In general, MetaModel is a fairly quiet and low activity project with just a few active contributors.

## Description: The mission of MetaModel is the creation and maintenance of software related to common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources ## Issues: There are no issues requiring board attention. ## Membership Data: Apache MetaModel was founded 2014-11-18 (5 years ago) There are currently 13 committers and 12 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 7:6. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members. Last addition was Arjan Seijkens on 2019-08-28. - No new committers. Last addition was Jörg Unbehauen on 2018-05-03. ## Project Activity: Low activity in general. New releases have been managed by Arjan Seijkens, not by the PMC chair, which is a nice change and good to get more involvement. ## Community Health: The community isn't very active and we're mostly just adding maintenance updates or smaller improvements. Whether this is a problem or not is not quite sure - the project may not evolve a whole lot more, but still offers value to it's users.

Last addition was Jörg Unbehauen on 2018-05-03. ## Project Activity: MetaModel 5.3.1 was released on 2019-09-13. A fairly big change/PR (#229) was just recently merged, upgrading to newer versions of ElasticSearch. This will break some existing behaviour due to upstream changes in ElasticSearch itself. Another sizeable change/PR (#230) is pending more review and agreement. It attempts to autodetect data types in our MS Excel module. ## Community Health: The MetaModel 5.3.1 release was the first release in a long time done by a new release engineer: Arjan Seijkens. This was a good exercise to go through to ensure that someone else than myself could perform the release. Other than that, most if not all communication recently has been about specific changes/PRs.

## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - We've added a few new committers to the project. - The project is in a low activity period in terms of code/issues. ## Health report: - We've been trying to promote people from casual committers to actual formal committer members. But it hasn't yet caused for any kind of increased activity it seems. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Dennis Du Krøger on Mon Sep 05 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 13 committers. - New commmitters: - Arjan Seijkens was added as a committer on Mon Mar 19 2018 - Jörg Unbehauen was added as a committer on Thu May 03 2018 ## Releases: - Last release was 5.1.0-RC1 on Mon Jan 29 2018 ## Mailing list activity: - It's been a period of quite low mailing list activity, as can be seen by the numbers below. - dev@metamodel.apache.org: - 78 subscribers (up 0 in the last 3 months): - 23 emails sent to list (139 in previous quarter) - issues@metamodel.apache.org: - 10 subscribers (down -1 in the last 3 months): - 12 emails sent to list (98 in previous quarter) - user@metamodel.apache.org: - 26 subscribers (up 1 in the last 3 months): - 1 emails sent to list (15 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 3 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 1 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
Report from the Apache MetaModel project [Kasper Sørensen] ## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - MetaModel 5.0.1 was released and has proven to be a stable library for the community. - The "Membrane" subproject was also released as version 1.0.0. But we haven't heard much from people using it. ## Health report: - We're in a period of rather low activity wrt. MetaModel development. There aren't any specific reasons for this that comes to mind. At this point it's not a big concern for the PMC, but we'll keep monitoring it. - We should consider inviting other individuals since there are some that have made good contributions to the code in recent months. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Dennis Du Krøger on Mon Sep 05 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - 4.6.1 was released on Sun Nov 26 2017 - 5.0.1 was released on Sat Dec 23 2017 - 5.1.0-RC1 was released on Mon Jan 29 2018 ## Mailing list activity: - As can be seen by the numbers below, the community activity seems to be down quite a lot... - dev@metamodel.apache.org: - 78 subscribers (up 0 in the last 3 months): - 132 emails sent to list (178 in previous quarter) - issues@metamodel.apache.org: - 11 subscribers (up 0 in the last 3 months): - 94 emails sent to list (148 in previous quarter) - user@metamodel.apache.org: - 25 subscribers (up 1 in the last 3 months): - 15 emails sent to list (0 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 9 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 12 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
Report from the Apache MetaModel project [Kasper Sørensen] ## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - We've just released MetaModel 5.0.0 which has been brewing for a long time. Whether the release is a big a success is too early to say anything about, but it's good to finally have it out! - The new "Membrane" subproject will get it's initial release soon too. We hope that this subproject will act as a showcase for what MetaModel's capabilities can be used to archieve. Membrane will be distributed as a Docker image too, making it very easy to install and try out. - An initial check was made to see how MetaModel works on JDK 9. Due to limitations in some of the supported datastores (old version of ElasticSearch, Neo4j) we still cannot do the complete build on JDK 9. This is something I think we'll have to address soon. ## Health report: - We're not seeing explosive growth or anything like that, but it seems to be a good time with decent amounts of activity from both recurring and new contributors. - Good signals in terms of new contributions coming organically and less company-sponsored. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Dennis Du Krøger on Mon Sep 05 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - 5.0-RC4 was released on Fri Aug 18 2017 - 5.0.0 was released on Wed Nov 8 2017 ## JIRA activity: - 17 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 12 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - Two milestone/RC versions of MetaModel 5.0 has been released. - A new subproject "Membrane" was founded, first release pending. ## Health report: The MetaModel project is generally doing much better now than previous two quarters. The two activity points above seem to have ignited a lot of new enthusiasm and traffic on the mailing lists. Also, new contributors are showing up with PRs on GitHub and good issue reports on JIRA. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Dennis Du Krøger on Mon Sep 05 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - 5.0-RC1 was released on Sat May 20 2017 - 5.0-RC2 was released on Thu Jun 15 2017 ## Mailing list activity: - The activity on the dev@ and user@ mailing lists have increased significantly. - dev@metamodel.apache.org: - 77 subscribers (down -1 in the last 3 months): - 228 emails sent to list (9 in previous quarter) - issues@metamodel.apache.org: - 8 subscribers (up 1 in the last 3 months) - user@metamodel.apache.org: - 20 subscribers (up 4 in the last 3 months): - 10 emails sent to list (0 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 13 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 10 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - Initiative started (recent week or so) to get an early version of MetaModel 5.0 out. - Activity on the main @dev mailing list remains lower than it was a few reporting cycles ago. ## Health report: - The low activity is still a bit concerning. The project has certainly slowed down and the work to make a 5.0 release seems to have lost momentum. As a reaction to this there is a proposal (from myself) to release it with less enhancements than what was sketched in JIRA, but enough to maybe spark the project into life a bit. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Dennis Du Krøger on Mon Sep 05 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - Last release was 4.6.0 on Fri Feb 03 2017 ## Mailing list activity: - As can be seen from the stats below, the trend doesn't look good and it seems that several core community members are spending less time on the project now than previously. - dev@metamodel.apache.org: - 78 subscribers (down -3 in the last 3 months): - 20 emails sent to list (79 in previous quarter) - issues@metamodel.apache.org: - 7 subscribers (up 0 in the last 3 months) - user@metamodel.apache.org: - 16 subscribers (up 2 in the last 3 months): - 0 emails sent to list (3 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 3 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 1 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - Apache MetaModel 4.6.0 released. - Activity on the main @dev mailing list is down from 148 emails sent to just 78. - A new @users mailing list has emerged, but not with a lot of activity in it. ## Health report: - The slowdown in activity is a bit worrying. It would seem that we are not attracting a lot of new community members and/or not doing a great job of promoting Apache MetaModel. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Dennis Du Krøger on Mon Sep 05 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - 4.5.5 was released on Wed Nov 16 2016 - 4.6.0 was released on Fri Feb 03 2017 ## JIRA activity: - 8 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 6 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - No major events recently, but bug reports, fixes and minor feature improvements appear steadily. ## Health report: - We see a bit less activity than usual from the "usuals" in the metamodel community. But external JIRA reports etc. seem to have picked up. ## PMC changes: - Currently 11 PMC members. - Dennis Du Krøger was added to the PMC on Mon Sep 05 2016 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - Last release was 4.5.4 on Wed Aug 03 2016 ## JIRA activity: - 17 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 13 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - A new (confluence) wiki is being set up to replace the current MoinMoin wiki. - A new SPI-based API have been added to MetaModel, making it possible to dynamically add new modules. We believe this approach makes integration with other projects such as Apache Calcite (and thereby also e.g. Apache Drill) much easier (see CALCITE-1304). ## Health report: - The 4.x releases occur at a steady pace, growing maturity. - The community does not seem to grow very much, but supporters are loyal. It is my impression that we lag behind on “marketing” activities to make the project more known. - The future 5.x release is ambitious in trying to broaden MetaModel’s scope by adding a RESTful HTTP API on top of the existing Java API. ## PMC changes: - Currently 10 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Ankit Kumar on Tue Nov 18 2014 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - 4.5.3 was released on Thu May 19 2016 - 4.5.4 was released on Fri Aug 04 2016 ## Mailing list activity: - We have added new mailing lists @issues and @user, but these have not yet been taken into good use. - dev@metamodel.apache.org: - 77 subscribers (up 3 in the last 3 months): - 1368 emails sent to list, a lot of which was SPAM from the JIRA SPAM incidents (226 in previous quarter) - issues@metamodel.apache.org: - 5 subscribers (up 5 in the last 3 months) - user@metamodel.apache.org: - 10 subscribers (up 10 in the last 3 months) ## JIRA activity: - 27 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 16 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months
