WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache ODE project has
chosen by vote to recommend moving the project to the Attic; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Directors deems it no longer in the best interest
 of the Foundation to continue the Apache ODE project due to inactivity;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Apache ODE project is hereby

Special Order 7C, Terminate the Apache ODE Project, was
approved by Unanimous Vote of the directors present.

17 Jul 2019 [Sathwik / Daniel]

## Description:
Apache ODE is a WS-BPEL implementation that supports web services
   orchestration using flexible process definitions.

## Issues:
No response from PMC members for the board comments on April 2019 report,
nor there is any response for query on the way forward on the dev list
[https://s.apache.org/is2zk] that I had raised couple of days ago.

## Activity:
    No activity in the project.

## Health report:
 - There has been not much user/dev activity since the last reporting period
   April 2019.

## PMC changes:
 - Currently 15 PMC members.
 - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months.
 - Last PMC addition was Rafal Rusin on Wed Oct 01 2014.

## Committer base changes:
 - Currently 26 committers.
 - No new changes to the committer base since last report.
 - Last committer was Sathwik on Dec 23 2012.

@Daniel: Reach out for choice on rebooting or atticing the project

17 Apr 2019 [Sathwik / Daniel]

## Description:
Apache ODE is a WS-BPEL implementation that supports web services
   orchestration using flexible process definitions.

## Issues:
The ODE PMC had successfully voted to move the project to Attic in the
   Jan-2019 report.

   Vote: https://s.apache.org/11Fv Result: https://s.apache.org/NegQ

Board heldback passing the resolution asking the PMC to see if a new life
can be induced within the community around the new proposal. Mail from
   board: https://s.apache.org/6Oo3

PMC then held a discussion on the new proposal here
(https://s.apache.org/2e26). Couple of the PMC members did agree to
support the idea, but may not be actively involved in the development
activities. One of the PMC member did propose to take it to incubator
without going emiritus and he would be able to mentor.

PMC is not very clear on the way forward.

## Activity:

The contributor who has given the new proposal is developing the POC on
his personal github repo and he hasn't had the time to continue much as he
has been held up in his official work.

## Health report:
 - There has been not much user/dev activity since the last reporting period
   Oct 2018.

## Releases:

@Jim: Follow up with ODE PMC about options regarding rebooting the project in place or via the Incubator.

WHEREAS, the Project Management Committee of the Apache ODE project has chosen
by vote to recommend moving the project to the Attic; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Apache ODE project is hereby

 terminated; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Apache ODE PMC is hereby terminated.

Special Order 7B, Terminate the Apache ODE Project, was
 tabled.

16 Jan 2019 [Sathwik / Mark]

## Description:
Apache ODE is a WS-BPEL implementation that supports web services
   orchestration using flexible process definitions.

## Issues:
The ODE PMC has successfully voted to move the project to Attic. Vote:
   https://s.apache.org/11Fv Result: https://s.apache.org/NegQ

Project termination resolution has been added to the board agenda as item
   7B.

## Activity:
An user on the mailing list came up with a new project proposal here
   [https://s.apache.org/rSlq], it's a completely new approach and is a
definite canditate for the incubator as it gives an opportunity to build
user and developer base around the new concept.

As indicated in the last quarter report, we no more have an active user and
   developer base.

## Health report:
 - There has been not much user/dev activity since the last reporting period
   Oct
   2018.

## PMC changes:
 - Currently 15 PMC members.
 - No new PMC members added in the last 3 months.
 - Last PMC addition was Rafal Rusin on Wed Oct 01 2014.

## Committer base changes:

@Rich: reach out to the community to validate the plan to move to the attic and develop a new code base in the incubator

17 Oct 2018 [Sathwik / Mark]

## Description:
Apache ODE is a WS-BPEL implementation that supports web services
   orchestration using flexible process definitions.

## Issues:
Unknown if there is still a user community. There is no dev community
anymore. Thus, the decision that a move to attic makes sense. PMC is in
the voting period to move towards Attic [https://s.apache.org/cYNK].

## Activity:

## Health report:

18 Jul 2018 [Sathwik / Ted]

## Description:
Apache ODE is a WS-BPEL implementation that supports web services
   orchestration using flexible process definitions.

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:
It has been a silent period, not much of activity seen. The plan is to get
a release out of the trunk which has a lot of new things. Lack of support
from the community might see a very slow activity in the near future as
well. New contributors who had shown some interest in the past have been
   silent so far.

