## Board feedback (comment from the last october board meeting)

mt: Reading the "2.0.7 release" thread on private@ it appears that the
project is dependent on a single committer for at least a sub-set of
regression tests. Could you explain this in more detail please. If there are
tests the community depends on, I'd expect to see those tests in an ASF
repository where any committer can run them.

These tests are not classic regression tests but tests on a large amount (>
500000) of files. The results are compared to the results of a previous
version and then committers investigate files with some extreme negative
differences or with new exceptions. The same is done (on an even larger scale)
for Tika, see [1] and [2]. The Tika tests need 4TB, and the files can't be
hosted on a public ASF repo or released under the Apache License because the
files largely derive from Common Crawl or the internet generally, and
copyright/licensing would pose a problem. There is a special vm to host the
described test and it is possible to grant access to all interested
Tika/PDFBox committers. Tilman already got his access bits in december, so
that at least one other committer is able to run those tests if needed. Maybe
others will follow.

- switch to java 1.6
- enhance the parser
- code cleanup
- enhance rendering
- enhance font handling
- add unicode support
- reduce memory footprint

The long-awaited new major release is still under construction and there is
still a lot to do. Most of the bigger parts are done so that we see the light
at the end of the tunnel.

Software Quality
----------------

There is an ongoing effort to improve PDFBox based on the analysis of
different tools such as SonarQube, FindBugs and others. Only last month we
reduced the number of issues as reported SonarQube by 20%.

their huge pool of test files pdfs (> 50.000 pdfs) to
- avoid regressions when preparing the PDFBox 1.8.8 bugfix release
- get clearance for updating Tika to use PDFBox 1.8.8
- find differences/areas for improvements comparing the new major release 2.0
to the current released version 1.8.x
- avoid regressions when switching the parser
- find areas for improvements/unsupported features and corner case pdfs not
exactly following the pdf specs

- improved font encoding (CID, CFF-fonts) when extracting text
- made the parser more lenient handling out of spec pdfs
- improved text extraction
- as the additional CMAP files from Adobe are now published under a
more suitable license (BSD), we were able to include them directly in
svn instead of downloading them as a part of the build process (see

- PDFBox (incl. FontBox and JempBox) 1.2.1 was released on July 11, 2010

Development:
------------

PDFBox 1.2.0 includes a lot of improvements and bug fixes. Because of a
significant performance regression we had to release Version 1.2.1 just
right after the last version.
As some people are interested in using PDFBox for text extraction on AndroidOS
and with Google Apps Engine, we are thinking about a more modular design so that
it is easier to adapt PDFBox for the usage on those runtime environments
with limited java support.

General Comments

There are no issues that require Board attention.

Due to christmas there was not that much traffic on the mailing lists in
december. But now people are returning.

JempBox

No new releases, no new issues.

FontBox

We are still working on integrating Villu's patch which adds support for
Adobe CFF/Type2 fonts to FontBox. It contains a lot of new classes which
have to be reviewed before we can add them.
Probably the CFF/Type2 support will give us an alternative to solve a major
issue with embedded true type fonts (PDFBOX-490).

PDFBox

We changed some external libraries to more recent versions.
We received a lot of promising patches from different contributors in the
last months. E.g., there were several patches from Mel Martinez including
notable performance improvements for the parser, which Jukka already added
to the codebase. As some of the other contributions include substantial
changes to the codebase, we have to ask the contributors to sign a CLA first.

Special Order 7H, Establish the Apache PDFBox Project, was
approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.

19 Aug 2009

Apache PDFBox is an open source Java library for working with PDF documents.
PDFBox entered incubation on February 7th, 2008.

The PDFBox project continues doing well. Perhaps due to to the summer break,
the development activities stuck a little bit, but the community itself is
growing.

