except the ones we challanged or intentionally do not address. ## Health: OWB is a stable project. With the work on CDI-4.0 the activity instantly came back to a good level. ## PMC changes: - Currently 13 PMC members, 20 committers - Last PMC addition was Reinhard Sandtner on 2017-10-09. - Last committer addition was John D. There is a new CDI 4.0 spec around the corner This will see a move to the jakarta namespace is heavily tailored for Quarkus. It contains parts which I a few and others criticised as not necessary on a technical level but our arguments got largely ignored by the driving vendor. It's a bit frustrating tbh. Maybe we will implement this in a split out module to at least remain compatible with the spec, but it just bloats the spec without adding too much benefit. But then this is not really a problem of OWB but within the spec. Otoh not implementing it would mean to also affect other projects. ## Health: OWB is a stable project. We also improved eventing performance a bit. We go through a phase of not so many changes. The last official CDI spec release was quite some time ago and the new JakartaEE based spec is not yet around the corner. Given that fact the activity was really ok. We also have a GSoC project going on which looks promising. ## Health report: Same as the last time: The project is still reasonably active and we also will see some fresh demand once (if) JakartaEE picks up speed. @Roman: pursue a report for OpenWebBeans
## Description: Apache OpenWebBeans software is an ALv2-licensed implementation of the JSR-299 "Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java (TM) EE platform" specification. We also provide full support for CDI-2.0 JSR-365. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention. ## Membership Data: Apache OpenWebBeans was founded 2009-12-16 (10 years ago) There are currently 20 committers and 13 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 5:4. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members. Last addition was Reinhard Sandtner on 2017-10-09. - No new committers. Last addition was John D. Ament on 2017-10-09. ## Project Activity: Project activity is fine. We became aware of yet another micro container framework which uses Apache OpenWebBeans as CDI container core. We continue with bug fixing and adoption to latest Java versions. There was also a quite nice interaction with the Apache Aries team regarding their OWB support for the osgi-cdi spec. ## Community Health: From time to time new users pop up on our lists but there are no new committers in sight right now. Otoh our active committer base is really fine and active.
## Description: Apache OpenWebBeans is an ALv2-licensed implementations of the "Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform" specifications which are defined as JSR-299 (CDI-1.0), JSR-346 (CDI-1.1 and CDI-1.2 MR) and JSR-365 (CDI-2.0). The OWB community also maintains a small server as Apache Meecrowave subproject. Meecrowave bundles latest releases of the ASF projects Tocmat9 + OpenWebBeans + CXF + Johnzon + log4j2. ## Project Activity: We regularly get contributions from rather unexpected places. Like the Jetty and Tomcat teams provided great feedback for integrating OWB into their servlet engines. We are right now preparing for a 2.0.12 release with bugfixes. ## Community Health: Contributions are alright. Very ok-ish for such a mature project. Otoh it's hard to attract new committers because of the complexity of the topic.
## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: Activity did decline a bit, although still on a fine level. This is expected and completely ok as the CDI-2.0 spec was released quite some time ago and the project is mature and stable. Java11 fine tuning is ongoing. ## Health report: Contributions are fine. We now had some tomcat folks looking into OWB. There was a discussion on the tc mailing list re where some specific pieces would best be kept. Still waiting for an official OWB ticket though. ## PMC changes: - Currently 13 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Reinhard Sandtner on Mon Oct 09 2017 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 20 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was John D. We fixed a few Java11 related issues. Next up is again looking a bit into performance. We are still fine, but probably could be even better. ## Health report: We got some contribution to our Meecrowave samples. Currently we are mostly in maintenance mode. Activity is fluctuating as most our contributors are involved in multiple ASF projects. Meecrowave bundles latest releases of the ASF projects Tocmat9 + OpenWebBeans + CXF + Johnzon + log4j2. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: We got slightly less activity this quarter but still shipped a few releases. We are currently preparing a maintenance release for OWB-1.7.x (EE7 level) and OWB-2.0.9. Both for improved Java11 support. Please keep in mind that the CDI-2.0 spec is now almost 3 years old. So we are per definition in a maintenance mode. ## Health report: Community is doing fine. We get feedback and tickets from our own folks but also from random contributors. We also continue pushing performance despite the fact that we are still a few times faster than other CDI containers. The new Oracle Java release cadence (half year updates to bytecode) causes quite some additional work. ## Health report: Community is doing fine. Small but active. Meecrowave sees some adoption and TomEE did some releases lately which both help with the adoption. So we actually do a lot of work for the TomEE community as well. Via the Meecrowave users we also got a few bug reports for CXF which we forwarded resp shipped patches for. We now wait for this release to ship the next MW release. ## Health report: Health is ok for such an 'old' project. Otoh we are now almost 10 years old and still have a lot of drive and there is no end in sight. OWB core gets a few maintenance improvements. We also probably gonna ship another CDI-1.2 (OWB-1.7.x) maintenance release. Meecrowave is also doing fine. Got a lot of attraction lately. Mark Struberg presented Meecrowave and TomEE at the JavaLand Conference. We are currently evaluating the use of the OWASP maven plugin to check for CVE vulnerabilities. If it works out then the next step would be to check whether this could be provided via the apache-parent pom for other projects as well. ## Health report: All fine. The OWB community also maintains a small server based as Apache Meecrowave subproject. Meecrowave consists of Tocmat9 + OpenWebBeans + CXF + Johnzon. ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: We have finished implementing the CDI-2.0 (JSR-365) specification. The spec and TCK are available under ALv2 thanks to JBoss. We are now successfully passing the TCK and expect to ship an OWB-2.0.0 release this month. Apache Meecrowave (an OWB subproject) is also progressing fine. We will likely ship a new version this month as well. After OWB-2.0 is out we will also upgrade Meecrowvave to CDI-2.0. ## Health report: The community is small but quite healthy. We are always keeping our eyes open for new committers. New people keep popping up on our lists and ticket system but there is a rather big gap between using OWB and providing deep patches it seems. ## PMC changes: - Currently 12 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Jean-Louis Monteiro on Wed May 28 2014 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 19 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Reinhard Sandtner at Fri Sep 26 2014 ## Releases: - 1.7.3 was released on Wed Apr 19 2017 - meecrowave-0.3.1 was released on Tue May 02 2017 ## Mailing list activity: - dev@openwebbeans.apache.org: - 71 subscribers (up 0 in the last 3 months): - 261 emails sent to list (177 in previous quarter) - user@openwebbeans.apache.org: - 98 subscribers (up 1 in the last 3 months): - 12 emails sent to list (18 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 44 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 31 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months