## Health report:
 - ODE is very mature and stable, however the interest in BPEL has decreased
significantly. Thus ODE's development is currently pretty much in
   maintenance mode.

We have released the new AngularJS based web console as on Nov 2016. The vote
for console release can be found here (https://s.apache.org/cdtH) and the
passing vote (https://s.apache.org/capW)

The release vote (https://s.apache.org/8RKP) for 1.3.7 was initiated in the
same month and had to request to restrain from voting as the json.org
licensing issue was raised across Apache projects.

It has been found that the old web console has some implementation from
json.org. We are in the process of solving it.

## Description:
Apache ODE is a WS-BPEL implementation that supports web services
   orchestration using flexible process definitions.

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:
 - Although we've been working on the next release for some reporting
periods already, we decided to open the release again and add two
new features: a) a new standalone distribution, based on an embedded
TomEE and b) to incorporate the new angular based console app, which
still needs some love but is already way better than the old one.
That's why we're delaying the release again.

## Health Report:
  - ODE is very mature and stable, however the interest in BPEL has decreased
significantly. Thus ODE's development is currently pretty much in

Apache ODE (Orchestration Director Engine) executes business processes
written following the WS-BPEL standard. It talks to web services, sending
and receiving messages, handling data manipulation and error recovery as
described by your process definition. It supports both long and short living
process executions to orchestrate all the services that are part of your
application.

STATUS
In this reporting period we made some progress towards a 1.3.7 release and
improved our Jenkins CI builds. We also got three GSoC applications and will
enter the ranking phase soonish.

RELEASE
No releases in this reporting period.

DEVELOPMENT
We started developing a new monitoring console for ODE, based on AngularJS,
talking directly to the SOAP API. The console code is now in a separate git
project so that we can enter an independent release cycle. There are still
some minor issues to fix before we can make the first release. We have also
improved our Docker-based CI builds to that we can now reliably build our
branches again. We basically use Docker to avoid installing build dependencies
on Jenkins. Instead, we mount the working copy into the docker container and
run the build process within this container. This also ensures that the
environment is always under our control.

RELEASE

No releases in this reporting period.

DEVELOPMENT

We started developing a new monitoring console for ODE, based on AngularJS,
talking directly to the SOAP API. The goal is to replace the current console
and then continuously improve the console. Besides of this effort, we continued
working on bug fixes and some infrastructure improvements (mainly docker-based
CI).

STATUS
In this reporting period we made some progress towards a 1.3.7 release and
had a very successful Google Summer of Code project. Fang Zhen could complete
his project on time and provided a valuable contribution, the OModel
refactoring, that is now subject to be merged into our master branch. Due to
two memory leak reports, we decided to delay the 1.3.7 release and move it to
the next reporting period.

STATUS
Although this reporting period was rather quiet, we made some progress
towards a 1.3.7 release. We brought a couple of improvements into the code
base, which fix some bugs, improved the build/ci system etc. Unfortunately
we had to fail one of two GSOC students because a lack of dedication or
skills. The other student, Fang Zhen, is making very good progress and
came up with a decent solution for one of your major issues, the OModel
serialization problem. We're looking forward to merge his work soon into
trunk and make a beta release from that. The goal to end the 1.3.x stream
and continue with trunk, which allows us again to add new features.
We expect to cut a 1.3.7 release within the next reporting period.

We were able to successfully cut our 1.3.6 release, the vote is still open but
it looks like everything is fine and we're looking forward that it will be
published in this reporting period.

RELEASE

Apache ODE 1.3.6 has been released (hopefully).

DEVELOPMENT

Main development focus was on the release. We have fixed 42 bugs in total,
some were bug fixes, some were minor to major improvements, some addressed
compatibility issues with recent ServiceMix versions. We have also addressed a
bunch of issues that have been discovered by Betsy, a BPEL standard compliance
testing tool, provided by the University of Bamberg. Besides of this, the
JACOB refactoring has been pushed forward as well.

DEVELOPMENT
Some patches have been applied to trunk and the upcoming
1.3.6 release branch. We identified some issues with the current TX
manager configuration which we plan to fix for the next release. We're
also planning to upgrade the Axis IL to Axis 1.6.x and look into
clustering support for ODE.

