The path for release 3.0.0, the next major version, is almost done, being
expected later this month.
3.0.0-M1 and 3.0.0-M2 were released in the meanwhile.

We did reach out to press@ and drafted some communication to take out right
after releasing 3.0.0.

We remark that the work towards Syncope 3.0.0 had led to cooperation with Open
Source projects external to the ASF as Apereo CAS and Pac4j.

Aside from this work, there is still some onging maintenance activity on branch
2_1_X, which should lead to a new release 2.1.13 from there.

We finally cut the first release 3.0.0-M0 out of master branch, after going
through feature addition and major code refactory.

We are planning to reach out to press@ in order to get some media coverage
about this new major version.

We remark that the work towards Syncope 3.0.0 had led to cooperation with Open

## Description:

Apache Syncope is an Open Source system for managing digital identities in
enterprise environments.

## Issues:

There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:

While maintenance for 2_0_X and 2_1_X branches is continuing (2.1.4 and
2.0.13 were released recently), we have finally started the work on the master
branch around the new 3.0.0, with new components and features.

## Health report:

Discussions about new features and improvements keep appearing and being
followed up in dev@.

Users keep asking for basic and advanced features and customizations in user@
and are eventually getting supported by the community. Someone is offering
help on dev@ and was addressed to docs and tasks addressable as starting
points, we'll see if anything concrete is going to happen.

2.0.11 releases.

Two security issues were raised and managed (CVE-2018-17184 and
CVE-2018-17186)

We have been able to finalize and merge the work done in GSoC 2018.

Discussion around the features to work on next 3.0.0 needs to start on the

## Activity:

CVE-2018-1322 and CVE-2018-1311 were successfully managed by the PMC, and led
to the 2.0.8 and 1.2.11 releases.

Andrea Patricelli (PMC member) was officially nominated mentor for the GSoC
2018 project based on SYNCOPE-1220.

Maintenance work (with feature addition) keeps going onto the 2_0_X branch and
will likely lead to 2.0.8 release. The code on master branch has reached a
point where it could effectively be released as 2.1.0: discussion around this
point need to start on the dev@.

## Issues:

There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:

The last months were busy with fixes, new features and enhancements for the
stable branch, which led to the release of 2.0.3.

We received 5 final proposals for GSoC 2017 (more candidates triggered
discussions on JIRA or dev@, but did not finalize any proposal): 2 were not
considered upfront because we had only 3 mentors available, 2 were discarded
by the internal ASF ranking process, 1 was reject because the proposing
student was already accepted by another organization.

## Health report:

Discussions about new features and improvements arouse in the dev@ and still
progressing.

The increase of subscribers to both dev@ and user@, and the considerably
higher number of messages exchanged are both relevant indicators of community
health.

The number of proposals received for GSoC 2017 is another indicator that the
project looks attractive. The fact that we could not accept any proposal is
instead unfortunate, partially caused by the poor quality of some proposals
and possibly also due to the timing used in the internal process for
acceptance.

## Description:

Apache Syncope is an Open Source system for managing digital identities in

## Issues:

There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:

This quarter has been busy with final 2.0.0 release and related announcement
on the ASF blog. For the occasion, The New Stack published an interview with
V.P. Apache Syncope: https://s.apache.org/x18F

The new major release 2.0.0 incorporated some relevant contributions received
via Github, including SYNCOPE-808 which was successfully completed as part of
GSoC 2016. A pull request for SYNCOPE-809, which instead did not complete for
GSoC 2016, is currently under work.

About the Syncope PoC with infra, we are still on hold waiting for the
availability of a "playground zone" - see INFRA-10931 for details. It has been
quite a while now without any feedback or ETA, it might be the case to
consider retiring the proposal.

## Health report:

We have recently invited 2 new PMC members and they both accepted (this also
in response to mt comment from our last report).

