- Li Wang was added as committer on 2023-03-17

## Project Activity:
The most recent release is 3.8.1, which was released on 2023-01-30. There
is an ongoing thread about cutting a 3.9.0 major release, and minor releases
for the 3.7.and 3.8 branches.

## Community Health:
We have added a new committer, and the community is discussing the scope
and management of upcoming releases, major and minor. The dev traffic metrics
are low, and it is possibly due to the absence of release in the period. User
traffic has increased compared to the previous period.

- dev@zookeeper.apache.org had a 73% decrease in traffic

## Project Activity:
No release in the reporting period. Release branch 3.5 was made end-of-line,
and the community is now focusing on release branches 3.6 through 3.8. Release
3.7.1 is the latest stable release while we stabilize the 3.8 branch.

## Community Health:
We have been observing in the recent past projects that have historically
used ZooKeeper for distributed coordination moving to alternatives, such as
other coordination systems or their own Raft implementation. Project traffic,
consequently, has been dropping, although there is still sufficient interest
in maintaining the project as many applications still rely on ZooKeeper. In
this last reporting period, however, traffic was very low across multiple
metrics, see below. It is possible that it is at least in part due to summer
break, but we will regardless keep tracking traffic metrics to determine
whether this is a trend or seasonal. We will also continue to work with the
community to encourage more participation, especially from new contributors.

## Community Health:

There was a fair amount of activity for release 3.7.0, and after the
release, the communication channels have gone a bit quiet. We will keep
watching the trend of the community health metrics in the next reporting
periods.

3.6.3 and 3.7.0 are in progress

The community has focused on minor releases of the 3.6. branch
and it is also getting ready to release 3.7.0. 3.7.0 has had a release
candidate, but it has not passed the vote. The work towards cutting
these releases will continue in the next period.

## Community Health:

The project overall had more discussion and more commits as part
of closing on releases, but fewer GitHub PRs have been created
and closed compared to the previous reporting period. The difference
reflects the current community focus on releases.

3.6.1 was released on 2020-04-30.

## Community Health:
There has been an overall drop of activity according to the metrics
below, but the community has delivered successfully two bug-fix
releases. It is unclear whether that is of concern, but we will keep
an eye on the trend for the next report cycles.

- dev@zookeeper.apache.org had a 54% decrease in traffic in the past

- No new security vulnerability reported

## Community Health:
The community has worked on three releases in this period: two bug-fix
releases and one major release. The activity increase observed across
the dev list, issues opened/closed, commits and code contributions reflects
all the effort from the community to cut all these releases. It was certainly
a good quarter for the project.

Health indicators:
- dev@zookeeper.apache.org had a 13% increase in traffic in the
past quarter (1170 emails compared to 1034)
- issues@zookeeper.apache.org had a 27% decrease in traffic in

## Description:
Apache ZooKeeper is a software system for distributed coordination. It enables
the implementation of a variety of primitives and mechanisms that are
critical for safety and liveness in distributed settings, e.g.,
distributed locks, master election, group membership, and configuration.

## Issues:
No specific issues to the board.

## Membership Data:
Apache ZooKeeper was founded 2010-11-17 (9 years ago)
There are currently 26 committers and 14 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 7:4.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Andor Molnar on 2019-04-08.
- No new committers. Last addition was Enrico Olivelli on 2019-05-19.

## Project Activity:
No new releases during the reporting period. The latest releases are:

* 3.4.14 was released on 2019-04-01.
* 3.4.13 was released on 2018-07-16.

## Community Health:
The traffic on the dev list has dropped during the period due to us shifting
some of the notification traffic from dev to the notifications@ list. We had a
spike on the issues@ list due to bulk changes to Jira issues (version
updates). We also observed more traffic on the user list, which are general
questions about ZooKeeper. We did observe a good number of questions around
the internals (Zab and reconfiguration) of ZooKeeper.

* dev@zookeeper.apache.org had a 44% decrease in traffic in the past quarter
(1231 emails compared to 2169)
* issues@zookeeper.apache.org had a 3130% increase in traffic in the past

critical for safety and liveness in distributed settings, e.g.,
distributed locks, master election, group membership, and configuration.

## Issues:
No issue requires board attention

## Activity:
 - We have cut two releases in this period. 3.4.14 is a bug-fix release
of the 3.4 branch, while the 3.5.5 release is the one in which we transitioned
from beta to GA in the 3.5 branch. To recap, the 3.5 branch contains
reconfiguration work, which took a long time to stabilize, and it is in fact
a major milestone for the community.
 - Both releases fix the security vulnerability reported in CVE-2019-0201.
 - We have invited one committer to join the PMC, and offered committership
to two new contributors.

