Toree

16 Aug 2023

Toree provides applications with a mechanism to interactively and remotely
access Apache Spark.

Toree has been incubating since 2015-12-02.

### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:

 1. Increase active contributors

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
  None

### How has the community developed since the last report?
The community is working on wrapping up support for recent versions
of Apache Spark that has moved to use Scala 2.13.

We still see much of the users asking questions in the gitter channel
rather than using the mailing lists.

There is also a discussion started around retirement process, and
discussion is happening on the dev list.

### How has the project developed since the last report?
We need to wrap up the new Toree release supporting Spark with Scala 2.13

With the release of Apache Toree 0.5.0-incubating we have had a few

We still see much of the users asking questions in the gitter channel

### How has the project developed since the last report?

## Training
The Training project aims to develop resources which can be used for
training purposes in various media formats, languages and for various
Apache and non-Apache target projects.

Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21.

### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:
 1. Restart the Community
 2. Start doing releases
 3. Make Apache Training more well known

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
Currently the activity dropped to an all-time low. We even missed a number
of reports. We had a discussion on the mailinglist, if we should aim for
giving up, however the responses encouraged us to give it a new try and we
are currently trying to restart the project as there is indeed some
 interest in the project.

### How has the community developed since the last report?
It hasn't developed well, but we're hoping to change that with few players
 willing to participate more recently.

### How has the project developed since the last report?
We had one talk at ApacheCon NA 2022 and it was pretty well attended …
however not very many new folks showed up here.

### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:

 3. Make Apache Training more well known

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?

As mentioned in the previous reports, activity in the Training project has
been very low. There was nearly no mailing list activity in the first
 quarter, and virtually no commits.

### How has the community developed since the last report?

In April, one of the mentors (cdutz) launched a discussion on the mailing
list to see what the community wanted to do with the project. Together, we
brought up some ideas why the initial enthusiasm for Training materials
 has sputtered out.

Some of the ideas to make the project more relevant and build community
 include:

 - maintaining presence and visiblity as in-person conferences return,
 - encourage conversation and brainstorming about effective presentation
   resources on the dev website,
 - changing our focus to include self-learning resources for Apache
   projects, and
 - building and publishing Training web artifacts on the project website.

Even if it seems that we haven't yet found a clear and compelling niche,
the existing community is willing to continue work to see where we can
 improve.

### How has the project developed since the last report?

Specific work on showcasing web artifacts on the Training project website
has started, as a quick win to demonstrate the project value.

### How has the community developed since the last report?

Not much, the community has been trying to vote a release without much
 success.
I am starting to think that maybe the best solution might be to try to
 reboot
the podling and see if we can inject more new blood to the project and
 see if
it could make a change. I will think more about this and propose something
 for the next report.

Comments: I mostly agree with the assessment that Toree is near
graduation, but is not very active. The community has
demonstrated it is capable of making releases, adding
new committers & PPMC members, and welcoming new
members. My only criticism is how much discussion is
taking place on gitter rather than the dev list. That
makes it difficult to keep up, but I think it is
important to let this community hold discussions in
the forum that makes sense for it instead of trying
to make it fit the mold.

Does the community plan to do another release? It's been nearly a
year since the last. With a "slow, but steady stream of issues and
PRs" I suspect that some of those contributors would like to get a
released version with their contributions. For this community, it
may be a good idea to consider time-based releases to ensure that
contributors get to use their contributions in an official release.

### IPMC/Shepherd notes:

Toree provides applications with a mechanism to interactively and remotely
access Apache Spark.

Toree has been incubating since 2015-12-02.

### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:

  1. Active community
  2. Increase active contributors

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?

  None

### How has the community developed since the last report?

Toree will have a talk at ApacheCon Las Vegas where we will
talk about its overall status and current functionality as
well as try to attract more users and in particular contributors.

After the release of Toree 0.3.0 the community slowed down,
mostly due to Toree being somewhat stable and running on top
of Spark, where the public APIs in use are also stable.

The community needs to work on a release that supports Apache
  Spark 2.4.x and Scala 2.12.

Toree might be one of those low activity projects which have enough
active PPMCs (see last ppmc voting thread), and we might
start graduation talks based on these facts.

### How has the project developed since the last report?

Very little activity on the last few months after the
Toree 0.3.0 release, mostly around some compatibility
issues with Spark 2.4.x and Scala 2.12.

access Apache Spark. It enables interactive workloads between applications
and a Spark cluster. As a Jupyter Notebook extension, it provides the user
with a preconfigured environment for interacting with Spark using Scala,
Python, R or SQL.

Toree has been incubating since 2015-12-02.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Resolve LGPL dependency: This is in progress, and hopefully we will
have the dependency license changed to a license that is compatible
    with AL2.
 2. Make a release: nearing completion
 3. Grow a diverse community: We should put some emphasis on growing the
community and making it diverse (the rule is at least three independent
    contributors)

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

TOREE-262 - Progress on removal of LGPL dependency

How has the community developed since the last report?

 1. Active communication in mailing list and gitter with early adopters
 2. Still working on transitioning users from Spark Kernel project into
    Toree.
 3. More external contributions being made

How has the project developed since the last report?

 1. Contrinue working with JeroMQ community to further their transition
into MPL v2 and away from LGPL. 3 committers to go.
 2. Substantial effort in our build system to make Apache compliant
    releases.
 3. Addressing issues opened by community

Date of last release:

 None since incubation.

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

TOREE-262 - Progress on removal of LGPL dependency

How has the community developed since the last report?

 1. Work with Jupyter community to update their docker stacks to include
    the latest Toree
 2. Blog post at http://www.spark.tc/announcing-apache-toree/ to announce
    the incubation
 3. Active communication in mailing list and gitter with early adopters
 4. Work with Brunel project
    (https://github.com/Brunel-Visualization/Brunel) to make technology
    available on Toree
 5. Still working on transitioning users from Spark Kernel project into
    Toree.

How has the project developed since the last report?

 1. Source package have been renamed to org.apache.toree

    add capabilities
 5. Create Spark Streaming example notebook to feature many of the
capabilities of Toree in collaboration with Jupyter ecosystem
    (dashboards and widgets)
 6. Misc bug fixes and features
 7. Actively working with JeroMQ community to further their transition into
MPL v2 and away from LGPL.
