Special Order 7C, Terminate the Apache Buildr Project, was approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.
## Description: Apache Buildr is a build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. We wanted something that’s simple and intuitive to use, so we only need to tell it what to do, and it takes care of the rest. But also something we can easily extend for those one-off tasks, with a language that’s a joy to use. And of course, we wanted it to be fast, reliable and have outstanding dependency management. ## Issues: - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time. ## Activity: - We have released 1.5.8 in July 2019. We haven't had any activity since. This report is essentially the same as what we filed for a while now. I am starting a retirement discussion on the private list. ## Health report: - We still have a small PMC presence of 3 active members still able to vote releases. ## PMC changes: - Currently 7 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Peter Donald on Tue Oct 15 2013 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 10 committers. - Olle Jonsson was added as a committer on Wed Dec 12 2018 ## Releases: - Last release was 1.5.8 on July 14th 2019

We have one interesting discussion slowly going to fix the biggest flaw of Buildr by providing dependency resolution. ## Health report: The activity is slow, with 2 active committers. Very little activity on the user or dev list. We do see that the project is used at large. For example, the latest version has been downloaded over 57000 times since last September. Last time I reported we have started discussing on the dev list how to improve participation, and have detailed several items for the next release to engage better our users. This effort is still ongoing. ## PMC changes: - Currently 7 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Peter Donald on Tue Oct 15 2013 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 9 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Tammo van Lessen at Fri Aug 08 2014 ## Releases: - Last release was 1.5 on Fri Sep 23 2016 ## JIRA activity: - 2 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 6 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months

Special Order 7C, Change the Apache Buildr Project Chair, was approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. Our last release (v1.4.25) happened on April 4th, 2016. Development and community activity remains low, with only a handful of emails and Jira updates on average every month (due to low activity, activity tend to be "bursty" around releases). Our last committer/PMC change happened in October 2013. As reported previously, I (Alex Boisvert) have decided to step down as PMC Chair for the Buildr project. Following the recent vote (https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/5b3b645bd4bda001c4b9f749efea7e18aa41efa4342e0bfad45416fc@%3Cprivate.buildr.apache.org%3E), Antoine Toulme should become our next PMC Chair. I will send a resolution for the Board to approve/reject. Otherwise, we have no issues that require board attention

Our last committer/PMC change happened in October 2013. As reported in March, I (Alex Boisvert) have been thinking about stepping down as PMC Chair for the Buildr project. Following discussion, we have determined Peter Donald is the best candidate replacement, being the most active & sustained committer for the last few years. Next step is to vote on this and send the board a resolution. Otherwise, we have no issues that require board attention

AI Doug: pursue a report for Buildr
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. Our last release (1.4.15) happened in November. Development and community activity (mailing lists, bug reports, etc.) has been low since then. Our last committer/PMC changes happened in October. In February, we discussed and agreed to move to git as our primary version-control system, as well as "turning on" the improved GitHub integration (https://blogs.apache.org/infra/entry/improved_integration_between_apache_and). We have no issues that require board attention.

Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. We've made 3 minor releases (1.4.13, 1.4.14, 1.4.15) since September. Development activity has been fairly high compared to our average for the past 2 years, with about 140 commits including a few bug fixes, dependency updates and better support for Ruby 2.0. Collectively, these releases contained 8 external contributions. In October, we voted a new committer (Tammo van Lessen) and a new PMC member (Peter Donald) into the project. Our mailing lists remain relatively quiet. We have no issues that require board attention.
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. At the time of the last report, we were undergoing voting for the release of Buildr 1.4.12, which ultimately happened last May 4th. Development activity since May has been moderate, with 33 commits including a few bug fixes, dependency updates, better support for Ruby 2.0 and updates to our build/test scripts. The mailing lists remain relatively quiet. Our last committer addition dates back to October 2010. Our last PMC addition dates back to September 2010. Our discussion/vote to add Peter Donald (our most active committer in the past 2 years) to our PMC stalled back in May. This is my responsibility; I will resume the discussion and request another vote that hopefully will conclude with more participation. We have no issues that require board attention.