## Description: Providing a common interface for discovery, exploration of metadata and querying of different types of data sources. ## Issues: - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time ## Activity: - Bugfixes and minor improvements are being worked on. - There is also a 5.0 branch being set up, focusing on major improvements with breaking changes and leveraging Java 8 APIs. ## Health report: - The project seems healthy enough, although it's in a bit of a slow period. Supporters are still active but there’s not a lot of big developments going on. ## PMC changes: - Currently 10 PMC members. - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months - Last PMC addition was Ankit Kumar on Tue Nov 18 2014 ## Committer base changes: - Currently 11 committers. - No new committers added in the last 3 months - Last committer addition was Dennis Du Krøger at Thu Oct 15 2015 ## Releases: - 4.5.1 was released on Thu Feb 11 2016 - 4.5.2 was released on Mon Mar 21 2016 ## Mailing list activity: - dev@metamodel.apache.org: - 74 subscribers (up 3 in the last 3 months): - 227 emails sent to list (486 in previous quarter) ## JIRA activity: - 17 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months - 10 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months

MetaModel is a data access framework, providing a common interface for exploration and querying of different types of datastores. MetaModel has been incubating since 2013-06-12. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. More contributors and committers to increase diversity of the community 2. More releases under ASF 3. Connect with other projects from Apache's ecosystem such as Apache Gora, Apache Flink Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? None How has the community developed since the last report? A few new people have started to work actively on the mailing list and contributing patches and new features. One of the new contributors, Alberto Rodriguez, had added new module to connect to ElasticSearch. Updated ASF incubator page to reflect current state. Updated MetaModel website to contain link on how to contribute. How has the project developed since the last report? Apache MetaModel 4.2.0-incubating was released on July 28, 2014. We are near of proposing to have new committer. None How has the community developed since the last report? A few new people have started to work actively on the mailing list. It is still a small community, and growth is needed. On the positive side we do see certain new individuals starting to contribute continuously to the project. We have been working on blogging, tweeting etc. to create more out-going communication about MetaModel. We feel that more of such activity is needed. How has the project developed since the last report? Apache MetaModel 4.1.0-incubating was released on Jan 21. This time with a new release engineer, which meant that the release instructions were re-iterated and updated. Communication on mailing list is improving and we see more diversity of requests. For instance, connectivity to Hadoop and HBase was previously not very active but now it's is taking a good share of the focus. Determine approach to technical documentation across different software versions Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? None How has the community developed since the last report? We finished our first release and are seeing some initial interest from users. Mostly there are interactions to add new features or connectivity to new types of datastores. For instance, it has been proposed to look into building connectivity to semantic web technologies, iRods, Apache Phoenix - and within the contributors group there has been some focus on adding HBase and Cassandra support. Discussions about community by-laws are not very active at this point. It does not seem to be top-of-mind for most community members, and also shepherd/mentor notes from January 2014 indicate that this is not important right now. We're improving on the point of registering JIRA issues and running patches through the review board. By now this is the approach taken every time, unless a commit is found to be very trivial. Still the core group of developers seems a bit small, but by focusing on broader connectivity and keeping the releases coming, we think we can attract a larger community to the project. How has the project developed since the last report? Apache MetaModel 4.0.0-incubating was released on Jan 21. We are working on new features for a 4.1 version. The 4.1 version will represent the point in time where Apache MetaModel starts to show significant new functionality when compared to the old eobjects.org MetaModel project. A new module for providing easy Spring framework integration has been implemented. Finishing touches are being made to a new module for connecting to Apache HBase. Various API changes are being planned and discussed. Many bugfixes and performance improvements has been implemented. Set better guidelines for procedures by setting community by-laws Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? None How has the community developed since the last report? We're working on making the first release under the Apache umbrella available. A first release candidate was rejected in the vote for technical reasons, but these where fixed by the second release candidate and a few JIRA entries to improve build-time validation. Various requests and questions are coming in through the dev mailing list. We believe this activity will further accelerate when our first release is available. We've been drafting a set of community by-laws, but open questions and discussions are still not settled, so this is only work-in-progress. How has the project developed since the last report? We've implemented various performance and concurrency related improvements to the working of MetaModel. Test suites have been improved to work properly on different locales, operating systems etc. Many minor changes to build configuration, license files etc., as a result of working towards a release. Two issues have caught my attention though: 1. I am not quite sure what motivated a strong drive towards having by-laws this early in the game. In my experience the focus on by-laws can, at times, put a damping factor on community growth. IOW, what I've seen in the past is that communities try to come up with by-laws when the usual process of consensus building starts to fail. Nothing actionable here for the project -- just keep this in mind. 2. The JIRA feels a bit empty for the project that has been developing for more than 6 month (grand total of 33 issues). At the same time the number of commits in the Git repo is on par with the development pace. What it tells me is that there's no strong correlation between JIRAs and commits. This raises a red flag of whether all of the changes that are committed get a proper community vetting before they go in. I couldn't find any traces of the review requests either: https://reviews.apache.org/groups/metamodel/ This in my opinion is a pretty big concern for the project.

