Description: Apache Polygene is a community based effort exploring Composite
Oriented Programming for domain centric application development.
Issues: The PMC Chair is mostly AWOL, due to change in personal life
circumstances. Additionally, myself and the last major contributor have found
ourselves working together on something completely different, and been
completely unable to put effort into the project. This is also the reason why
no report was produced last month. So, I have indicated to the community
(dev@) that unless someone speaks up, that I will initiate the process to put
Polygene into the Attic.
Activity: There was quite an effort in Q1 to push forward to the 3.1 release,
particularly to include "enterprise" SQL support. But for reason mentioned
above, this came to an abrupt halt in April. As we have been unable to attract
and retain any new blood into the project, I think it is time to close the
doors at ASF.

Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention at the moment.
Activity:
Activity is slow. A lot is due to individual contributors busy with
their own businesses. We have a remarkable high degree of entrepreneurs in our
mix, and we seem to be busy putting Polygene 3.0 to work. The planned 3.1
release has been postponed and probably not coming in the next quarter either,
for above mentioned reasons. In January we made one Polygene presentation at
Alibaba in Hangzhou.
Health report:
Community health continues to struggle, but as long as there is
interest and enough active PMC members, we will continue.

Activity: After the Release in July, we have been quite slow to regain the momentum, possibly due to using the release in outside activities. But, new features has been added and waiting for a new Release, hopefully in the next quarter. New logo has been designed (to tie into the new name, and cut the heritage with the original name), but not yet deployed to the website. Additionally, work is in-progress to upgrade the website to a more modern L&F. Hopefully deploying that after the holidays. Health report: Project is progressing in slow but steady pace. - The quarter was a flurry of activity leading up to the long overdue release 3.0.0, which involved a massive refactoring where all our own functional and streaming was replaced with those available in Java 8.
- Following the release, people have taken a well-deserved rest, but we are probably ready for one more release this year.
- The JDK 9 Outreach program is nothing new other than that the release are compatible with "legacy mode" and "jigsaw mode" has not yet been attended to.
Health report:
- This remains a small project, but it is active and we have enough active PMC members to continue. We have not been able to attract new blood, one feedback seen on blog post complained that it was too difficult to understand what it is all about. Perhaps re-working the Introduction and Tutorial sections will help.

Activity
This has been a quarter much more busy than normal. We tried to
make a release in April, but had to pull it due to missing a
couple of incompatibility changes desired, as well as one feature
not working as advertised.
A new attempt at a release is planned for July.
We want to change the logo, have a basic idea, but not gotten to
actually do it. Last outstanding issue regarding the name change.
Health report
Stanislav has been voted into the PMC. Before we came to Apache,
he was very active, and ended up creating a C# fork/clone and
been working on that since. During this quarter he has assisted
in some design decisions, by comparing what he has in the C#
version. Discussion is also on-going whether that C# version
should be brought to Polygene as well.
Other than that, community growth is not what we wished it to be.

## Issues:
Apache Zest has successfully transitioned its name to Apache Polygene, and all
interactions with infra team was smooth and went much better than expected. All
tasks related to the name change were captured in
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/POLYGENE-195 for future reference.
## Activity:
The name change spurred a lot of code activity, intersected with remaining
issues for the 3.0 release, which has been a bigger chunk of changes than we
were prepared for, hence the delays. But we will get there eventually. With one
of the most capable build systems at ASF now in place, we expect that future
releases will be frequent (by our standards).
We have also been participating in the JDK 9 Outreach program from Oracle,
where we have been asked to test against Early Releases. Our 2000 tests run
well in "legacy mode", but in "jigsaw mode" we are not compatible and have
not enabled the CI build.
## Health report:
The http://reporter.apache.org tool went a little bit bananas after the name
change, and we had some fairly high negative number of health in it. Quite
amusing in itself. Development activity was normal for our project, with a
small, typical slowdown over the holidays.
We are aware that we need to be better at capture the few interested parties
that shows up on occasions and convert them to contributors.