## Health report:
The community is stable at the moment, and there has been no significant
change to email and issue traffic. The community has been able to cut two
releases and increase the group of committers and the PMC. We are continuously
looking for opportunities to engage new contributors and offer committership
to the ones that make important community contributions. Overall, there
is no health concern.

## PMC changes:

 - Currently 14 PMC members.
 - Andor Molnar was added to the PMC on Mon Apr 08 2019

## Activity:
The community has released versions 3.4.12 and 3.5.4 during the
  reporting period:

  - Release 3.4.12: This release fixes 22 issues, including issues that
affect incorrect handling of the dataDir and the dataLogDir as reported
in the previous version of the 3.4 branch.

  - Release 3.5.4: 3.5.4-beta is the second beta in the planned 3.5 release
line leading up to a stable 3.5 release. It comprises 113 bug fixes and
improvements. The previous release of branch 3.5, release 3.5.3, added
a new feature ZOOKEEPER-2169 “Enable creation of nodes with TTLs”. There
was a major oversight when TTL nodes were implemented, and ZOOKEEPER-2901
  fixes the issue.

## Health report:
  - The community has released two new versions of Apache ZooKeeper, and has
  Successfully worked towards those releases.
  - The PMC has invited one new committer.

## Activity:
 - Community is working towards releasing 3.5.4. There are currently 10
   listed blocker issues.
 - Release 3.4.11 had a regression and 3.4.12 is on the way, we are ready
   to cut a release candidate.
 - There has been questions and work in the security list around
vulnerabilities, but there has been no disclosure in this period.

## Health report:
The project activity is currently at a low. It has been fairly stable
during the past year, but we are still suffering from the
fact that a good chunk of the project committers are busy with other
activities. Our goal has been to work with contributors to offer them
committership to guarantee that we have a continuous flow of
 contributions being merged.

## PMC changes:

 - Currently 13 PMC members.
 - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months
 - Last PMC addition was Michael Han on Wed Jun 21 2017

 - Abraham Fine was added as a committer on Tue Jan 30 2018

## Releases:

 - Last release was 3.4.11 on Wed Nov 08 2017

## Mailing list activity:

There has been a 15% and 35% drop in the dev and user lists,
respectively. This is significant and we attribute it to the
fact that we haven’t had enough committer activity in the
 project during this period.

 - dev@zookeeper.apache.org:
    - 512 subscribers (down -9 in the last 3 months):
    - 2052 emails sent to list (2426 in previous quarter)

## Issues:

No issue requiring board attention.

## Activity:

Key points:
- There has been no addition to the set of committers or PMC;
- The traffic of mailing lists has dropped both on
user and dev;
- There has been fewer jiras created and resolved compared to
the previous period;
- We moved from CMS to gitpubsub for our website. This required
code and process changes within the community;
- We are moving our documentation to use markdown instead of xml;
- We sent to Mitre the details of the vulnerability report
with identifier CVE-2017-5637 as requested. This security
issue has been considered moderate, and we have fixed the issue
in release 3.4.10;
- We have released a new bug fix version of the 3.4 branch;
- We continue to work towards making the 3.5 branch GA. It
is still beta due to the introduction of the reconfiguration
feature in that branch. We are currently working towards
producing a 3.5 release candidate.

## Health report:

The PMC has been working with contributors and committers to
get them to the point that both committership and PMC membership,
respectively, can be offered.

## PMC changes:

## Releases:

 - 3.4.11 was released on Wed Nov 08 2017

## Mailing list activity:

Traffic on dev and user have dropped by 18% and 15%, respectively,
compared to the previous period. The number of subscribers, however,
has slightly increased. We attribute the drop on mailing list traffic
to some key contributors being busy with work outside the scope of
the community.

## Activity:
There has been no significant change to the project status
since the last report. There has been no addition to the

not changed significantly, although the number of subscribers
has increased slightly and the overall number of messages
to the dev list has dropped.

## Activity:
We have completed two releases since March and the community is now working
towards the first stable release of the 3.5 branch. There isn’t much to
report other than the fact that there is work going on in the community,
see for example, mailing list and lira numbers below.

## Health report:
Number of subscribers and emails sent to the user/dev lists have grown
only slightly. The size of the community has been roughly stable, although
the slight growth is an indication of health: we still occasionally get
new joiners and the overall numbers aren’t dropping.

We are also working with various contributors in the community to get them
to a stage that we can offer them committership. We also have just voted a
new PMC member, but this PMC Chair hasn’t processed the new member yet.

## Mailing list activity:
Number of dev subscribers has grown by 2%, while the number of user
subscribers has grown by less than 1%. As I have explained in a previous
report, typically questions on ZooKeeper are asked in the dev list. In
fact, the number of messages sent to the user list is small compared
 to the dev list.