Report was not received and is expected next month.
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. Since the last report, we have released Buildr 1.4.11 that fixed a single regression in v1.4.10. We have also just voted for the release of Buildr 1.4.12; this release will contain 5 enhancements, 4 bug fixes and 2 minor changes. 3 of these were contributed by non-committers. The mailing lists remain relatively quiet. Our last committer addition dates back to October 2010. Our last PMC addition dates back to September 2010, though we are currently in the voting process to add Peter Donald (our most active committer in the past 2 years) into our PMC. We have no issues that require board attention.
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. Our last release (1.4.9) was on November 9th, 2012. We are in the process of voting for the release of Buildr 1.4.10 at the time of writing this report; this release should contain 8 enhancements, 7 bug fixes (one of which contributed by a non-committer) and 5 minor changes. The mailing lists remain relatively quiet. We have no issues that require board attention.
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. We released Buildr 1.4.8 on November 1st containing 7 enhancements, 7 bug fixes and a few minor changes from 5 different contributors/committers. We released a subsequent "hot-fix" release (1.4.9) a week later to address a non-deterministic bug affecting some users. Thanks to the work of Peter Donald (committer), we have continuous integration testing working again on Jenkins covering multiple versions of Ruby (1.8.7, 1.9.2, JRuby 1.7.0) and platforms (Linux, Windows) and our automated release scripts have been cleaned up. The mailing lists remain relatively quiet and we continue to receive contributions at a rate of about one per month on average. We have no issues that require board attention.
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. After almost a year without release, we finally got our release act together and published Buildr 1.4.7 (incl. 70+ fixes/changes/enhancements) on May 29th. Outside of a surge surrounding the release, the mailing lists have been relatively quiet in past 3 months. We continue to receive contributions at a rate of about one per month on average. We have no issues that require board attention.
Apache Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. Our latest release happened in June -- we were hoping for a release in November but follow-up efforts stalled due to time constraints and difficulty in getting tests working on all supported platforms. Our changelog currently shows about 70+ fixes/changes/enhancements since our last release. Subversion log show about 120 commits since June with commits from 4 different committers and patches accepted from 5 external contributors. Mailing lists activity has been relatively low in past 3 months, with a small surge in past few weeks. We have no issues that require board attention.
Buildr is a Ruby-based build system for Java-based applications, including support for Scala, Groovy and a growing number of JVM languages and tools. Our latest release happened in June -- we were hoping for a release in November but efforts stalled after discovering platform installation issues in a release candidate. The release will likely happen in February. The changelog currently shows about 50 fixes/changes/enhancements since our last release. Subversion log show about 100 commits since June with commits from 3 different committers and patches accepted from 3 external contributors. Mailing lists have quiet in the past 3 months. We have no issues that require board attention.
Our latest release happened in June and we're gearing up for another release probably in November. Our changelog currently shows about 50 fixes/changes/enhancements since our last release. Subversion log show about 100 commits since June with commits from 3 different committers and patches accepted from 2 external contributors. Mailing lists have been relatively quiet, with an average of 80 emails per month since July (compared to our 150+ historical average) and only a few threads diverging from the usual "I need help" question-response interactions. We have no issues that require board attention.
We released Buildr 1.4.6 in June which added support for Scala 2.9.0+ and included 18 other minor fixes and improvements. I expect we'll release version 1.4.7 in the September/October timeframe. Thanks to the work of Peter Donald and Antoine Toulme, our continuous integration tests are back working on Apache's Jenkins infrastructure. Mailing list has been somewhat active - higher than previously in 2011 but below 2010 averages. We still have a few outstanding contributions sitting in Jira that need some cleanup and/or committer time to integrate them. We have no issues that require board attention.
We released Buildr 1.4.5 in February shortly after our last status update; version 1.4.5 was a combination of small improvements and bug fixes. There's been practically no development activity since and things have been relatively quiet on the mailing list front. We still have a few outstanding contributions sitting in Jira that need some cleanup and/or committer time to integrate them. We have no issues that require board attention.
The project released Buildr 1.4.4 in mid-November in response to a blocking issue that appeared after installing Java Update 3 on Mac OS X. Beyond that, the last 3 months have been relatively quiet on the mailing list and in terms of development. Nonetheless, our changelog shows about 30 minor fixes/changes/enhancements and we're planning to release version 1.4.5 in the near future. There are two outstanding contributions sitting in Jira (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/BUILDR-259, https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/BUILDR-486) that most likely won't make it into our next release due to lack of committer time to integrate them.