COMMUNITY
Our new committers Sathwik Bantwal Premakumar and Hadrian

the 1.3.x branch as a stable branch and to address the root of the
backwards compatibility issues in trunk, which is supposed to become
ODE 2.0 then. Once this is stabilized, we will focus on providing a
migration tool for process instances from 1.3.x to 2.0.

## Release
No release to report in this quarter.

## Development
No significant development progress to report. We have migrated the
Confluence-powered website to the ASF CMS.

## Community
We had some very interesting discussions about a potential
collaboration at ACEU. As a result, we now have a new committer,

up our virtual processing unit. We have also voted Sathwik Bantwal
Premakumar to be a committer. He provided a lot of great patches.

== Status ==
The development speed of ODE has decreased over the last reporting
periods but we have always seen some indicators that that will change
for the next reporting period as we could vote in new committers, had at
least one release per year etc. Since it did not get better, we think
this is the right time to bring this concern to board's attention. ODE
is still a mature and powerful BPEL engine, I'd say it is widely
deployed and the best available OSS BPEL solution. It has been adopted
by several companies, and my impression is that most development efforts
currently go into the maintenance of their ODE forks. We started a
discussion on private@ode.a.o to figure out how we can revive ODE and
how we can lower the bar to get more contributions back.

== Release ==
Together with the community we identified a couple of performance
issues. We are in progress of releasing ODE 1.3.5 as a maintenance
release that improves the performance of ODE's XPath processing in some
scenarios by factor 10. Also around 30 bugs have been fixed and we were
working with the ServiceMix community to align ODE 1.3.5 with SMX 4.3.
The RC is currently being tested and we are looking forward to start the
release vote next week.

== Development ==
Most development efforts have been put into the analyzing and optimizing
performance issues, compatibility with ServiceMix, bug fixing and build
process tweaks. We are planning to continue with our refactoring roadmap
in the next quarter: Finalizing the JPA refactoring, solving backward
compatibility issues (i.e. supporting evolution of OModels and runtime
states) and backporting features (extension activities, process context)
from our experimental branch.

The ODE PMC voted a new PMC chair, the proposed resolution should be
attached.

 Release

We've released a new build out of our stable branch, including
incremental improvements and bug fixes: ODE 1.3.4.

 Development

Besides bug fixing main development activities have been spent into
reshaping the main development branches and into build and release
processes. We have decided to declare our stable 1.x branch to be our
main development branch. The former trunk is now our experimental
sandbox and we will be continuously back-porting features and
improvements from this branch to trunk. First backporting efforts
have already been started, such as for extension activities and
transactional scopes.

 Community

Several new committers have been voted in this quarter: Antoine
Toulme, Anurag Aggarwal, Terry Mueller, David Carver and Aaron
Anderson. We're pretty pleased at the influx of new blood and all
the renewed activity that comes with it.

Jim noted with pleasure the "new blood" comment.

21 Apr 2010 [Matthieu Riou / Roy]

There are no specific issue relevant to the board at the moment.

Release

A new release of ODE's stable branch, mostly including bug fixes and
smaller improvements is under preparation. We should have a 1.3.4
soon.

Development

The JPA support clean-up to merge Hibernate and OpenJPA modules has
been pretty active this quarter and is getting close to being ready
in the 2.0 branch. Beside this, new development activity has been
mild this quarter, concentrating mostly on fixes.

Community

Jeff Yu has been voted as a new committer and PMC member.

20 Jan 2010 [Matthieu Riou / Greg]

There are no specific issue relevant to the board at the moment.

 Release

No release to report this quarter.

 Development

Beside usual bug fixes, 3 major area of work this quarter have been the
implementation of ODE's process context specification, clean up of our
JPA support to merge Hibernate and OpenJPA modules and the development
of a Maven build.

 Community

HISE, an implementation of WS-Human-Task Specification, has entered
incubation with ODE as the sponsoring entity. As such we expect some
cross-project work and a possible extension of the ODE community.

21 Oct 2009 [Matthieu Riou / Roy]

* Release

This quarter we've released both a new minor release of our stable
branch (ODE 1.3.3) and a new beta for what will be the future of ODE
(2.0-beta2). The last step before going with a final release of the
2.0 branch is migration steps from older versions.

* Development

Development is still going strong, both with new developments and
bug fixes.

* Community

Many news on the community side. Rafal Rusin, elected committer last
quarter is now part of the PMC. JBoss has made public their use of
ODE as their BPEL engine in RiftSaw, which is a nice confirmation of
ODE's position as the "reference" BPEL implementation.