Aside from that it was a rather unhasty month. We expect high activity again when finally kicking off the work on CDI-2.0. We also supported the HotswapAgent community with creating ha-OWB support. This happened mostly on IRC. I would have preferred to channel this via the mailing list, but there was a lot of Questions back%&forth which was easier to do on IRC. I'll ask the involved guys to also create a bit of documentation on the mailing list and probably on our web page. ## Health report: All fine I think. ## PMC changes: - Currently 12 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Jean-Louis Monteiro on Wed May 28 2014 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 19 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Reinhard Sandtner at Fri Sep 26 2014 ## Releases: - 0.2.0 was released on Mon Jan 09 2017 - 1.7.1 was released on Mon Jan 09 2017 - 1.7.2 was released on Sun Feb 19 2017 - meecrowave-0.3.0 was released on Sun Mar 05 2017 ## Mailing list activity: - dev@openwebbeans.apache.org: - 71 subscribers (up 1 in the last 3 months): - 177 emails sent to list (66 in previous quarter) - user@openwebbeans.apache.org: - 97 subscribers (up 3 in the last 3 months): - 18 emails sent to list (9 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 28 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 29 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months

We started with a new subproject called Meecrowave. It is a mircroprofile server consisting of Tomcat9 + OpenWebBeans + CXF + Johnzon, all in 9MB. https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openwebbeans/meecrowave/trunk/ We decided to create an own subproject since we rely on other projects and thus we will see separate release cycles as from OWB core. We will also see a CDI-2.0 implementation effort soon as the spec (JSR-365, available under ALv2) is just about to get finished. ## Health report: Nothing special to report. We did not yet create separate tickets for Meecrowave as we did not yet have any release. ## PMC changes: - Currently 12 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Jean-Louis Monteiro on Wed May 28 2014 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 19 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Reinhard Sandtner at Fri Sep 26 2014 ## Releases: - Last release was 1.7.0 on Sun Sep 04 2016 ## JIRA activity: - 6 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 6 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months

We just did a release and are actively contributing to the upcoming CDI-2.0 specification. ## Health report: The project is a container library which is stable and actively used and maintained. ## Description: Apache OpenWebBeans is an ALv2-licensed implementations of the "Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform" specification which is defined as JSR-299 (CDI-1.0) and CDI-1.1 and CDI-1.2 (MR) specifications (JSR-346). We moved to the 1.6.x number as we removed some legacy SPI methods. OWB-1.2.x (CDI-1.0) and 1.6.x (CDI-1.2) are the versions we actively maintain. We plan to also implement CDI-2.0 (JSR-365) as OpenWebBeans-2.0.x at a later stage. ## Activity: Activity is really fine. We have a lot active contributors and had a very active time due to finishing the CDI-1.2 implementation. We also get lots of good feedback from new users lately. ## Issues: there are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## PMC/Committership changes: - Currently 19 committers and 12 PMC members in the project. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Thomas Andraschko at Sun Jun 15 2014 - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Reinhard Sandtner at Fri Sep 26 2014 ## Releases: - 1.6.0 was released on 2015-06-04 - 1.5.0 was released on Sun Apr 19 2015 - 1.2.8 was released on Sun Apr 26 2015 ## Mailing list activity: - dev@openwebbeans.apache.org: - 64 subscribers (down -1 in the last 3 months): - 406 emails sent to list (68 in previous quarter) - user@openwebbeans.apache.org: - 88 subscribers (down -1 in the last 3 months): - 104 emails sent to list (65 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 41 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 103 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
Apache OpenWebBeans 1.0.x till 1.2.x are ALv2-licensed implementations of the "Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform" specification which is defined as JSR-299 (CDI-1.0). OpenWebBeans 1.5.x also implements the CDI-1.1 and CDI-1.2 (MR) specifications(JSR-346) We plan to later also also implement CDI-2.0 (JSR-365) as OpenWebBeans-2.0.x. Board Issues There are no issues requiring board attention this time. Development Development of the first OpenWebBeans-1.5.x (CDI-1.2) version is already finished. We are finished with the SE parts and fully pass this part of the TCK. We are currently working with the Apache TomEE team to solve tte last few broken CDI-1.2 TCK JavaEE web-profile tests. Once we finished those tasks (probably in the next 2 weeks) we will ship a 1.5.0 release. Releases The last release was OpenWebBeans-1.2.7 on 2014-12-09 Discussions. Nothing which requires board attention. Community Community activity is fine. We've got quite a few bug reports and patches. Apache OpenWebBeans 1.x is an ALv2-licensed implementation of the "Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform" specification which is defined as JSR-299 (CDI-1.0). OpenWebBeans 1.5.x also implements the CDI-1.1 and CDI-1.2 (MR) specifications(JSR-346) We will later also also implement CDI-2.0 (JSR-365) as OpenWebBeans-2.0.x. Board Issues There are no issues requiring board attention this time. Development Development continues in trunk to implement CDI 1.2 as OpenWebBeans-1.5.x. We are finished with the SE parts and fully pass this TCK. We continue working with the Apache TomEE team to also pass the EE part of the CDI-1.2 TCK. Members of the community also actively