We made two releases in the past 3 months, Buildr 1.4.2 and 1.4.3, both containing a number of bug fixes and minor enhancements. We also voted one new committer (Peter Donald) and one new PMC member (Antoine Toulme), bringing us to a total of 8 committers and 6 PMC members. The project team remains very diversified with no committers affiliated to the same commercial organization. User and dev mailing lists are healthy, we're seeing sustained adoption and contributions from the community. In terms of marketing, there was a Buildr presentation in September at JavaZone 2010 and there's a repeat planned in January at the San Francisco Java User Group. (Unfortunately, we had no representation at ApacheCon.) We also set up a new Twitter account to mirror questions asked on StackOverflow and we continue to use our Twitter account and CoTweet to follow comments made about Buildr on the Twittosphere. There are no current plans to make another release before the end of the year, although this may change based on user/developer motivation and discussion.
We finally released Buildr 1.4.0 in June, reaching the end of our 8-month development cycle integrating many new features. We also released Buildr 1.4.1 in July as a maintenance release to address what were mostly installation + platform-specific issues. Thanks to Antoine Toulme, we now have continuous integration builds running on Hudson covering many different platforms (Windows, Ubuntu, Native/MRI Ruby, JRuby, JDK 5+6). We're seeing sustained adoption and contributions from the community. In fact, we've just received a contribution to add Clojure support, reinforcing our language diversity ("polyglot programming") marketing story. We are planning another release (1.4.2) towards the end of August that will contain various fixes and minor improvements.
Approved by general consent.
We've seen continued increase in communication on both user@ and dev@ mailing list. We hit a record 364 emails across both lists in March. We've also seen sustained community participation in the form of fixes, minor enhancements to the codebase and new releases for 3rd-party extensions (e.g. buildr-iidea plugin). In March, we elected a new committer: Antoine Toulme. Antoine has been very active since elected and volunteered to handle the release process for 1.4.0. Our development activity has been, and still is, focused on getting Buildr 1.4.0 released. We had to invest significant energy to get all tests working on both JRuby 1.5 and the Windows platform and now it appears we've got all issues resolved. After a few release candidates, we expect Buildr 1.4.0 to be released in June. We have no issues that require board attention at the moment.
Roy to pursue a report for Buildr
We've seen continued activity on both user@ and dev@ mailing list since November, as well as a few small contributions (mostly in the form of bug fixes) from the community. We are gearing for a 1.4.0 release most likely during the first quarter that should contain enhancements that did not get finished or merged into 1.3.5 for lack of time/resources. We have no issues that require board attention at the moment.
Since August, there's been continued activity on both user@ and dev@ mailing list, as well as a steady stream of small contributions (mostly in the form of bug fixes) from the community. Most notable was our release of version 1.3.5 with a few new features and bug fixes at the beginning of October. (http://buildr.apache.org/CHANGELOG) We are planning a 1.4.0 release hopefully before the end of the year that should contain enhancements that did not get finished or merged into 1.3.5 for lack of time/resources. We have no issues that require board attention at the moment.
The project continues to gather momentum. During the last 3 months, the dev mailing list has been more active than before, while the user list has kept steady. A few additional plugins were developed by the community and are now listed our our plugins page (http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/BUILDR/Buildr+Plugins). The committers have an increasing number of active/pending Git branches containing improvements that require additional work, testing and/or documentation before committing to our code trunk. We are planning a 1.4.0 release later in August that should contain enhancements and bug fixes. We have no issues which require board attention at the moment.
Roy will follow up with the project on their use of git.
Since our March board report, we had two significant events: 1) We released Buildr 1.3.4, our first release out of the incubator and our first release not conducted by Assaf Arkin, demonstrating some independence and repeatability in our release process. The release itself is a balance of bug fixes and incremental improvements. 2) We elected a new committer (Daniel Spiewak) which brings our total number of committers to six and adds to the diversity to the project.
A report was expected, but not received
Since our February report, we had 12 new issues reported and 6 enhancements suggested; 12 issues were fixed, 4 based on patches from non-committers. We've been planning a 1.3.4 release since January but it has not happened yet. We have a volunteer for the release so the last hurdle is just making it happen. There were some discussions related to clarifying our usage of git and improving contribution/patch workflow with git. The discussion culminated by the contribution of a tiny tool called "gitflow" that facilitates the use of git while maintaining our Subversion repository as the system of reference. Still, post-commit git synchronization issues remain and manual merging is often necessary.
Migration to TLP project is now completed (INFRA-1829) and our web site has been updated accordingly. Since January 1st, we had 11 issues reported and 5 enhancements suggested, about half of which came with suggested patches. All of them are still open, pending committer review. We had planned to release 1.3.4 in January after the migration but the release has not happened yet. We are now gearing for a February release instead.
Mailing list activity was slow during December, probably due to the holiday season. A few people submitted patches for enhancements to Buildr, although some still lack test cases that would allow us to accept them. Our plugin ecosystem was born. An independent project called "buildr4eclipse" was announced to develop a Buildr plugin for building Eclipse plugins. The authors provided some helpful feedback on our plugin support. We're planning a 1.3.4 release in January and expect to work on migrating our infrastructure to a TLP project (INFRA-1829).
No report provided. Jim sent an email reminder.