In this year's Google Summer of Code programme, we got two proposals
and students accepted and funded by Google. Buddhika Chamith de Alwis
successfully completed his project aiming at integrating ODE with
BPELunit to improve our test harness. Denis Weerasiri worked on a
Web-based BPEL debugger for Apache ODE.

Finally, a new proposal for a BPEL4People project is coming to the
incubator and we hope for much more development on that side.

Release

We've released a new incremental version of our stable branch, ODE 1.3.2.
Now only bug fixes should be committed there and we'll be concentrating
more and more on stabilizing our 2.0 branch.

Development

Mostly incremental features on 2.0, both on a few remaining parts of
BPEL that weren't supported and on useful extensions.

Community

We've voted in a new committer, Rafal Rusin, who had already been active
for a while. He has been ramping up his contributions and we all felt he
fully deserved the status of committer at this point.

15 Apr 2009 [Matthieu Riou / J Aaron]

There are no specific issue relevant to the board at the moment.

Release

We've released ODE 2.0-beta1, the first beta from the redesigned trunk.
It's now used by various Eclipse projects. We're also working on
another and probably last 1.X release.

Development

We're gradually transitioning from the stable 1.X branch to the trunk,
adding new features almost only on trunk. Overall development is still
very active and we continue to see quite a few interesting
improvements.

Community

Several GSoc of code projects are shaping up (at least 3).

21 Jan 2009 [Matthieu Riou / Justin]

= Release =

We're currently getting really close to have our next stable branch
released as ODE 1.3. This is mostly a continuation of our 1.X branch
with many bug fixes and stability improvements.

In parallel, a new re-designed branch is maturing and will, we hope,
shape ODE 2.X. Because of the many differences we'll probably have a
beta or release candidate cycle before coming up with final releases
on this branch.

= Development =

We're exploring new directions, like RESTful BPEL, a simple process
execution language and a RESTful task manager written in Rails. We're
also continuing developments around BPEL, improving performance, QoS
and standard supports.

= Community =

We voted another new committer, Sean Ahn. We've been consistently
adding fresh blood to the project in the past few quarters and it's
been great to see all that new development taking place. The flow of
user-submitted patches is also increasing which is a good sign for the
future.

15 Oct 2008 [Matthieu Riou / Bertrand]

There are no specific issue relevant to the board at the moment.

 Release

Version 1.2 has been well received and we're now gearing toward both
a maintenance release (version 1.3) focusing on bug fixes and minor
enhancements.

Our development branch (version 2.0) is stabilizing and we'll be
doing a beta cycle or two before the official release. Main
improvements are the infrastructure to support transactional and
reliable invocations, versioning of the runtime (to retain backward
compatibility with processes compiled with earlier versions) and more
performance in the persistence layer.

 Development

Our new effort to come up with a simplified process execution
language is coming along nicely. Some basic constructs already work
and even if there's still a lot to develop, it's taking shape.

 Community

Lots of activity on the community side this quarter.

Our Google Summer of Code project contributed by Milinda Pathirage
has been a great success. The management console that he developed
has been included in our tree and Milinda has been elected committer
by the ODE PMC.

We voted in a new committer, Karthick Sankarachary, who's been very
active during the past months by contributing several important
improvements. We've also voted Alexis Midon in our PMC (he was a
new committer from last quarter).

16 Jul 2008 [Matthieu Riou / Bertrand]

Release

We've released a 1.2 that adds a few major features, like the
support for WSDL HTTP binding, some REST extensions, endpoint
configuration and external variables that can be persisted in
user-defined database tables. It also includes quite a few bug
fixes and small improvements. The release is very fresh and we're
still announcing it here and there and gathering feedback (which
seems good so far).

Development

After this release, we're going to focus on backward compatibility
of our trunk, so an upgrade path can be available for the next
release (2.0). Then we should be able to provide more advanced
functionalities like transaction propagation and reliable messaging.

Community

We've voted in a new committer, Alexis Midon, who has contributed
the HTTP binding code and other features. He intends to continue
his contribution and we're very happy about this new help.
We also have a GSoC project going for a web management console
developed by Milinda Pathirage. It's coming along nicely and we
already have some nice result after mid-term.
There has been an increase in mailing list traffic as well as the number
of issues (Jira) reported along with an increase of submitted patches.