## Issues:
It has come to the PMC's attention that Eclipse Zest is a well-established
subproject, within EMF/GEF/GMF ecosystem at Eclipse Foundation, and that
there is some conceptual overlap (both deal with explicit application
models). They also started way back in time, and the Zest PMC think that
although we could stick to the name, we think we should express some goodwill
towards Eclipse and change name. The sooner the better, especially since we
have no published releases under the Apache Zest namespace.
The new name "Apache Polygene" has been chosen, after quite a lot of
discussion back and forth and some dead ends. We have just started the
"unusual" process of project name change, and we are trying to capture the
work needed in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ZEST-195, a fairly long
list of tasks (currently 18).
We don't need Board assistance on this issue.
## Activity:
Recruitment of new blood is continuing to be our weak spot. Re-positioning,
re-branding, better tutorials and lowering the bar to entry are items to be
worked on, inspired by other Apache projects, although I suspect too few
small projects check what other smaller ASF projects do right.
Zest is a small community, and this quarter was very typical, with good
progress towards the long overdue 3.0 release, which is all about making the
incompatible changes once and for all, both in namespaces as well as
leveraging Java 8 features in public APIs and discarding outdated ways for
that.
Zest is started participating in Oracle's outreach beta testing of Java 9 in
CI build, and we are currently reporting "yellow" but expect to go "green"
before 3.0 release.
## Health report:
Zest is small, but above the threshold for worry. Efforts are being worked on
to simplify adoption. Mailing list activity remains moderate and JIRA issues
are being both created and worked on. All active committers that are
willing, are on the PMC already.

The activity in the last quarter was relatively slow. The work on 3.0 came to
a halt at Christmas, mainly due to primary developers got caught up in $dayjob
issues/tasks. But community is still active and discussion are ongoing of next
steps, and we are optimistic of the future.

## Activity
Apache Zest made a presentation at ApacheCon EU 2015, on short notice by two
of its PMC members after the PMC Chair were unable to travel from China.
Otherwise, the quarter has been somewhat slow and quiet, with work mostly
focusing on 3.0 features, and re-examining the design of even the most core
features.
## Issues
There are no issues that requires the Board's attention, but as Chair of the
PMC, I would like to highlight that difficulty to attract new committers is
becoming a concern of the PMC for its long-term viability.

Apache Zest made its first release (Java Edition 2.1) last day in July and it
went remarkably well. Release Manager had no previous ASF release experience,
and that shows testimony to the high standards of the generic Release
Documentation (kudos!) After release, everyone went on a well-deserved
holiday, but activity is now climbing back up, with planning and
implementation for ver 3.0, which will require Java 8. All naming from Qi4j to
Zest has been completed.
## Health report:
Zest is a small but active community, and the size of community is not
expected to grow substantially in the near future. All previous Qi4j
contributors still active have been on-boarded, and we will take it from
there.

Board Raised Query In previous Board meeting, a discussion around the IP cleanliness was raised, and Sam requested that we should share our experience on this matter. First of all, we would like to know "how to share", and secondly, before the project came to ASF, we tried to stick to an Apache-compatible approach as much as possible. Therefor, we were not overly worried about importing the codebase, but we are slowing ensuring that all of the ~100 individual components have its attribution correctly marked. We are also trying to automate this process. Finally, we are still uncertain about a Neo4j extension, which may be dropped due to a unclear GPL dependency, and Neo Technology doesn't seem to want to clarify. Activity The second month of Zest has been dominated by bringing in the external codebase, start ensuring that NOTICE files are constructed correctly, migrating the website, and general clean up. Development on new features has begun. Community 4 committers have been added in this month, and one committer has been voted into the PMC. Apache Zest contains platforms and tools to explore the Composite Oriented
Programming paradigm.
Activity
3 weeks has passed since the inception of the project and being one of
very few TLPs not coming from the Incubator, some smaller stumbling blocks
were encountered by infra. But infra has been great, and we have gotten;
- Mailing lists dev, users, private and commits has been created
- Subversion repository for static HTML website has been created
- Git repositories has been created.
- Requests for Software Grants from all previous contributors have been
sent
- Jira is set up.
Community
The PMC had no objections to invite the previous contributors, and
invitations has been sent out, including requesting ICLAs (standard invite
letter). One previous contributor passed on the invitation (moved on to
other things)
Mailing list activity
Development discussions have started on dev@zest, and the Google groups
one is quickly deserted.