Looking forward to setup CI builds under ASF infra Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? None How has the community developed since the last report? Ankit Kumar has taken the role of being release engineer for our first ASF release. A draft for bylaws for the project has been added to the wiki, we are discussing and finalizing the details. We are still not seeing a lot of involvement from new contributors, but expect that a release will give us more users and thus involvement from more newcomers. How has the project developed since the last report? The primary focus has been on making our first release under ASF umbrella. The work is coming along well and we have a practical TODO list of less than 5 points now. Date of last release: None When were the last committers or PMC members elected? We have merge mostly all issues from MetaModel old JIRA to ASF JIRAs that we want to solve for MetaModel. 2. We have removed the component of the software that require incompatible license with ASF 2.0 license (Microsoft Access module) 3. We have started discussion about first release under ASF. 4. We have updated the website (http://metamodel.incubator.apache.org) to adhere to ASF Incubator guidelines. Date of last release: None When were the last committers or PMC members elected? MetaModel is a data access framework, providing a common interface for exploration and querying of different types of datastores. MetaModel has been incubating since 2013-06-12. Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: 1. Roadmapping of our first Apache MetaModel release. Since the namespace change is going to break backwards compatibility of the project anyway, a couple of "old but breaking ideas" needs to be accepted or rejected. 2. Bring more diverse committers and contributors to the project. 3. We will probably be having several third party modules for MetaModel, because of (L)GPL dependencies. We want to figure out a good way to make this understandable for users (through website or similar means). Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? No How has the community developed since the last report? The pending INFRA work was finished in end-july, and we are starting to take it into use. We've decided to go for a Review-Then-Commit policy. We will allow lazy consensus after 3 days and a minimum of one +1 vote. There are currently no concrete plans for a release. We have some discussions and proposals of features on the mailing list which we want to settle on first. Since incubation we have not made any new appointments for either committer or PMC member. How has the project developed since the last report? The code has been moved from eobjects.org to Apache's Git server (https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator-metamodel.git). 5 bugfixes from the base release 3.4.4 was applied to our codebase as well. The namespace of the project has been changed to org.apache.metamodel (previously org.eobjects.metamodel). To aid migration, we've also implemented a helping facility for deserializing objects of the old namespace into the new. A performance optimization for the CSV module has been proposed and applied. The project now has a website (http://metamodel.incubator.apache.org/). The website is meant mostly as an 'appetizer', and we're planning to put lengthier pieces of information onto our wiki (http://wiki.apache.org/metamodel/), and if needed link to those from the website. Some initial content has been put on the wiki as well. The project contains a Microsoft Access module, which depends on the LGPL licensed Jackcess library. We are looking for a replacement dependency or to remove the module from the project. Bring more diverse committers and contributors to the project. Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of? How has the project developed since the last report? Since the Incubator accepted MetaModel, there's obviously been a lot of attention around the project. The tech lead for the project, Kasper, had posted some mentionings on TheServerSide.com and is putting the final touches on an article for InfoQ.com as well (expected published later this week). The base code has cut another release (http://eobjects.org/trac/query?milestone=MetaModel+3.4.4) We are still waiting for INFRA work (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-6404) to move the code to ASF git repo.