16 Apr 2008 [Matthieu Riou / Sam]

There are no specific issue necessitating the board attention at the
moment.

Release

We've released 1.1.1 which was mostly an incremental release as
expected. Users feedback has been good. We're now preparing for a 1.2
but we'll need to stabilize our trunk first.

Development

The most significant feature addition this quarter is the support for
the HTTP WSDL binding. We're also going to start stabilizing trunk
that includes support for transaction propagation, reliable messaging
and BPEL extensions (with a cute Javascript extension example).
Parallely we're progressing slowly but surely on some research
projects for a simplified orchestration language and workflow.

Community

The HTTP WSDL binding has been contributed by a newcomer and we're
monitoring him closely to eventually vote him as a committer if his
involvement persists. A couple of users also have been reliably
submitting bugs and patches, which could eventually lead to something
more significant.

16 Jan 2008 [Matthieu Riou / Geir]

There are no specific issue relevant to the board at the moment.

* Release

A minor release 1.1.1 should be issued in the coming days, we're
currently voting on it. We've also working on backward compatibility
of our trunk to release it later on without too much hassles for our
users.

* Development

The main feature addition has been "external variables" that allow
storing BPEL variables externally to the process engine (in a DB, or
via REST calls). We also have a specification to support REST with BPEL
by adding a few extensions and we're planning on implementing it soon.
Support for BPEL extensions has been finalized. Work on SimPEL, our
simple process execution language, has started, the language is now
almost settled after very interesting discussions.

* Community

Nothing really new on the community side,. We see new users arriving
regularly which is healthy. All the discussions around SimPEL have been
pretty passionate but never conflicting, giving good karma to all our
dev community.

Approved by General Consent.

17 Oct 2007 [Matthieu Riou / Greg]

There are no specific issue relevant to the board at the moment.

* Release

We're preparing a minor release 1.1.1 to distribute the small fixes
we've made here and there since 1.1.

* Development

There's been a lot of discussion in the community around the
simplification of ODE. Our problems is mostly that WS-BPEL is a
complex standard layered on top of WSDL that's another complex
standard (without mentioning SOAP and WS-I). We'd like to introduce
a small and simpler DSL (that we dubbed SimPEL) that should be more
or less equivalent to BPEL but much easier to write and far less
verbose (no XML whatsoever). Along the same lines we're going to make
an embeddable version of ODE that can be instantiated directly from
Java code.

* Community

Tammo van Lessen has been voted in the ODE PMC.

Approved by General Consent.

19 Sep 2007 [Matthieu Riou / Geir]

Since last month we've made an important 1.1 release. There are no
specific issue relevant to the board at the moment.

* Release

We've released our first official release since we graduated and our
second all time release. So far it's been well received with only the
usual couple of minor bugs. We're planning a 1.1.1 to address those.
We've been pleased to learn that Lomboz (Objectweb) has added support
for simple deployment on ODE using this release. Paul Brown has also
written a nice tutorial for InfoQ.

* Development

The main development branch has been merged into the (now unstable)
trunk. This is a longer term development to improve the support for
different communication styles (blocking, asynchronous, reliable and
transactional). Tuscany integration is underway as the BPEL SCA
implementation is being developed. We've also been discussing security
and easier embedding.

* Community

Nothing much on the community side except more users interested by the
new release.

Approved by General Consent.

General
-------
Following up on our graduation from the incubator, all the tasks to
establish us as a TLP have been completed. It's been pretty quick,
mostly thanks to the infra team, Niclas and Henri. So the web site,
SVN and mailing lists have been migrated, the PMC has been established
as well as the chair. The foundation files have also been updated. So
far we're all happy campers, no particular issue to bring to the board
attention.

Release
-------
We're preparing our first out-of-incubator release (1.1), in terms of
development it's going to be mostly a bug fix release with some rough
edges polishing. It should be our most stable release ever.

Development
-----------
Meanwhile, we have started a new development branch named BART to
better address messaging integration and quality of service aspects
(BART = blocking, asynchronous, reliable and transactional). This
represents significant refactoring of the integration layer and will
be the basis for our 2.0 release.

Community
---------
Nothing groundbreaking on the community side as we've been mostly busy
with graduation. The mailing lists traffic keep on picking up and we
try our best to support new users. Our new committer, Tammo, is I
believe going on very well with the rest of the team, owning massive
quantities of karma by fixing tests.