## Description: Apache ZooKeeper is a system for distributed coordination. It
enables distributed systems to implement a variety of primitives and
mechanisms that are critical for them to function, e.g., distributed locks,
master election, group membership, and configuration.

## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:
The community has been very active on the discussion of issues as we can
observe by the number of messages sent to the dev list. This number is
actually larger compared to the previous period.

We have also been receiving a few security reports over time (one in the last
period) and have needed to act upon them. Our community is still a bit
immature with respect to dealing with security, which mainly stems from the
fact that Apache ZooKeeper has traditionally assumed that it runs behind
secure boundaries, and only recently security has become of greater interest
to our users. We are making progress on learning how to deal with such
security issues and reports, though.

As for releases, we have been discussing two releases for a while, 3.4.10 and
3.5.3, but unfortunately, they didn’t happen in this period. The PMC expects
at least one release to happen in the upcoming period.

## Health report:
We have added two new committers and one new PMC member. The dev activity is
high, while the user activity is steady. We have not had high activity on the
user list in the recent past, mainly because of the nature of the project.
Users of Apache ZooKeeper tend to be interested in its internals and questions
are often sent directly to dev.

## PMC changes:

- Currently 12 PMC members.
- Rakesh Radhakrishnan was added to the PMC on Fri Mar 03 2017

## Committer base changes:

 - Michael Han was added as a committer on Tue Dec 20 2016

## Releases:

- Last release was 3.4.9 on Sat Sep 03 2016

## Mailing list activity:

The dev list activity has increased compared to the last period. There is no
special reason for it to happen other than interest of contributors and
committers being more available to interact with the community. As we
mentioned above, the traffic of the user list has been steady for quite a
while. Members of the Apache ZooKeeper community tend to ask questions
directly on the dev list as they are often interested in the internals and
contributing as well.

## Description:
Apache ZooKeeper is a system for distributed coordination. It enables
distributed systems to implement a variety of primitives and mechanisms that
are critical for such systems to function, e.g., distributed locks, master
election, group membership, and configuration.

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:
The focus of the community has been to lift the alpha label of the 3.5 branch.
We have solved the main remaining issue (ZOOKEEPER-2014) and we are now getting
ready to release 3.5.3, which is supposed to be the last alpha release of the
3.5 branch.

The 3.5 branch has a number of important new features,
including reconfiguration, which has been the main culprit for the stabilization
of the branch.

We have additionally been preparing a new release of our stable branch, 3.4.10.
It will include bug fixes and one contribution that improves security for
server-to-server communication.

Both these releases are very close to coming out.

We have organized a meetup at the Facebook HQ back in November.

## Health report:
There has been a good amount of activity on all lists, new contributors, and new
features proposed. There are potentially new committers currently being discussed
on the private list.

## Releases:

 - Last release was 3.4.9 on Sat Sep 03 2016

## Mailing list activity:
The activity on the dev list remained roughly constant while the activity of the
user list dropped. This is an artifact of questions now being asked on the dev list
mostly because they often involve more than just a clarification over the API. The
community has been favoring discussions on the dev list and slowly moving more
towards asking questions directly on that dev list. We don’t really make an effort
to have a clear separation between the two, although we suggest that API and use
case questions are better on the user list.

 - dev@zookeeper.apache.org:

## JIRA activity:
The number of issues created has been greater than the number of issues resolved,
creating a backlog. We need more committer cycles to help with the backlog, and
we are working on inviting new committers.

## Description:

 - Apache ZooKeeper is a system for distributed coordination. It enables
distributed systems to implement a variety of primitives and mechanisms that
are critical for such systems to function, e.g., distributed locks, master
election, group membership, and configuration.

## Issues:

 - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:

 - For the last period, there are two points to highlight:
   * We have had two releases, one for the 3.4 branch and another for
the 3.5. Releases of the 3.5 branch are still alpha, and the community
has been working hard to resolve the issues pending to make it stable
     (GA).
   * Traffic on the dev list and number of commits has increases significantly
compared to the last period. Traffic on the dev list has increased by
roughly 70% while the traffic on the commit list has increased by over
5x. Interestingly, the number of subscribers to the dev list has dropped
by 10 subscribers, which we attribute to natural churn.
## Health report:

 - The activity of the mailing list had dropped in the previous reporting
periods, but it has picked up again from the current numbers. We did some
effort to bring in new contributors by mentoring interested developers
(e.g., developers who showed interest on the mailing list, developers we’ve
met offline, meetups) and reached out to former contributors to help with
   closure on outstanding issues.
 - We have some potential committers coming, and we are considering offering
committership to such contributors after the next upcoming release: 3.5.3.
Their contributions have been strong so far.

