openend, 11% more).

Activity seems lower all accross the board, based on Jira and GitHub activity.

Our sample application, the Sling Starter, was last released on October 23rd
2018 with version 11. The release process for version 12 has started on
Febuary the 2nd and we expect a release to complete within the following
weeks, pending resolution of issues that were discovered during testing.

## Community Health:
After a period a decreased activity the pace has picked up in Jira and Git,
notably with a 19% increase in contributors and 24% increase in commits.

The mailing list traffic on dev@sling.apache.org has dipped by 7%. Since that
traffic is conflated with Jira and Git notifications we do not think this is
something to worry about.

Business continues as usual with individual module releases. We are
considering releasing Sling 11 in the near future with Java 11 and preliminary
Java 12 support.

The "Apache Sling and friends" conference - adaptTo - is taking place in
Potsdam, Germany on 10-12 september, and we welcome the opportunity of meeting
in person and having a Sling hackathon.

Change the Apache Sling Project Chair

 WHEREAS, the Board of Directors heretofore appointed Carsten Ziegeler
 (cziegeler) to the office of Vice President, Apache Sling, and

 WHEREAS, the Board of Directors is in receipt of the resignation
 of Carsten Ziegeler from the office of Vice President, Apache
 Sling and

 WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache Sling
 project has chosen by vote to recommend Robert Munteanu (rombert)
 as the successor to the post;

 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Carsten Ziegeler is
 relieved and discharged from the duties and responsibilities of
 the office of Vice President, Apache Sling, and

 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Robert Munteanu be and hereby is appointed
 to the office of Vice President, Apache Sling, to serve in
 accordance with and subject to the direction of the Board of
 Directors and the Bylaws of the Foundation until death, resignation,
 retirement, removal or disqualification, or until a successor is
 appointed.

 Special Order 7B, Change the Apache Sling Project Chair, was

Change the Apache Sling Chair

    WHEREAS, the Board of Directors heretofore appointed Felix
    Meschberger to the office of Vice President, Apache Sling, and

    WHEREAS, the Board of Directors is in receipt of the resignation
    of Felix Meschberger from the office of Vice President, Apache
    Sling, and

    WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache Sling
    project has chosen by vote to recommend Carsten Ziegeler as the
    Successor to the post;

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Felix Meschberger is
    relieved and discharged from the duties and responsibilities of
    the office of Vice President, Apache Sling, and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Carsten Ziegeler be and hereby is
    appointed to the office of Vice President, Apache Sling, to
    serve in accordance with and subject to the direction of the
    Board of Directors and the Bylaws of the Foundation until
    death, resignation, retirement, removal or disqualification, or
    until a successor is appointed.

 Resolution 7A was approved unanimously by roll call vote.

Sling graduated as a TLP on June 17th, 2009.

Establish the Apache Sling Project

 WHEREAS, the Board of Directors deems it to be in the best
 interests of the Foundation and consistent with the
 Foundation's purpose to establish a Project Management
 Committee charged with the creation and maintenance of
 open-source software related to a scriptable web framework
 that uses a Java Content Repository, such as Apache
 Jackrabbit, to store and manage content for distribution
 at no charge to the public.

 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that a Project Management
 Committee (PMC), to be known as the "Apache Sling Project",
 be and hereby is established pursuant to Bylaws of the
 Foundation; and be it further

 RESOLVED, that the Apache Sling Project be and hereby is
 responsible for the creation and maintenance of software
 related to a scriptable web framework that uses a Java
 Content Repository, such as Apache Jackrabbit, to store
 and manage content; and be it further

 RESOLVED, that the office of "Vice President, Apache Sling" be
 and hereby is created, the person holding such office to
 serve at the direction of the Board of Directors as the chair
 of the Apache Sling Project, and to have primary responsibility
 for management of the projects within the scope of
 responsibility of the Apache Sling Project; and be it further

 hereby are appointed to serve as the initial members of the

Sling entered incubation on September 5th, 2007.

There are no issues which require Incubator PMC or board attention at the
moment.

Community

 * Lots of interest around Sling at ApacheCon in March, including
fruitful discussions with people from the Sakai community who are starting
to use Sling for a new version of their software, and starting to actively
participate on our mailing lists. Meeting people from the Apache Felix and
ServiceMix projects has helped build more community bridges around OSGi.
 * Vidar Ramdal was elected as a committer and PPMC member.
 * Juan Jose Vazquez Delgado, Sling committer since the start of
incubation, became more active, contributed a pipelining module based on
Cocoon 3, and is working on improved OSGi testing frameworks.
 * Mike Mueller was granted write access to our wiki as a "documentation
committer", iCLA on file.
 * In general, steadily increasing community activity with more
contributions, discussions and patches. Mailing list stats
(http://people.apache.org/~coar/mlists.html) also show a steady increase in
subscribers, now at 130 subscribers and average of 17 posts/day on the sling
dev list (there's no user list at the moment).

