Training

16 Aug 2023

The Training project aims to develop resources which can be used for
training purposes in various media formats, languages and for various Apache
and non-Apache target projects.

Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21.

In June 2023, we started adjusting the project goals. Besides a pure focus
on content creation tools we have identified the need for two additional
aspects:

(1) For ASF processes some documentation exists, e.g.
https://community.apache.org/contributor-ladder, but the ASF member journey
is still a challenge for many new members, especially those with less
coding experience.
As a solution it has been suggested to provide training material for the
following problems:
* You've just graduated to a TLP. What are the challenges you will now face?
* New committer onboarding
* New PMC member onboarding
* New PMC Chair onboarding
* New board member onboarding

(2) Creation of some general recommendations/guidelines for:
 * managing/validation of training material contributions of arbitrary ASF
projects has been proposed.

We expand our focus now on the following aspects:

We have to work on strategies to increase the participation and the
visibility of the project and its goals.

Besides requests for contributions from individual contributors from other
Apache projects we want to show what the Apache Training project can offer
to those projects.

We should build on the assumption that synergy and network effects can help
us to increase the community around training and skill management topics.

### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:

  1. Improve the community participation (other Apache projects should
actively be linked to this project, since they "have the content")
  2. (Re)define the short-, mid-, and long-term goals of the project.
  3. Select an approach to handle non coding / non document related tasks
(e.g., community related activities on events)
  4. Create a strategy how this projects contributes to or is supported by
  other Apache projects
  5. Create a tutorial on how the tools provided by this project can be
  used to create own content
  6. Review current policies around contribution review and releases to
  find a pragmatic compromise

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?

The Training Project needs more contribution from other Apache projects,
hence a clear communication strategy for interlinking existing projects
with the Apache Training project is needed.

We need feedback from other Apache projects on the presentations and
  trainings developed till now.

In order to improve this collaboration we suggest to investigate the
status of other project’s documentation in a systematic approach,
especially with an eye on available training related material.

### How has the community developed since the last report?

  no changes

### How has the project developed since the last report?

Initial discussion regarding usage of content created/delivered by LLMs
  has been started.

In July, a first documentation inspection and fact extraction tool
  (Python script) has been provided.
  A pull request is open:
  https://github.com/apache/incubator-training/pull/87.

### How would you assess the podling's maturity?

Please feel free to add your own commentary.

Initial setup oft he project’s structure: Goals and strategy needs
  refinement.

Working towards first release: What type of artefacts to release is not
clear, due to unclear goals and strategy.

Community building: The community exists of a very small number of people
but is more or less invisible, as of today (April 2023).

Nearing graduation: Currently, we are far away from graduation.

### Date of last release:

### When were the last committers or PPMC members elected?

  November 2020

### Have your mentors been helpful and responsive?

Mentors have been responsive and helpful when reached out to.

### Is the PPMC managing the podling's brand / trademarks?

The name search process has not yet been started, as there is still time
to do that if and when graduation draws nearer.

The PPMC is actively monitoring usage of the Podlings current name on
  other sites.

The Podling is not directly affiliating with any sponsors donating
content and presenting an independent image on the webpage.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?

The topic of retiring the project has been discussed multiple times but
  someone (Mirko) from the community
has stepped up in a last effort to revive activities.
He's written most of the last two or three reports.

At least one mentor has mentioned that he'd step down if those attempts
  are not successful.

### How has the community developed since the last report?

Activity has started to grow since the last report.
We again failed to provide the report on time, but this will change soon.

Two persons joined our conversation on the dev-list (Eric and Rich).

### How has the project developed since the last report?

Creation of a ASF onboarding training module has been announced.

A tool for inspecting documentation in Github repositories (ASF projects)
which will lead towards automatic training related content extraction has
  been started.

PR activity continues on a low level since the last report.

### IPMC/Shepherd notes:
Dave Fisher - this project does not really release software and it looks
like it is becoming more of an ASF Member Project.
I think that since it plans to document process that is more
traditionally part of ComDev's mission or related to helping
projects. I would support either graduating into ComDev or to a TLP as a
project similar to Whimsy. I really do not see
  further Incubation to be helpful.

Nothing is happening, but we have been missing previous reports.
We'll try to keep reporting on time till we possibly reactivate

### Is the PPMC managing the podling's brand / trademarks?
Are 3rd parties respecting and correctly using the podlings

correct this? Has the VP, Brand approved the project name?

We haven't started the name-search yet, however we'll do that
as soon as we gain more activity.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?

Unfortunately, not much has happened since the last report in February.
We did add one new committer but other than that there has been hardly
 any activity.
While we'd like to blame the current situation in the world for this it
wouldn't be a fair assessment as we had the same problem in the previous
 period.

We still believe the idea of the Training project is a good one
and E-Mails are being responded to so the project is not dead.
It's a lack of time and dedicated resources that is at least partly
 to blame for this situation.
We hope that development will pick up again in the future.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
  - There currently is a lack of involvement by the PPMC in the project
which caused stagnation in mailing list participation and overall
  project progress.
The PPMC is currently taking steps to address this by focusing on
promoting new committers and being more involved again.
  - The current review and release process seems to be overly complex and
scary and hampers contributions. Discussions around relaxing this are
  ongoing.

### How has the community developed since the last report?
Activity on the dev list has declined since the last report, total number
of posts was November 37, December 13, January (to be updated) 84.

### How has the project developed since the last report?
  - We have refactored the Maven structure to make adding new projects much
easier by using an archetype, this should help make the project more
accessible to a lot of people.
  - ApacheCon themed templates are under development that will be available
  for speakers at future conferences
  - An introductory Hadoop slide deck was contributed and is currently
  undergoing review.

### How would you assess the podling's maturity?
There are currently some issues with this podling that we are working to
address, we believe that the issues are not yet critical and can be turned
around from within the community but want to make the board aware of this
  early on.

### Date of last release:

No new releases as ongoing discussions around the Pixabay license in
LEGAL-479 have been blocking releases for months now.

### When were the last committers or PPMC members elected?
Voting is currently ongoing to add a new committer to the projects roster.

### Have your mentors been helpful and responsive?
Mentors have been responsive and helpful when reached out to.

### Is the PPMC managing the podling's brand / trademarks?
The name search process has not yet been started, as there is still time
to do that if and when graduation draws nearer. The PPMC is actively
monitoring usage of the Podlings current name on other sites.
The Podling is not directly affiliating with any sponsors donating
content and presenting an independent image on the webpage.

### IPMC/Shepherd notes:

15 May 2019

The Training project aims to develop resources which can be used for
training purposes in various media formats, languages and for various
Apache and non-Apache target projects.

Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Agree upon underlying technology stack and architecture for training
 content
 2. Develop first training topic contents
 3. Set up our contribution process

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

 - no critical issues at this point in time

How has the community developed since the last report?

 - The project has been set up recently, so there is an initial
 activation/development towards a community.
 - The dev mailing list is active. The total number of posts in March was
 160 and in April 140
 - Total number of subscribers is 32 (25 in March)

How has the project developed since the last report?

 - The scope of the project deliverables and core procedures are still
under discussion (e.g. what makes a release?)
 - We have had our first few commits. They were for infrastructure (e.g.
 website) and repository structure
 - We have been approached by a few more people wanting to donate content
and we hope to be able to accept it soon
 - We actually have the first issue for an actual content donation (Apache
Way, ZooKeeper and Git) and hope to have it included soon, the first ones
will probably be slow while we work on processes and best practices