Special Order 7B, Establish the Apache Buildr project, was approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.
Development We released Buildr 1.3.3 on October 16th, our 4th release in the incubator. Along with bug fixes and minor improvements, this release featured improved code organization for multi-language support. We also reorganized the documentation to have language-specific sections. Community In August Antoine Contal has been accepted as a new commmitter and was subsequently voted in the Buildr PPMC. Traffic on the mailing lists has been steady. A [http://www.nabble.com/Fast-Feather-Talk%3A-Apache-Buildr-td20022541.html Fast Feather talk] about Buildr was given during ApacheCon. Graduation We started discussing graduation in September and requested community feedback on the proposed resolution in October. In November, we initiated the [http://markmail.org/message/4bo627obdp3zdmhe vote from the Incubator PMC] and the vote passed.
Development We recently released Buildr 1.3.2, focusing strictly on bug fixes. 1.3.3 release scheduled for August will also focus on bug fixes and better error reporting. The bulk consists of issues reported, tested(!) and patched by community members. There's parallel work to add C/C++ support to Buildr, currently discussed on the mailing list, and we're seeing the first set of test cases for Eclipse tasks. Our little master plan to not accept patches without test cases may work out after all. Community In spite of our best efforts to send everyone on summer vacation, traffic is steadily picking up on the mailing list. Issues before graduation 1.3.2 cleared up some missing/mixed copyright issues that slipped past QA in earlier releases, and as of now we have no outstanding licensing issues.
Description - Buildr is a build system for Java applications written in Ruby. Date of Entry - Nov. 2007 Development Buildr 1.3 is now in feature freeze and we're working to fix outstanding bugs, complete the documentation and add more test cases. As indicated in the previous report, we worked on multi-language support, adding Scala and Groovy to the mix, and also using RSpec (Ruby) to test Java code. JRuby 1.1 is now an official deployment platform for Buildr, alongside MRI 1.8. Community Traffic on the mailing list is definitely picking up, as are feature requests and bug reports. Victor Hugo Borja joined as committer. Issues before graduation Legal has addressed our licensing issues specific to Ruby project, and we're ready to make a 1.3 release. From then it's business as usual: continuing to build a healthy community around Buildr.
Description - Buildr is a build system for Java applications written in Ruby. Date of Entry - Nov. 2007 Community --------- The buildr community is transitioning from its older infrastructure to the Apache one. The code has been imported and committers work on the Apache SVN now. The migration of users from buildr-talk at google groups to buildr-user is also happening progressively. Development ----------- Mostly bug fixes and small improvements. There's also work on JRuby support for which patches are submitted regularly from (for now) external contributors. Issues before graduation ------------------------ First we need to fix the IP issues surrounding the Ruby license and our Ruby licensed dependencies before any release can be made. A thread has been started on general@i.a.o and another one is still running on legal-discuss@a.o but we've had few answers so far. We'll probably send a proposition and see if that's acceptable.