## Description:
Apache Syncope is an Open Source system for managing digital identities in

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:
The activity level on user@ is still slowly growing, especially with new users
asking directions for milestone releases in preparation of 2.0.0.
The work towards 2.0.0 seems to be fruitful: we are finalizing the new
documentation and improving our Apache Camel-based provisioning features. There
is also an ongoing effort to provide Apache Syncope with identity
recertification capabilities.
The experience with Google Summer of Code is evolving: the Eclipse plugin
(SYNCOPE-809) is doing fine, is expected to be completed according to the
original schedule and is going to be part of the 2.0.0 release; the Netbeans
plugin (SYNCOPE-808), instead, failed the mid-term review but was submitted
anyway as incomplete pull request on GitHub.
About the Syncope PoC with infra, we are currently on hold waiting for the
availability of a "playground zone" - see INFRA-10931 for details.

## Health report:
The overall activity is consistently at good level: discussion on project
features and improvements are coordinated on dev@, contributions are regularly
accepted as pull requests on GitHub.
We have reported a new contributor in the team list website page
and elected a new committer (Matteo Di Carlo), who accepted.

## Description:
Apache Syncope is an Open Source system for managing digital identities
   in enterprise environments.

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:

The activity level on dev@ and user@ keeps growing slowly, with new
   subscribers.
We are still in the process of finalizing 2.0: M2 was released in this
quarter, M3 will be probably required before 2.0.0.

About the ongoing work, besides other fixes and improvements, we have
recently received the contribution of admin console UI translation in
Russian thanks to Dmitry Berezkin, which we also decided to report as
contributor in the team list website page. We are keeping an eye on
Dmitry to check if his support (about Russian translation, but also
other aspects) will stay and possibly increment, in order to consider him
   for committership.

We have been involved for the first time ever in the Google Summer of
Code, with two projects accepted: we need to take this as an opportunity
   to enlarge our developers community.

About the Syncope PoC with infra, we are currently on hold waiting for
the availability of a "playground zone" - see previous board report's
   comments and INFRA-10931 for details.

## Activity:

We are seeing an increasing activity level on both user@ and dev@ mailing
lists, especially related to the first milestone release cut in December
from 2.0.0, which provides a first essay of several new features.

The main focus is now set to complete the missing bits for 2.0.0,
especially about renewed documentation and admin console.

The PMC has briefly discussed in December about the opportunity to rotate
the PMC chair; such discussion brought anyway to confirmation of the
   current chair.

In December we have also started dicussing with Infra about the
possibility of a PoC for proving the effectiveness of using Syncope for
ASF corporate identity management but, after an initial interest - which
led to the creation of a new GIT repository for the purpose - things seem
   to have stalled.

## Activity:
New users keep popping up in mailing lists, asking for support with
various deployment scenarios, even for areas where traditional identity
management is not very common (say physical access control management) or
new geographic locations (South Africa, Colombia).

Presentation "Building Open Source Identity Infrastructures" was given at
ApacheCon: Core Europe 2015, showing Apache Syncope references, with good
feedback both during speech and afterwards (Twitter, LinkedIn, SlideShare).

While keeping bugfix activity on branch 1_2_X, it is fair to say that most
of current work is done on master targeting 2.0.0.
Someone has already asked, via user ML, if release date was already
planned but, since there is still a significant amount of work to be
completed, we will probably go for one or more intermediate milestone
   releases.

In the last months we are featuring an IRC channel, setup with help from
   Infra and properly archived.

There are no outstanding issues requiring board attention.

Community

The mailing lists' traffic has returned quite stable, the number of subscribers
to user@ and dev@ has again slightly increased if compared to last quarter.

New and coming users are asking for support and reporting bugs; in some cases
patches are also provided, fact that can constitute ground for discussion about
inviting new committers.

Besides bugfixing of current stable release from the 1_2_X branch, we have
started a deep code re-organization towards next stable release, which will
also include a consistent contribution we received lately about integration
with Camel.

The PMC has briefly discussed in January about the opportunity to rotate the
PMC chair; such discussion brought anyway to confirmation of the current chair.

Last committer addition (Giacomo Lamonaco) is dated January 2015.

Community

The mailing lists' traffic is again on rise, mainly because of recent release of
new major version 1.2.0; also the number of subscribers to user@ and dev@ has
slightly increased if compared to last quarter.

New and coming users are asking for support and reporting bugs; in some cases
patches are also provided, fact that can constitute ground for discussion about
inviting new committers.

We are currently in the process of fixing the bugs identified for 1.2.0,
planning the next maintenance release 1.2.1.

No actual plan has been made yet about next major release, except for some
sporadic discussions.