Software

 * Sling 5 has been released as of May, 13th, 2009.
 * Continuous integration builds have been activated on
hudson.zones.apache.org.

Issues before graduation

 * Sustained activity from at least two non-Day committers, along with
the new release and increased community interest and engagement, seems to
indicate that Sling should graduate soon.

 * With the new year, new activity has sparked around Sling and new

 * Sling will be the subject of various sessions at ApacheCon EU, and
interest in JCR in general is increasing, which should help Sling as well.

 * We're expecting to do a new release real soon now, after closing a few
outstanding issues.
 * Rory Douglas contributed OpenID authentication support for Sling.
 * Due to timing constraints work on enhancing the documentation on the
site has not gone forward yet.

which we see as a good sign, that this is finally taking off - but we're not

 * Lots of bug fixes and enhancements since the first release in June.
Therefore we are considering another full release soon.
 * Due to timing constraints work on enhancing the documentation on the
site has not gone forward yet.

project and is now called the "Apache Felix Web Management Console".
 * After the first release we have to take up a stab at our site and the

 * Sling saw an increased community activity over the last two months.
 * Present at Apache Con EU 08 with a BOF, a Fast Feather Track
presentation and several mentions in other talks.
 * Sling won the 5th prize at the JAX Innovation Award

Software

 * Sling enjoyed an intensive quarter of development moving towards an
initial release. Currently we are finishing up and taliating issues required
in the initial release.
 * Sling is participating in the GSOC program with Bertrand Delacretaz
mentoring Janandith Jayawardena developing integration support for the Scala
programming language.
 * Talks between folks of the Apache Felix project and the Sling project
took place which resulted in an agreement to prepare moving the Sling
Management Console to the Felix project.

  * We had a very active month with adding microsling and based on this
project developping and voting the new Sling API replacing the form
Component API. Currently we are migrating the project sources to the new
API.
  * Sling present at ApacheCon US 07 with a FeatherTalk and a BOF

  * microsling added to Sling as simple entry level framework exhibiting
the mechanisms of Sling. microsling was also used as a proof of concept for
the new Sling API and greatly influenced its evolution.
  * Two contributions of the community added to microsling and Sling:
Freemarker support by Padraic Hannon and Ruby integration by Shawn Anderson.

__Current Projects__:

   Since the last report three months ago the team has accomplished three
major milestones. In September we added two new committers, Eric Bradley
Lemings and Mark Brown. On October 16 we received the

Tuscany simplifies the development, deployment and management of distributed
applications built as compositions of service components. These components
may be implemented with a range of technologies and connected using a
variety of communication protocols. Tuscany implements relevant open
standards including, but not limited to, the SCA and SDO standards defined
by the OASIS OpenCSA member section.

Community aspects:

   * A proposal was put forward to graduate as a TLP but the IPMC raised
concerns about the level of diversity so the proposal was withdrawn while
these are addressed
         o It should be noted that Tuscany does currently more than meet
the Incubator minimum diversity requirements for graduation
   * Dims stepped down as a mentor, Paul Fremantle and Matthieu Riou took
his place
   * Voted Brady Johnson, Simon Nash, Amita Vadhavkar, Mark Combellack as
new committers
   * Good community involvement - users are answering mailing list
questions, providing patches, and being voted in as committers
         o Over seven hundred posts on the tuscany-user list in the last
three months, up over 300% since a year ago

Releases since last report:

   * Significant milestones were achieved with the 1.0 releases of Java SCA
and SDO which implement the v1.0 of the SCA specifications and v2.1 of the
SDO specification respectively
   * An 0.99 release of Java SCA was also done prior to the 1.0 release
   * Java DAS beta1 and beta2 released

Ongoing work:

   * A Java SCA 1.0.1 maintenance release is currently being voted on
   * A Native SCA, SDO and DAS release is in progress
   * The Java SCA 1.1 release contents are being discussed
   * Links with other Apache projects continue to be forged and lots of
exciting new features are being worked on!

to remove interfaces which are more or less duplicate to the Servlet API
used and extended by Sling.

Sling is a framework to develop content centric web applications based on
the idea of modularizing the rendering of HTTP resources. Sling entered
incubation on September 5th, 2007.

The Sling project has just started. The basic infrastructure (mailing lists,
subversion, issue tracker, web site) is mostly in place; the only things
still missing are one committer account and a wiki space. The software grant
for Sling has been received and the initial source code is now available in
svn.

It is a bit early, but we're looking forward to seeing the plan for how
Sling will move itself through to graduation.