contribute to the CDI-2.0 JavaEE specification (ALv2 licensed) which has been filed as JSR-365. New Releases OpenWebBeans-1.2.7 on 2014-12-09 We still have to upload to our dist after the SVN outage. We are also preparing to release owb-1.5.0-alpha-1 this month. Discussions. Nothing which requires board attention. Community Community activity is fine. Members of the community also actively contribute to the CDI-2.0 JavaEE specification which has been filed as JSR-365. New Releases OpenWebBeans 1.2.6 on 2014-06-22 Discussions. Nothing which requires board attention. We discussed that we will likely rename our trunk from owb-2.0.x to owb-1.5.x as there is a new CDI-2.0 specification and we would like to have the OWB numbers align with the spec version. Community Community activity is fine. We are working towards CDI-1.2 and are already passing more than 900 TCK tests. A short note: this is part of JavaEE7 but we don't have any licensing issues as both the CDI spec and it's TCK are ALv2 licensed. We are currently watching a new contributor who shipped very valuable fixes and is working on TCK issues. OpenWebBeans is an ASL-licensed implementation of the JSR-299: Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform which is defined as JSR-299. OpenWebBeans has graduated from the Incubator in 16, December 2009. --Summary-- * OpenWebBeans core project's Java EE library dependencies have been removed from it. All of the Java EE related capabilities are provided via plugin model. * Log4j library dependency has been removed from project, updated for using standard Java logging. * All of the specification requirements have been implemented. * Hard working for passing Web Profile TCK. * Problems with TCK has been issued to the TCK team. * Web Profile TCK has been passed. * Successfully integrated with Apache Tomcat 6.x. * Successfully integrated with Embeddable OpenEJB in Apache Tomcat 6.x. --Current Development Status-- * Working on minor bug-fixing. * Working for releasing a 1.0.0-CR1. --Future Development Plans-- * Release the 1.0.0-CR1 version. * Starting to integrate with Geronimo Server. * Working on JSR-299 TCK Full Profile. * We have to provide some user guide documentation. --New Releases-- * No new release. -- Discussions-- * No discussions. --Community-- * No new committers. * Increasing on community support * More involvement with dev@ mailing list -- Problems Integration with the Geronimo needs help from the Geronimo Server team because integration with the full Java EE server seems a more complicated than we think. Therefore passing the full Java EE TCK may not be possible in near feature. NOTE: In old reports we talked about standalone TCK. Actually official TCK does provide Web Profile TCK and Full Profile TCK. In old reports when we said standalone TCK, we removed the Web Profile and Full Profile Tests from the configuration. But now, we have passed the Web Profile TCK that also contains the standalone tests. Therefore we do not mention about the standalone TCK in this report.

OpenWebBeans has graduated from the Incubator in 16, December 2009. --Summary-- * Migration of Incubator to TLP has done. * Cleaning of Incubator side has done. * Started to work with JSR-299 TCK. --Current Development Status-- * Steadily coding on implementation to cover all specification. * Working on JSR-299 TCK-Standalone for being fully compatible. * Working on documentation project to improve guides etc. --Future Development Plans-- * Release a M4. * Starting to integrate with Geronimo Server. * Working on JSR-299 TCK Integration tests. --New Releases-- none -- Discussions-- * Talking about automated site deployment * Decided to pick hudson as the automated build environment for OWB --Community-- There were some discussions in the PMC-private about the new PMC members of the OpenWebBeans (that were voted by OWB PPMC/community, IPMC, and approved by the board) and about some of old incubator committers current and future status. PMC of the OWB has decided about issues as follows, * Enable committer status of Matthias Wessendorf. * Disable committer status of Mohammad Nour El-Din and email to him about fact. Because he expressed that he will not contribute more because of interests with other projects. * Disable committer status of Conny Lundgren and email to him about fact. He has never participated in community. He was just proposed as an initial committer of the incubator project.
Shane to follow up on committer removals.

OpenWebBeans will be an ASL-licensed implementation of the Contexts and Dependency Injection for Java EE Specification which is defined as JSR-299. OpenWebBeans entered the incubator in October 26, 2008. The following items have been made after the last report * We released the M2 version * We created additional documentation in the wiki page * We implemented full blown JSF + JPA + OWB application that shows usage of the OpenWebBeans * Gurkan Erdogdu replaces Matthias Wessendorf seat on the JSR-299 EG Belows are the next steps; * We will release the M3 version. * We will create more documentation in the wiki * We will continue to attract new committers into the project. There are some concerns related with the specification and its implementation, * JSR-299 specification has changed so much from the last draft.
