Ripple

22 Apr 2015

Ripple is a browser based mobile phone emulator designed to aid in the
development of HTML5 based mobile applications. Ripple is a cross platform
and cross runtime testing/debugging tool. It currently supports such
runtimes as Cordova, WebWorks and the Mobile Web.

Ripple has been incubating since 2012-10-16.

Two most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Making a new release of Ripple
 2. Contributors and community engagement

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be

The community recently discussed the lack of growth in the project.
Some members felt that retirement of the podling was appropriate.
Others have stepped up to take over essential tasks and attempt to
build a community. We have agreed with mentors to review this situation
in 6 months. It is possible that Ripple is no longer important as its
functionality is potential being replaced by Cordova-browser. Our
original champion, Ross Gardler has also up to help evaluate the
situation. For Cordova-browser idea, there was also a discussion on
the mailing list.

The overall decision of what to do with Ripple as an ASF project, and
whether it can become a sub-project of Cordova is still under discussion.

Additionally, there are discussion threads proposing how to more tightly
integrate and use Ripple within Cordova.

At the moment the project is discussing its future. So far
almost no community could be grown and it is being discussed
if the project should become a sub-project of Apache Cordova.

The pros of this solution would be:

 - Cordova is a consumer of Ripple
 - Cordova is an active project and has a functional PMC

One con of this solution is that Cordova cannot guarantee
the success of the project. Also, the current Ripple code base
cannot be released, as there are some things to sort out (from
legal perspective, like the images cannot be redistributed).

Both communities have discussed this option and also the option
to move to GitHub. So far no agreement could be reached.

Intel has been doing a lot of work on the project (in a fork)- still
waiting for a possible contribution back into the ASF project.

Continuing Cordova 3.0 work to get to a stable, releasable product.

The Chrome Extension build target was removed altogether from the project,
in an effort to simplify and streamline the building/compilation of the
project into a usable application, and because the project has been
continually moving towards a [more feature-able] NodeJS backend, capable
of being run in any Browser.

 2. Increase the ripple community @ apache.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware

We are still working internally to be able to contribute the Ripple code to
ASF Looks like we might have to strip out all of the trademarks from the
project for the initial commit under the SGA, we will then commit them back
as a normal contribution under ASL2.0.

How has the community developed since the last report?

The community continues to grow slowly with some more community
contributions seen in the project's current home. We expect the community
to build up once the project is fully transitioned to the ASF.

Also some discussion and bugs are happening in the apache community.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Very little change here.