Approved by General Consent.

Special order 7B, Establish the Apache ODE project, was approved by
 Unanimous Vote.

20 Jun 2007

Apache ODE is an implementation of the BPEL4WS and WS-BPEL
specifications for web services orchestration. ODE entered incubation in
March 2006.

Beside regular development, the principal improvement in ODE for these 3
past months is our first incubator release. We've been able to come up
with a valid release after several release candidates reviewed by the
ODE committers and got voted by the IPMC. We've also received a very
nice contribution from Kelly Thompson for our website with good looking
graphics.

A steady stream of patches is also coming in (see [1], [2] and [3] for
example) and we have a few leads to bring in more committers (Tammo Van
Lessen and Jim Alateras) after a couple more patch contributions.

We've raised some concerns about the absence of a real PPMC for ODE to
the IPMC, result of the lack of activity of some of our mentors. We'd
been handling all decisions as a community with all active committers
before but our PPMC didn't reflect it. As a result, Niclas Hedhman has
volunteered to become a mentor for ODE, Dims and Paul being both active
mentors and the PPMC is elected now. Many new PPMC members have now been
voted in, and we're ready to move on.

As a community, once the PPMC issue settles down, we believe we're ready
for graduation.

iPMC Reviewers: jukka, yoavs, jim, noel

Apache ODE is an implementation of the BPEL4WS and WS-BPEL specifications
for web services orchestration. ODE entered incubation in March 2006.

Our activity during these past 3 months:

 * Finished the transition from Hibernate to OpenJPA. This is almost done
now with most of our scenarios working perfectly. We have to thanks the
OpenJPA guys for that!
 * A lot of efforts on reliability and performance, plus a few additional
features here and there, like improved JBI support (in addition to Axis2).
 * The user mailing-list has definitely been picking up, with more and more
interesting questions.

The focus for the coming trimester is going to be very strong on making an
incubator release now that all our IP issues have been cleared. It should
really help us on our way out of the incubator through to golden door of
success! The pending issues are:

 * Making an incubator release, which should be able to complete this
trimester finally (and should help us for the next point).
 * Attracting more committers to encourage diversity.

iPMC questions / comments:

 * jukka: Sounds good!

----

20 Dec 2006

Apache ODE is an implementation of the BPEL4WS and WS-BPEL specifications
for web services orchestration.
ODE entered incubation in March 2006.

Activity related to incubation:
 * Thanks to Cliff Schmidt, we've finally cleared the BPEL4WS and WS-BPEL
specifications intellectual property and patents issues. See
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-legal-discuss/200612.mbox/%3c90
6BAFB9-4176-42D8-B9D3-1ED05414FF6C@apache.org%3e for details.
 * We're almost finished replacing Hibernate with OpenJPA, Hibernate is our
last license-related issue.

Activity related to project development:
 * We've created a much better site at http://incubator.apache.org/ode. We
still need to add more documentation but the principal is already there.
 * We've added a connector for JBI (ServiceMix) and another one with SCA
(Tuscany) is in progress.
 * Development is still very active, we've added more features and also
improved stability.

To complete before graduation:
 * Now that most IP issues have been resolved we need to release. This will
hopefully help us for the next point.
 * We need to attract more committers and encourage diversity.

So the plan for the next period is to finish the transition to OpenJPA and
build a release most probably in January.

25 Oct 2006

There's been a lot of activity and progress on Ode in the past 3
months. We all agreed on a codebase to start from (the former PXE) and
refactoring has been done to implement new integration interfaces
between the engine and the outside world. This allowed us to integrate
Axis2 and ServiceMix as communication layers (there've been
propositions for an XFire implementation as well) and to have a
distribution for both.

The development is active and we already have something fairly
complete and stable. We're now working on including more tests and
automatizing them as much as possible in the form of a BPEL test
gamut. Then tests could be contributed quite easily by
non-developers. We also have to change our persistence layer to
replace Hibernate with something more Apache license friendly. OpenJPA
has been mentioned several times. There's also an issue around BPEL4W
1.1 license and patents that we need to clear out by checking what is
required by each party and address it on legal-discuss.

Finally, we need to start attracting more users by advertising
ourselves. We've made a very simple site so we also have to create
more documentation and build a "real" site. A user mailing-list has
also been created. Once the legal and licensing issues are cleared, we
could also start thinking about a first incubator release.
