Open source system that enables the orchestration of IoT devices. iota has been incubating since 2016-01-20. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. An initial release of iota 2. Building a more active community 3. Consistency in the discussions on mailing lists/ steady flow of source code contributions Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? None How has the community developed since the last report? @crostofolini and @rafaelweingartner are working on integrating the Spring framework into iota (pull request 35) We are waiting on a jar file to be removed from the test suit so that an initial release of the software can be produced. (The jar file is related to iota tests - need committer to publish the source code - enabling us to remove the jar artifact enabling the initial release of the software). The initial release will proceed without the Spring Framework Integration. We will add this in a future release. Ticket's are in place for the initial release. How has the project developed since the last report? Interest in using iota (including the Spring Framework) outside the committer group The email reflectors for dev and users have become more active. New functionality was added to iota - global performers. How would you assess the podling's maturity? Please feel free to add your own commentary. Little has changed since these emails [1][2]. This pull request has been outstanding since February. [3] On the plus side a talk at ApacheCon has generated more interest. 1. https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/5fabdad2f6d32e9248f207010f59b7547 7098dddd43ee2b1ff4510ad@%3Cdev.iota.apache.org%3E 2. https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/f995bc2a9bc4b8df84feff2b979516a60 7e9841319ab68f7209346b0@%3Cdev.iota.apache.org%3E 3. https://github.com/apache/incubator-iota/pull/32 [ ](iota) Hadrian Zbarcea Comments:
Open source system that enables the orchestration of IoT devices. iota has been incubating since 2016-01-20. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. Getting a release out based on the current code base - will will commit to do that this quarter 2. Using the mailing list to discuss current and future development and needs - we commit more regular dialogue on the mailing list 3. Growing the community - we have been slow to get off the ground and need to put more effort in here - we will commit to do more outreach to grow the community Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? We realize we have been a little slow is getting off the ground as an Apache Project. I have spoken to Hadrian Zbarcea and explained to him why this has been the case. We are really committed to iota as a technology and commit to put more effort into making this a successful project. How has the community developed since the last report? No - we need to spend time on this and we will do so. How has the project developed since the last report? We have added global performers Date of last release: XXXX-XX-XX When were the last committers or PPMC members elected? They now realise this is an issue will hopefully correct. If not I question if Apache is right place for this project.

Building the developer community 2. Outreach at events outside the Apache ecosystem to inform and invite participation in the project 3. Getting an alpha release out by the end of this year based on the current code base. Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? None How has the community developed since the last report? Increased user interest with 4 individuals that are contributing in spurts of activity. This needs to become consistent. How has the project developed since the last report? Some improvements in the core engine, performers and the build process Date of last release: XXXX-XX-XX When were the last committers or PMC members elected? None but we are working on a proposal to add a new committer (a contributor that has made significant contributions in the last 6 months) Signed-off-by: [ ](iota) Daniel Gruno [ ](iota) Sterling Hughes [X](iota) Justin Mclean [X](iota) Hadrian Zbarcea Shepherd/Mentor notes: Justin Mclean: I have some concerns re progress of this poddling: - The on list PPMC activity is low and there may be discussions happening off list. - There is little progress towards making an Apache release. - I'm not sure there are 3 active PPMC members.
Open source system that enables the orchestration of IoT devices. iota has been incubating since 2016-01-20. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. Building a community now that we have completed source code upload of one for the main components of the system. 2. Moving towards an initial release before the end of the year 3. Working on IP clearance for the release Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? None How has the community developed since the last report? A number of individuals have made contributions some of which have been incorporated. We need to encourage more discussion on the dev list in the coming months. How has the project developed since the last report? We continue to improve (the Fey engine) we have added tests for the core engine and documentation for the engine and the component set. Good input from Anatole Tresch. We have three new contributors Barbara Gomes and two other individuals all have made a contribution this month. How has the project developed since the last report? We have uploaded source code for a major component of iota (the Fey engine). We have also uploaded a few basic components that can be used with Fey. We will be adding more components and we hope that individuals who download Fey can also begin the development of their own Fey components (called Performers). We hope they will share their Performers with the Community. We will be creating requests for the community to develop specific performers. E.g. an ActiveMQ performer. Open source system that enables the orchestration of IoT devices. iota has been incubating since 2016-01-20. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. Transitioning code, website and Jira issues to the Apache repositories. 2. Continuing iota website and code development using the Apache infrastructure. 3. Building an iota community via a variety of means including presentations at series of conferences beginning with ApacheCon followed by 7x24 Spring Conference, Data center Dynamics and others throughout the summer. We will work with our mentors to find other means of community building. Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? This project has been slower to start than we anticipated. Why? Based on experience in the field with we questioned the scalability of our original architecture. We made the difficult decision that we needed a more scalable architecture and we on the design of a baseline architecture. WE now feel we have a good starting point and with the help of the iota community we can move forward with. How has the community developed since the last report? Open source system that enables the orchestration of IoT devices. iota has been incubating since 2016-01-20. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. Overcome current technical difficulties. You might be asking what is happening with Apache iota. The initial architecture that we wanted to upload was not as scalable as we required it to be. Rather than upload an architecture that we wanted to fundamentally change we have been developing a new backend architecture and code based that implements a significantly more scalable solution using Apache, Spark, Spark Streaming and Cassandra. We are still using Python and Django for our APIs and authentication (session and token based). Consequently, you haven’t seen any activity on the Apache iota site and repository. This will be changing soon. Litbit (the contributing company whose business runs on iota) has been working around the clock to remake the backend using additional Apache components that makes the solution far more scalable. 2. Set up web site and import code. We will be setting up the Apache iota website to reflect the new architecture and uploading the initial source code as quickly as we can. 3. Promote Iota to a wider user base / grow the community. We are planning to promoting iota at an upcoming keynote being given by Scott Noteboom (Litbit's CEO). In addition we will be presenting iota at Apache Con in May 2016. Our goal in promoting iota will be to start building a community that will contribute to moving iota to it’s first release as an Apache incubator project Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? * None at this time. None yet, just getting started. Signed-off-by: [ ](iota) Daniel Gruno [ ](iota) Sterling Hughes [X](iota) Justin Mclean [X](iota) Hadrian Zbarcea Shepherd/Mentor notes: John D. Ament (johndament); Its a bit concerning to see that the project is starting off in a non-ASF way. Even if the code isn't quite right for donation, may be better to start off writing new code in the ASF repos. Justin Mclean (jmclean): I too have concerns about why they are developing outside of the ASF. I've contacted them a few times with a please explain and have assurances that this will be fixed. I'd suggest placing the podling on monthly reports for a few more months. Drew Farris (drew): 2 mentors active on the mailing list this month, but little activity as the team has not moved development to ASF. Concur with keeping podling on monthly reports.
iota is a scalable, secure and modular platform to interconnect IoT devices. iota has been incubating since 2016-01-20. Signed-off-by: [x](iota) Daniel Gruno [ ](iota) Justin Mclean [ ](iota) Sterling Hughes [x](iota) Hadrian Zbarcea Shepherd/Mentor notes: Hadrian Zbarcea (hadrian): iota just entered incubation, mailing lists and most of the infra are created. Committers are in the process of submitting their iclas and the code needs to be moved to the asf repository.