A problem was detected with the naming of the previously released FontBox
and JempBox Maven artifacts. Project mentor Jukka Zitting worked around this
issue by copying the existing release artifacts to match the Maven metadata
(0.8.0-incubator instead of 0.8.0-incubating). It was noted that even though
a new release vote wasn't strictly necessary for such an action, it should
have been done only based on community consensus.

After solving most of the remaining blockers found during the license review
we will likely soon make a release of the main PDFBox library. PDFBox will
soon be ready to graduate from the Incubator.

Issues before graduation:

* Closing the last recently resolved legal issues found during the license
review
* Release PDFBox 0.8.0-incubating
* Increase community activity

Apache PDFBox is an open source Java library for working with PDF documents.
PDFBox entered incubation on February 7th, 2008.

The PDFBox project continues doing well. We released new versions of the
JempBox and FontBox libraries, and will likely soon make a release of the
main PDFBox library. The development activity is increasing and the
community is diverse. PDFBox will soon be ready to graduate from the
Incubator.

Issues before graduation:

 * Resolve remaining issues found during the license review
 * Release PDFBox 0.8.0-incubating

The past three months have been very good for the PDFBox project. Community
activity has increased notably, and we've added Andreas Lehmkuhler and Brian
Carrier as committers and PPMC members. The lengthy license review is nearly
finished and we're preparing for the first Apache release of PDFBox.

Issues before graduation:

 * Increase community size and activity
 * Resolve remaining issues found during the license review

The website has been set up. The license review is underway and has already
progressed quite far. The export control notification has been set up. These
tasks and most other tasks were all performed by PDFBox mentors (mostly by
Jukka Zitting). Sadly, there has been almost no participation by the initial
committers, yet, except for handling the license grants and CLAs.

On the user side, some questions don't seem to get answered. Not many
patches have reached us, either.

Issues before graduation:

 * Increase community size and activity
 * Finish license review
 * First Apache release

We have finally migrated all sources to Apache svn and set up the project
website at http://incubator.apache.org/pdfbox/. We also set up a CI build
using Hudson. Traffic is picking up on the user and developer mailing lists,
new issues are being reported through Jira, and there is initial discussion
about an incubating 0.8.0 release.

Software Grants have been received from Ben Litchfield and Daniel Wilson who
are the primary authors of the PDFBox, FontBox and JempBox software. There
have been a lot of small contributions (under the BSD license) by a number
of other people to the project and it was asked (see
http://markmail.org/message/zy6oweihmenqt6o4) on the legal-discuss list
whether the primary authors have "sufficient rights" to grant a license for
all of the code, or if we have to contact all the other contributors for
separate grants. Having received no response to the question on
legal-discuss we assumed that software grants from the primary authors was
sufficient.

We're discussing about what to do with the FontBox and JempBox codebases
that are included as subprojects of PDFBox. We might decide to merge them
with similar efforts in other Apache projects, most notably XML Graphics.

Issues before graduation:

 * Increase community size and activity
 * License review
 * Export control notifications
 * First Apache release

No progress last month as we're still waiting for the software grants for
the PDFBox sources. Once received, we'll finish the migration to Apache
infrastructure. We also need to do a more thorough license and export review
and work on migrating the web sites and the user community.

Issues before graduation:

 * Bring the sources to Apache
 * Increase community size and activity
 * Release once all licensing and export issues are resolved

The contents of the issue trackers at SourceForge have been migrated to
Jira. We've also created a pdfbox-users mailing list and plan to point
people from the SourceForge support forums to that list. The project sources
have not yet been migrated to Apache svn.

The basic project infrastructure (lists, svn, jira, etc.) is already in
place, and we are currently working on migrating the source code and
existing issues from SourceForge. We have also requested a user mailing
list to replace the current help forums on SourceForge.

PDFBox uses the Bouncy Castle crypto libraries for handling encrypted PDF
files. We will take care of export control issues as we proceed with
importing the PDFBox sources to Apache.

The PDFBox project has just entered incubation, and we're currently setting
up the project infrastructure. A question about the licensing of the JAI
dependency was voiced on the mailing list.