## Releases:

 - 3.4.9 was released on Sat Sep 03 2016

 - user@zookeeper.apache.org:
    - 1178 subscribers (up 7 in the last 3 months):
    - 282 emails sent to list (267 in previous quarter)

 - The dev list traffic increased quite substantially from the previous period
due to our efforts to increase the development activity. Interestingly, the
number of subscribers dropped slightly, which we attribute to natural churn
(e.g., people move on to a different project). The traffic of the user list
has increased slightly, but not as much compared to the increase of the dev
list. We have been getting the same rate of questions compared to the last
   period.

ZooKeeper is a reliable coordination service for distributed systems.

We have released an alpha version of the 3.5 branch on Aug. 06, 2014.
This release includes important features such as reconfiguration. It fixes
a significant number of bugs and includes smaller improvements both in
the server and client. The community is now focusing on the stability of the
branch. There is also ongoing work to introduce SSL support. This is a
feature that has been long awaited.

Apache BookKeeper (subproject)

Bookkeeper is a distributed, reliable, and high performance logging
service. The project also includes Hedwig which is a highly scalable
Pub/Sub service built on top of ZooKeeper and Bookkeeper with strong
durability guarantees.

We released version 4.2.3 on the 27th of June. The release was focussed
mainly on bugfixes and addressing operational annoyances.

We are currently voting on the first release candidate for version
4.3.0, so we expect that to be released within the next week. This
release includes a lot of improvements to the bookie on-disk
performance, a new statistics framework, and protobuffer protocol
support along with numerous bugfixes.

We welcomed one new committer, Rakesh Radhakrishnan, during the last
period. Once 4.3.0 is released, we also plan to extend committership to
a couple more people. We will all seek to become a TLP at that point.

ZooKeeper is a reliable coordination service for distributed systems.

Trunk is still under development for an eventual 3.5.0 release. A couple
of important improvements on the way for 3.5.0:

- One important new feature in 3.5.0 will be the ability to reconfigure
a ZooKeeper ensemble. This feature was discussed a long time in
ZOOKEEPER-107 and we have converged and committed it;
- We are also focusing on a number of improvements over the code that
performs recovery. In particular, we are targeting an implementation that
avoids sending and taking unnecessary snapshots, which reduces time to
recover in the presence of crashes.

Also, the release is supposed to address scalability, jdk7 and openjdk support,
maven build/rel, testing and audit logging. There are other various patches
we are working on related code cleanup and refactoring.

We have released 3.4.6 on March 10, 2014. 3.5.0 release date is not defined
yet.

No infrastructure issues.

ZooKeeper is a reliable coordination service for distributed systems.

Bug-fix release 3.4.6 has been voted this week and we are in the process
of publishing it.

Trunk is still under development for an eventual 3.5.0 release. A couple
of important improvements on the way for 3.5.0:

- One important new feature in 3.5.0 will be the ability to reconfigure
a ZooKeeper ensemble. This feature was discussed a long time in
ZOOKEEPER-107 and we have converged and committed it;
- We are also focusing on a number of improvements over the code that
performs recovery.

Note that the status of releases hasn't changed since the last board report.
3.5.0 release date is not defined yet.

No infrastructure issues.

Pub/Sub service built on top of ZooKeeper and Bookkeeper with strong
durability guarantees.

We are currently working towards the 4.3.0 release, which is in its
final phase now. We project that it will be released early in April.
This release includes a lot of improvements to the bookie on-disk
performance, a new statistics framework, and protobuffer protocol
support along with numerous bugfixes.

We will also release a bugfix release on the 4.2 branch, 4.2.3, in the
next fortnight.

Infrastructure issues:
There is a minor issue with Jira. One of applications of BookKeeper is
journaling for the HDFS namenode. There has been cases in which we
needed to move jiras from one project to the other, but the current

Recently the new S4 project has been accepted into the Incubator -- it
is using ZooKeeper.

A discussion is currently under way regarding the possibility of
merging the recently open sourced "Curator" source base from
Netflix. These are client implementations of ZooKeeper "recipes"
(e.g. leadership election, group membership, etc...) which simplify
the act of using ZooKeeper in client side applications.

The authors of Curator are unwilling to join the incubator, this is
based on their past experience as well as some of the ongoing issues
they are seeing wrt projects entering the incubator. They have
expressed a preference to come in either as a subproject or as a
separate release artifact of the TLP.

service. The project also includes Hedwig which is a highly scalable
Pub/Sub service built on top of ZooKeeper and Bookkeeper.

The website, jira, and mailing lists are all setup and functional.

We have some dependencies on the next release of ZooKeeper 3.4.0. Once
that release goes out, we will make our first release as a subproject
of ZooKeeper.

Current work is mostly focused on code stabilization, scaling the
number of topics supported to millions, and JMS bindings.
