### IPMC/Shepherd notes:
# Incubator PMC report for May 2025
The Apache Incubator is the entry path into the ASF for projects and
codebases wishing to become part of the Foundation's efforts.
There are currently 36 podlings incubating. In April, podlings executed
four distinct releases, and no IP clearances occurred. Several incubating
proposals have been discussed on the mailing list, and we have three
podlings called BifroMQ, Hamilton and PouchDB. The discussion around
SAFplus found some licensing and activity issues, and it's unlikely to be
accepted as an incubating project. Two people were added to the IPMC.
No podlings have retired, but a couple are talking about it. A few podlings
failed to report and will be asked to report next month.
Conversations on the list have been chiefly about releases and new
incubating projects. The discussion to perform name searches early at the
start of the incubator process continued. This originally came up as a
podling Fury needing to change its name close to graduation.
Several projects have been incubating for a long time. Toree looks to be
starting that process. Annotator has not replied and has failed to report
again this month. Livy is discussing what to do slowly. NLPCraft also
failed to report this month, and a roll call sent two weeks ago has
received no response.
There was also a discussion on selecting which reporting group a podling
goes in.

2. Had a significant growth (stars/forks at GitHub), but we want to gain
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
When establishing whether "Apache Wayang" was a proper name, it was
rejected because the 'wayang' word was wrong translated by Google
Translator as 'puppet' but instead of that means 'Imagination' or 'shadow'.
Because of the confusion and to avoid future problems, the process is under
"ASF's trademark counsel". The process started in January, and until these
days, the community did not get any status updates.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
The community growth is significant (according to Github); during the
last month, the main repository had been cloned at least one time per day
from a unique IP, and two persons outside of the committer registered had
been contributing to the code.
In addition to that, the community is presenting some projects for GSOC
and OSPP.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
The community is stabilizing the code for the new release, which will
include python API to create more options for users to join and use Apache

2. Release the first version of Apache Wayang under the umbrella of the
Apache Software Foundation
3. We have significant growth (stars / forks at GitHub), but we want to
gain more popularity and growth the community further
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
Apache Wayang is doing the first release, and it has many iterations;
almost all the -1 votes comes from license issues or related. Many members
of the community comment about the lack of documentation and examples in
the incubator page in a case like:
- set up well the license when you bring pieces of code from another
project.
- what happens when you bring code from another source.
- How need to be the headers if you bring the code from the repository
that it said is apache but does not contain headers licenses.
- How to need to be the license when you bring a code snippet or similar.
- and some another cornet cases that could happen.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
The community growth is significant (according to Github), the team
around Apache Wayang was present at the BOSS conference ’21 and the Apache
@home conference. We also signed an LOI with the TU of Berlin to cooperate
with “AGORA-EO: Indexing and Querying Earth from Federated Big Data
Archives”. The TU Berlin will add federated image processing to Apache
Wayang.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
As we had to import and rebrand a running project we needed some time to
rework the code base for fitting the ASF standards, which resulted in 8
release candidates. The incubator community spottet the issues we weren’t
aware of, which allows us now to present the first release of Apache Wayang
without a WIP disclaimer. We have chosen this route to make sure that the
project will always fit the standards, even when we had different views. At
the end all concerns and issues were solved, thanks to the Sheppards.

Technology wise the Podling is a productive state, which is also
reflected by cooperating with the TU Berlin. We see growing adaption in the
market, especially from companies with large data processing pipelines.

Comments: The team has done a great amount of work ruling out all
issues before the first release. They didn't want to go with the WIP and
wanted to get things right ... I liked that.

### IPMC/Shepherd notes:
Wayang is a cross-platform data processing system that aims at decoupling
the business logic of data analytics applications from concrete data
processing platforms, such as Apache Flink or Apache Spark. Hence, it tames
the complexity that arises from the "Cambrian explosion" of novel data
processing platforms that we currently witness.
Wayang has been incubating since 2020-12-16.
### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:
1. Educate the new PPMCs to be able to do Apache releases
2. Do our first Apache release
3. Grow the community
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
Until the moment of this report it was created and didn't have any issue,
because all the important issues got solved.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
The community of Apache Wayang presented at one conference and is
preparing another presentation this month.
- Apache Wayang participated in the BOSS@VLDB 2021 to present the
functionalities; you can find the presentation on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgD_1tPn9sc.
- Apache Wayang will present at the ApacheCon@HOME on September 22 at
18:00 UTC.
The community is also expecting new contributors soon because one
collaboration will start during the following months.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
During the last months, the community was fixing some errors, which
created a bottleneck, but it finally got solved. After solving the
blockage, the focus was cleaning the licenses in the code because some
libraries used by Apache Wayang were not license compatible with Apache
License. At the moment of this report, We are currently discussing
starting our first release.

### How has the community developed since the last report?
The community members are in the applying process to present in a few
conferences to show Apache Wayang to the Processing Platform Community and
other communities that could be interested in the project.
Also, different members of the community had meetings with possible
contributors, however, nothing is concrete until the writing point of the
report.
Additional to that the community is searching for more developers that
can be part of it.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
The main focus is the first release. The team is focusing on cleaning the
code, refactoring some parts and preparing the documentation. However, it
is taking more time than the estimated one, but the community members are
pushing to have it done as soon as possible.

### How has the community developed since the last report?
In the last month the community did a meeting where they created the most
important point to be focused on. The main focus points are the creation of
a Python API, SQL API and maintenance on the Core to be enabled to support
the new API's. The protocol of that meeting can be found it on dev@ list
Additional to that the community is searching for more developers that
can be part of it.
Also during the last month the issue with the software grant got solved
and we are waiting for the document to get signed.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
The project has moved the codebase to Apache's Git repos as well as
successfully setup the CI jobs. Also the Website is now up and running.
The team is finishing the process of renaming the project from Rheem to
Wayang, and is important to review that everything is placed in the right
spot.
